Canadian DISer's Weight Loss Get In Shape Thread

Hey - just finished the workout and while I was doing that, the soup I made was simmering...the soup is SO good and I thought that I would share it with ya - it's a recipe like the Pasta E Fagioli from Olive Garden....(this recipe can easily be halved - the only problem is the measurements become kind of awkward to work with)

Ingredients:

2 tsp olive oil
1 lb. extra lean ground beef or ground chicken
1 small onion; chopped
1.5 cup carrots; diced
4 stalks celery; diced
24 oz. roma tomatoes; canned, diced
1 cup cooked red kidney beans (I just used a small can)
1 cup cooked white kidney beans (I just used a small can)
44 oz. low sodium low fat beef stock or chicken stock, depending on the meat you use
1.5 tsp oregano
1 tsp pepper
2 tsp parsley (fresh chopped)
5 drops tabasco
24 oz spaghetti sauce (there is a really good one from Healthy Choice that's fat free and low sodium)
4 oz. whole wheat pasta shell macaroni; or other pasta of choice

directions:
Prep: saute beef/chicken in oil in large pot until beef/chicken starts to brown. Add onions, carrots, celery, and tomatoes and simmer for about 10 minutes. drain and rinse beans and add to the pot. Also add beef/chicken stock, oregano, pepper, tabasco, spaghetti sauce, and noodles. Add chopped parsley. Simmer until celery and carrots are tender; about 45 minutes. Makes 9 qts.

I also added some garlic, because I add garlic to everything. This freezes really good. I am freezing some in some individual containers to take to work.

Don't be shy to share your favorite recipes....I am always looking for something new to try.

Hope you all had a good workout - have a great night!

One more recipe that I recently tried....it's a little different, but very very tasty.

Indian Peanut Stew:

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large white onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons grated fresh ginger root (If you don't want to use fresh, use 1.5 tbs ground ginger)
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes with juice
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 cup chunky natural peanut butter (I only used half of this and it was sufficient - make sure you don't use the peanut butter with sugar in it!!)

DIRECTIONS
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add onion, and cook until soft and golden, stirring frequently. Add garlic and ginger, and cook until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, and season with cayenne pepper. Increase heat to medium, and bring to a gentle simmer. Stir in peanut butter and heat through. The mixture will thicken. Serve over basmati rice.

I used ground chicken in this as well and it was very good. I read a review on this recipe on allrecipes.com, and many added chickpeas to it and loved it (I personally do not really like chickpeas, but if you like them, they may be good in it!)

So - I'm at work, and there is pizza and cake in the staff room....and you know what??? I said no!!!

Of course, the smell is fantastic, and everyone is telling me how awesome it is, but, I'm doing really good...

Ahh - the life of a dieter....

Good for you! I don't know if I could have been that strong, pizza is my weakness.

Awesome will power. There will ALWAYS be pizza and cake in our lives. We just have to decide when to eat it...and eat it consciously.

My sister's wedding is in a couple of weeks. I'm the matron on honour....although I prefer the term Best Woman....heeheehee. My plan is to try a bite or two of everything I want, but not fill my plate silly. This way I'll still get to taste everything without blowing my diet. I know the calories will be more than my daily diet, but maybe only by 200-300.

Someone once told me this....

NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS THIN FEELS.

Blessings, Sandra

Hey, that SparkPeople website is a great idea, thanks :goodvibes

However, it doesn't want to work for me this morning. Guess I'll just have to go by my own diet plan this morning. I actually love eating oatmeal for breakfast, and that's healthy! So maybe by lunch it'll be working ;)

There's this park by my house that I've been meaning to check out for a year, so I ended up doing a nearly two-hour walk (including an extremely "not made for humans" steep hill. Though it was pretty great when I got to the top!)

Besides that, I need to keep taking dance classes, now that I've graduated. I used to take it 4 times a week, but now that I'm a poor artist (:rotfl:), I'm cutting that down, but I'll still be going twice a week! The boyfriend and I take ballroom and latin also :) And we're thinking about pilates.

There's my little update. Everyone's doing great!

I'm pretty hungry today, but I've been good. One slice of toast with jam, tea, water for breakky. Lunch was a salad and low-fat cheese and veggie sandwich on WW bread, more water and a coffee. I'm making pasta and tomato sauce for my crew tonight, I'll sub the pasta with spaghetti squash. My brother is flying in tonight from Korea so I bought lots of comfort food for him; cookies & milk, Kraft Dinner, peanut butter. I'll be good! I promise! mmmmmmm.....bananas!

I've been good today too! For breakfast I had a cup of dry cereal with yogurt (I really can't do the milk thing), and I had my cup of tea (only I even measured... 1/8 tsp. sugar, instead of a whole one!). For lunch I had leftovers from dinner; some rice, half a boneless, skinless chicken breast, and half a corn on the cob.

Besides that, I've been drinking lots and lots of WATER. Probably one of the best things for you! We're supposed to be getting 8 glasses a day.

Another thing is I've been keeping a journal - counting all the calories I've been consuming each day.

I'm going to the movies tonight! The temptation will suck. But, shouldn't be a problem. I've been researching healthy snack recipes to take with us tonight!

On that note about the movies... I nearly died when I read this, you guys may want to see too:

Yikes.

Hi everyone! Just got back from my supposed-to-be-daily 45 minutes on the treadmill. I love that post-workout feeling! I wish you could bottle and sell it. Take a dab as inspiration to get your butt down to the gym!
I missed the Sunday weigh in, but I totally need to share my progress. I'm 17 lbs down now! :cool1: I now weigh less than than I did when I got married, and that just thrills me. I've still got a loooooong way to go, but for the first time I'm feeling like it's actually possible.
I want to loose 3 more before our trip in 2 weeks, and I think that's totally do-able. I know I'm going to put on a little with the free dining. But since it is free, I wont feel the need to 'get my money's worth'. It's going to be sooo nice to order whatever I want, leave desserts and bring back treats for family with the snack credits.
Only 13 days to go!:yay:

"Ready for some staggering stats? According to CalorieKing.com, a large tub of movie theater popcorn (20 cups) packs in 76 fat grams ... The equivalent of five full size Snickers bars ... or more than six McDonald's cheeseburgers.

As for counting calories, that same bucket of kernels holds about 1,100, shockingly close to most weight loss diet's caloric limit for the entire day (about 1,200 to 1,500)."

OMG :scared1: that is crazy! Taking the kids to a movie tomorrow night - will have to bring my own snacks - time for the extra large purse :rolleyes1

popcorn:: I guess it's only air popped from now on! I couldn't believe how many calories were in movie theatre popcorn:scared1: .

I made my big pot of soup and had that for supper (to make up for the donut and mac and cheese at lunch). I'm still doing okay for my total point count for the day though- gotta love that 0 point soup.

I'm in:banana: I've never done online support. Who knows maybe it will help. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my 2nd daughter almost 3 yrs ago. Post baby the Dr. told me I had a predisposition to develop diabetes if I didn't do something abt my weight. She put me on meds for it after she yelled at me and spoke to me like a child:confused: I am a grown woman who is fairly intelligent. I know what to do, just like all of you, I'm sure. It's alot easier saying it than doing it. It's a lifelong plan and not a DIET:scared1: Anyway, maybe some positive reinforcement will work. I'm looking forward to this journey we're undertaking:cool1: I'm 44 yrs old, 5'4" and on Sunday my wt was 219lbs. I would like to get to 150-160 lbs and go from there as to whether to lose more after that. I think we can all agree it's silly to want to get back to my high school weight, which was 135 lbs and I thought I was fat then. What was I thinking:sad2:

Purple peg the *&&%& with Doctors --I gained my weight because the professionals couldn't figure out what was wrong with me ,I actually got to be a model for a auditorium full of docs trying to guess what was wrong with me --I agreed to this to hope this never happened to anyone else--I was in severe Thyroid Storm -first Hyper and then Hypo,,,,,Doctors are an important part of being healthy but only you know yourself and deserve the right to express that.
Welcome to our group:hug:
My sister said to me today Mel-You know what word is in DIE T --I agree it is more a change in how we treat and respect our bodies.

Reese --I love your name --I think a chocolate peanut butter cup everytime I see it,lol, lol My son usually brings me home popcorn (works at the theatre) well no more ,lol.

Bellincanada --I'm finding I'm doing that kind of stuff --making baby steps to change the way I'm eating .I can eat cereal but the milk just doesn't agree with me.Hugs and hope the movie is great!!

Nothing Tastes as good as thin feels --ok --keep on repeating this.

The past two day were not so good for me. The one day I did clean my house from top to bottom. I am not the greatest house keeper so that was some work out. Today I am back on track....Having my yogurt and fruit for breakfast and heading towards the TV for my workout.:yay:

I hear ya on the housecleaning. Hate doing it. :headache:

Yesterday was kind of a weird day....I got up around 2 pm (night shift worker), did tons of errands, got back home around 4:30, ate breakfast which consisted of some soup I had made the other day, got ready to go out with some friends, ate a salmon caeser salad at a restaurant (literally, the healthiest thing they had!), and then I went to go ses JOSH GROBAN!! If you don't know who he is, truly, one of the most talented artists I have ever heard....and very entertaining. He came by our seats and I got to touch him!! Ok, so nothing too exciting, but the concert was fantastic. If he's coming to your town, try to go see him....you won't be disappointed.

Anyways, when I got home, I was tired, but I needed to stay up until about 3am because I am still working nights this week. I was hungry, so I ate some more soup....then, around 2 am, I became hungry again. I had every intention of working out, but I take wednesday off of any workouts, so I decided that I would switch days, since I was sore and tired anyways. I really wanted something crunchy (my late night snack weakness) - so instead of eating chips, I opted for some cereal instead, and it worked!! I didn't eat anything bad for me and the craving went away.

Anyways, I am off to go running....Have a great day everyone!

You got to see Josh Groban in concert!! I love him, he has such a wonderful voice.

Not only did I get to see him, I got to touch him!!! We were sitting on the floor, in the 10th row! Then, we rushed the stage when there was only about 3 songs left...we got the BEST pictures of him. Seriously, I've been to lots of concerts, but I think that was one of the best concerts I have ever been too....and the age groups ranged from 6-90. And he was SO funny! Anyways, good times...I recommend him to anyone!
