Can anyone tell me what Biscuits and Gravy at POR is? I'm just checking the menus, as i'm English, it sounds horrible! :rotfl:

:lmao:

Biscuits and Gravy is a breakfast dish that originated in the southeast US (who knows when). It is a flour biscuit smothered in pork sausage gravy and is quite delicious if you ask me! :thumbsup2

To be fair....Bangers and Mash doesn't sound all that great to us either. ;)

My wife considered sausage gravy and biscuits as one of the best breakfasts on the face of the Earth.

(Do keep in mind that "biscuit" means something different in the US than it means in the UK -- it is, in no way, a cookie.)

I live in North Carolina and biscuits and gravy is practically a religion. I , on the other hand, get slightly nauseas just thinking about it.

DH was quite happy to find it on the menu at French Quarter...and declared it delicious!

Every person for themselves I guess!

Unfortunately, I don't think the picture would convince anyone to try it! It smells and tastes much better than it looks. However, not being a Southerner nor a big fan of "biscuits", good sausage gravy and biscuits is hard to pass up. Again, w/ that said "bad sausage gravy" can be like glue, not appetizing.

If you try it and you should, I also recommend the French Quarter's. Make sure you eat it right hot and right way, it loses great appeal as it cools down, JIMO.

Definitely not like a cookie. It's a type of bread, fluffy and round. Like a roll. I love sausage gravy over them. Yum.

I asked that exact same question some time ago. I was told that the biscuit is a bit like scones. I'm sure it must taste better than it looks :rotfl:

Scones are sweet. Biscuits aren't. Biscuits are more like bread, but much better.

From wikipedia:

Biscuits and gravy is a popular breakfast dish in the southern parts of the United States. It consists of buttermilk American biscuits covered in thick "country" or "white" gravy made from the drippings of cooked pork sausage, white flour, milk, and often bits of real sausage, bacon, ground beef, or other meat. The gravy is often flavored with black pepper. In some parts of the South this is also called sawmill gravy. The dish is best eaten soon after it is prepared, and is always served piping hot.

AND

In American English, a "biscuit" is a small form of bread made with baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent rather than yeast. (Biscuits, soda breads, and corn bread, among others, are sometimes referred to collectively as "quick breads" to indicate that they do not need time to rise before baking.)

Biscuits are extremely soft on the inside and similar to scones or more closely to the bannock from the Shetland Isles.

I love biscuits and gravy! Too bad I didn't know French Quarter had them on the menu! I now know for next time.

I also agree that Bangers & Mash (as well as Blood Sausage) doesn't sound appetizing to me. However I am in love with English Fish & Chips!

If you've never experienced a big plate of biscuits and gravy, you haven't lived.

I like to mix mine with bacon, eggs, and hash browns as well.

Preach on! Too bad everyone can't live in the South. I'm gettin' hungry.

BTW, those pictures look terrible. I don't think I would eat it based on looks.

I agree that it tastes better than it looks. It really is delicious and not one little bit healthy for you.;) If you think sausage in(not sweet) cream sauce on very tender, flaky breadstuff sounds good, you'll love it.:earsboy:

What next??? You've probably never heard of Paula Deen either . . .

Love our southern food....yeah, biscuits and sausage gravy, grits, sweet potato pie, fried catfish....

:yay:

I love biscuits and gravy - but I wouldn't want the one's at the food courts in Disney to be the first ones I tried. If you are going off property at all try Cracker Barrel.

Being an Ohio born and bred.I love when I can get real southern b & g.you cant get that many great plates of Biscuits and Gravy round these parts. They are great though....if anyone is ever around Columbus OH try a chain called Tee Jays...The Barnyard Buster is eggs, biscuits sausage and homefries all covered in the best gravy north of the mason dixon line. Makes cracker barrel's gravy taste like wall paste

:rotfl2: Gotta love Paula. I ate at her restaurant back in May. Wonderful.

I agree the pics do not look appetizing. The gravy looks watered down. Gravy must be made with milk. And the biscuits............... Not fluffy.

I am a southern girl and love biscuits and gravy. It is probably one of the most comforting foods I could eat. The biscuits are in no way like a cookie or a scone. :) If done correctly, they are light, fluffy and delicious. Split them down the middle and pour a healthy portion of delicious gravy over! MMMMMMmmmmmm.....

On special occasions my mom would (and still does) make chocolate gravy to go on top (tastes like warm, chocolate pudding!).

Try them! I bet you'll love them!
