Cass & Kira - Universal Orlando - First Mother-Daughter Trip August 2024

Aug 8th Part 2

As we were walking, we spotted the new Mega Movie Parade that just started last month. I am not usually one for a parade, especially when I'm in the hot sun but we couldn't cross to get to where we were going so we decided to just stay and watch it. It was actually quite cool, the floats from BTTF and JP were obviously my faves! ::yes::

JPG278.jpg

We had seen them working on the T-Rex float the other day and I didn't know what it was, just saw a million team members standing around and I thought it looked amazing it so I took a photo of it and one TM asked me not to take photos. Not sure what the big deal was? Maybe he was broken down? :confused3

JPG281.jpg

We were both hungry so we decided to split a piece of pizza at Louie's.

JPG282.jpg

It was good, not great but pretty decent for theme park pizza.

JPG283.jpg

Kira was asking for one last butter beer so off we went to Diagon Alley. On the way there, we spotted a familiar shape in the clouds. :earboy2:

He's looking down on us saying "Why are you at Universal????"

JPG284.jpg

Happy girl with her final $10 butter beer. :rolleyes2

JPG285.jpg

When we were ordering, she asked me if she could get some fries too. They changed up their fries at the Wizarding World locations, by the way. They used to be wedge potato fries, now they are more like what the Brits call chips, which is a huge improvement, I think. ::yes::

JPG286.jpg

While she was eating her fries, I went and got some dessert for us, our last butter beer ice creams. YUM!! 🤤

JPG287.jpg

Once we were done, we rode The Mummy and then we rode Rip Ride Rockit. Both were awesome!

I was actually still pretty hungry and really hot so we decided to hit up Today Cafe because it was close and had great AC. :smooth:

JPG288.jpg

JPG289.jpg

JPG290.jpg

JPG291.jpg

They make pretty good sandwiches here, I've had it a few times and it never disappoints. After we ordered, we sat over to the right, in a corner but as we sat there, we realized that the three or four tables around us were all one big party and they were talking loudly over to each other and the kids were running around. This was soooo not our jam, so we headed over to the other side of the restaurant, where the half-booths were, which was much quieter and a lot more peaceful. Shortly after we left, the big party had noticed that we had moved over and were very loud and vocal about us moving, saying some not-so-nice things about us. 😕

Before belittling strangers in a very public way, I wish people would think twice. We didn't do anything to them, we didn't ask them to be quiet, we didn't give them dirty looks, we simply realized that sitting there was outside of our comfort zone and we moved to a place that was little more chill and suited us better. You want to be loud and yell and have your kids run around a restaurant? Fine, you do you, but why make rude comments when someone just doesn't want to be around that chaos? :sad2:

We both are really affected by loud noises and voices, which is why we always seek a quiet corner when possible. While I enjoyed my sandwich, I really didn't enjoy the harassment from these people. :worried:

JPG338.jpg

Onto better things! Kira had wanted to do all three of the water rides over at IOA, so we walked over there once we were done.

JPG292.jpg

First up was Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls. Most people don't realize that Dudley is, in fact, a Canadian. 🇨🇦:groom:

The ride is great, I have always loved Ripsaw Falls but getting in and out of that ride vehicle is crazy hard, especially as I get older and fatter. :lmao:

She was making funny faces while I was taking my photos and videos. :rotfl:

JPG293.jpg

We both got fairly wet, which was the whole point. :woohoo:

JPG339.jpg

It's so pretty at night!

JPG294.jpg

JPG295.jpg

We made our way over to Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges to learn that it actually closes an hour before the rest of the park does.

Oh well, we have one ride left, The Jurassic River Adventure. We didn't get too too wet on it, despite us being in the second row. It was a very interesting ride. A boy, maybe 10 years old, riding alone in the front row turned around and struck up a conversation with us immediately and talked for the entire ride. :teeth: He was a super fan of the ride and told us all about it. :rotfl:

There was also a cute boy sitting next to Kira and so I struck up a conversation with him, since we were all chatting and we weren't going to be hearing any parts of this ride anyway. :rotfl2:

I love being her wing woman. :p

I forgot to mention that when we had gone back to Sapphire Falls pool that one evening, there was a cute boy that Kira was crushing on. It was very evident that he was crushing on her too but both of them were way too shy to talk to each other. I was trying to be her wing woman then too but when you are young and have a crush, especially when you are crippled with social anxiety, it's tough. :o

Even with my social anxiety, I have no problem talking to people if it benefits my daughter and once that awkward silence was broken, she ended up chatting with the cute boy in between the super-fan chatting. :p

JPG296.jpg

JPG297.jpg

With Popeye's closed and us pretty wet from the two rides, we headed out. As we were walking through Toon Lagoon, Kira was enjoying the different water features. This one, in particular, was hilarious, she had stuck her head over it and was surprised as water spouted up from the bottom and splashed her in the face. . I got it on video, so stay tuned for those vacation videos. :thumbsup2:rotfl:

JPG298.jpg

And thus ends our Universal park time for this trip.

I will be back next week for a symposium but I won't be back with either Rob or Kira until 2026 probably. :sad1:

JPG299.jpg

We had some time for a swim and a soak as our hot tub was working!

JPG300.jpg

Stay tuned for our last full day, spent with friends. :thumbsup2

Ugh - I hate to hear about those people harassing you in the restaurant. Weirdly, something kinda similar happened to dh and I once. We were at Epot, in the American Adventure restaurant, Liberty Inn (before it was Regal Eagle). Anyway, there was a large table behind us and we were just minding our business eating our food. I had a bunch (okay - a LOT) of napkins on our table, as I always do. One guy came over and helped himself to our napkins without even asking! Wait. What?! I didn't say anything (I was shocked) but I definitely gave him a nasty look. Then, they really went off, yelling at us, saying ugly things about us, and harassing us. It was actually very scary. I could tell they had a lot to drink but it was terrible. So, I know how you must have felt with your experience.

August 9th, Part 1

We spent our last full day in Orlando with our besties. I found out right before we left for this trip that there was a new Keke's, not too far from Disney, so we picked up Jen & Claire from All Star Sports and headed over there as they had never tried it before. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table as it was very busy.

JPG341.jpg

JPG342.jpg

JPG301.jpg

Kira tried something new....

JPG302.jpg

I had my usual...

JPG343.jpg

I'm not sure just how new this Keke's was but I had a strong feeling that it had just opened. You could tell that they were struggling to find their legs. It was a bit of a disaster with our food coming out in pieces, cold, undercooked, very slow service. I have been to four other locations in Orlando and it has always been nothing less than spectacular, so I was a bit bummed that when I tried to share that experience with friends, it didn't go so smoothly. Isn't that always the case? :(

They said it was good though and we still had a great time with great company. :thumbsup2

Since it was so hot and none of us were wanting to spend too much time outside, we decided to go see a movie at Disney Springs. We had all seen the new Deadpool movie when it came out but we all loved it enough to go see it again.

It had been about a million years since I saw a movie at Disney Springs. I think the last time was in 1999! :earseek:

It is always such a hoot to see a movie in the US. The sizes are so much bigger down here compared to Canada and they have more food offerings. Pickles???:crazy2::rotfl:

They had this grab & go area, which I can't say I love. I never eat when I go to the movies but if I did, I don't know that I would be happy to grab stuff that might have been sitting there for an hour or two, or maybe even longer. :scared:

The rest of the gang always eat during movies and so I waited while they grabbed their treats. popcorn::

JPG344.jpg

The entrance to our theatre was freaking amazing! The round part had the title and photos from our movie that appeared to go round in circles, it was so cool!

JPG303.jpg

JPG304.jpg

I hate taking selfies but I was the only one without their hands full. :lmao:I didn't have my reading glasses handy and couldn't tell if everyone was in the shot. Close enough!

JPG345.jpg

It was a nice theatre with comfy seats.

JPG305.jpg

We got comfy and enjoyed our second viewing of this very funny movie.

JPG306.jpg

When we got out, it was clear that it had just rained and it looked as if it might rain again soon.

JPG348.jpg

JPG349.jpg

I had to pop back in to the Welcome Center to change our old tickets again since we didn't go to Typhoon Lagoon after all. Jen stayed with me while Kira and Claire went to the D-Tech store to get Kira's air pod case customized. At least, that's what I thought was happening but she ended up just getting a regular case without customization but since it was done on the computer, she still had to wait for it to be done.

JPG307.jpg

Jen ended up joining them because they all wanted to get a Dole Whip afterwards. I would have liked one too but we were running out of time and I wanted to grab some cookies for Rob and Kira, to take home. Look at that sky! :cloud9:

JPG308.jpg

I totally lucked out because the rain had kept people away and there was almost no line at Gideon's! I've never seen the line so short, ever! :worship:

JPG309.jpg

Kira took a pic of her Dole Whip.

JPG337.jpg

I decided to finally try their cakes. I had been wanting to try them for so long but I never seem to come on a day where I like the flavours. They only have three per day and they cycle but today was Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake day and I was all in! They have a maximum amount of cookies you can buy per person, it's usually 6 plus one of the specialty ones.

I have a hard time eating their cookies, they are so sickly sweet to me that I can only have a bite or two. They are very good but I don't do well with chocolate sometimes but I absolutely LOVED the cake! I only had two bites of it that day, I had stuck it in the fridge overnight and had the rest the next day at home. :p

JPG310.jpg

When they all got back, I was just coming out of Gideon's and they had just entered the queue, which was much longer now. Kira said she wanted to stay with them and get more cookies. I told her that I already got seven of them and since she was leaving for University in a couple of weeks, seven was plenty! I cut them up into quarters and freeze them and they last a good two months or so. She ended up getting more though. :rolleyes2

Each cookie is like four regular cookies and they are very sweet!

Spoiler alert, she did not eat them. :rolleyes1

JPG351.jpg

I left them in line as I was really wanting to have my chicken sammie one last time! Just as I went around the corner, the skies opened up and it POURED!!! I ran under the trees to take shelter a bit, not for me but for my cookies and cake, which are all wrapped in cardboard and paper! :scared:

I stayed here for a bit, trying to protect the bag of sweets but it was getting very wet so I ran over to Art Smith's Homecomin outside seating area. There was no one there but staff so we hung out and waited until the rain lessened a bit. I was there a good ten minutes and it hadn't let up much so I wrapped the bag up as best as I could, tucked it under my arms and speed-walked over to Everglazed.

JPG352.jpg

YUMMMM!!! I am going back to Florida on Thursday for a work thing and all I keep thinking about is having this sandwich again! :lmao:🤤

I remove everything but the coleslaw cus I am picky. :rolleyes2 Soooooo good!

Kira and Claire had headed back to D-Tech to grab Kira's air pod case and Jen came to join me. She was smart and she stopped in at D-Style and asked for some plastic bags for our cookies. :thumbsup2

So glad she did that because my bag and cookie and cake boxes were falling apart and so were hers! I know everyone is trying to be more eco-friendly with these paper bags and boxes but sometimes a plastic bag saves the day.:teeth:

JPG311.jpg

We dropped Jen and Claire back to All Star Sports and said our good-byes. I would be seeing Jen very soon for our next adventure together but it will be some time before I see Claire and they see Kira.

On the way back to our hotel, I had to stop to fill us up with gas. We had a very early departure the next morning and I didn't want to struggle to find an open gas station at 5am. I took the Universal Blvd exit and then took a right instead of our usual left and then a right onto International Drive, figuring there should be plenty of choices there to fill up. There was not.

I ended up driving all the way down to Sand Lake Road to the Circle K, the only gas station around. I should have taken a left on International Drive, I would have found 4 of them in the next two blocks! Now I know.

Anyway funny story for you. Well, it wasn't funny at the time because I was a little crabby but I can laugh now. :p :rolleyes1

It was rush hour so it took us almost an hour just to get from All Star Sports to the gas station and I really hadn't wanted to go all the way back to Sand Lake Road and then get back onto the I-4 again but whatever. I wanted to get some lottos for my brother. He always watches my dogs when we go on trips and he likes to play Powerball and Mega Millions when he's in the US and I also wanted to grab a Diet Coke as two of our cans were defective and had leaked, so I pull up to the pump and then I go to pop the fuel door and I couldn't find the button. I looked everywhere. I had shut off the car, of course, so I was starting to overheat, I was getting a little crabby because of it and for the life of me, I couldn't find it. I had checked the key tag, it was a 2023, so it was new so there must be a button somewhere in this dang car! I get out, standing next to the driver's side door, with it open, sure that it must be down low, hidden. No luck. Finally, I get out, go to the fuel door and notice that it has a little bump on the outside of it. 🤨

By now, Kira is outside with me, trying to help and I just look at her and say "OH. MY. DOG." :rolleyes2

She is only 17 and doesn't understand why I am saying that and then I put my finger on that little bump and proceed to flip it open.

Kira was gob smacked! She didn't even know that that was an option. :upsidedow

Seriously?????

This is 2024, since when are they making fuel doors like this still?!!

For my younger readers, this is how all of the fuel doors used to be. There never used to be a button inside to pop it open. That is something that started in order to avoid someone stealing your gas! Even my 17-year-old vehicle has a fuel door button on the inside! I didn't even know they made new cars without one! 🤦‍♀️

So, feeling very dumb, I proceed to fill the car with gas now and then I go inside to grab some lottos and some Diet Coke only to find out that their lotto machine is down and if you can believe it, they didn't have a single Diet Coke! They had Pepsi products coming out of their ears but literally no Coke or Diet Coke at all!

I had no choice but to go back onto the I-4, so back I went, into the rush hour madness and finally back to our hotel. :o

On our way through the lobby, Kira spotted Relay one last time. :flower:

JPG312.jpg

We watched one last sunset from our amazing hotel room, as I packed all of our stuff up.

JPG313.jpg

I would have loved to enjoy one last swim in our glorious pool but my alarm was set for 4am and it was getting late, so off to bed we went.

Stay tuned for my final chapter, our journey home. :thumbsup2

Shortly after we left, the big party had noticed that we had moved over and were very loud and vocal about us moving, saying some not-so-nice things about us. 😕
I despise rudeness!! As you said, you didn't ask them to quiet down or anything. I don't understand why people are so ugly to others. :( Sorry that happened to you both!

I will be back next week for a symposium but I won't be back with either Rob or Kira until 2026 probably. :sad1:
Yay for you getting back so soon. I always hate when I know it'll be a long time until the next trip!!!

I always take a picture of this sign!!! :)

August 10th

We had an early flight so I was up at 4am this morning and I woke Kira up shortly thereafter. Headed to the airport by 4:45am, returned our rental car and then checked in for our flight.

48.5 pounds! :p

JPG314.jpg

Down by Delta's check-in, they had this cool display with facts about the history of aviation, Rob would have loved this!

JPG315.jpg

I always stop by to say hi to The Traveler. He's either coming or going to Toronto! (YYZ on his tags ;))

JPG316.jpg

We had a bit of time to kill so we walked through the Disney and Universal shops before heading towards the TSA Pre-Check line, which wasn't busy at all.

JPG317.jpg

The sun was waking up, it was quite pretty.

JPG318.jpg

We found our gate, got some water and then chilled until boarding time.

JPG319.jpg

They were using the new face recognition screens.

JPG320.jpg

We got settled in for the journey to Montréal. A little tired but so glad to be going home. :thumbsup2

JPG321.jpg

It was a pretty clear day as we landed in Montréal, I could spot Olympic Stadium. I was born here and remember going to Expo's games when I was younger.

JPG322.jpg

And if you have ever wondered why they call it Montréal, it literally means "Mount Royal" and here is the "mount" part.

JPG323.jpg

When connecting in Montréal, we always eat at Archibald's, they have a decent smoked meat and poutine here, plus there's a cute server named Détan that Kira likes.

JPG324.jpg

JPG325.jpg

JPG325a.jpg

I love seeing the flight boards while in Montréal, they have flights to places you can't get to from Calgary. ::yes::

JPG328.jpg

JPG329.jpg

And before long, we were on our final leg home, from Montréal to Calgary. :cool1:

JPG327.jpg

JPG330.jpg

JPG326.jpg

We didn't want any food since we had just eaten but the flight attendant was adamant about bringing us dessert. Who are we to deny her? :rotfl2:

JPG331.jpg

Back at our airport, Rob was eagerly awaiting our arrival. :lovestruc

CK.jpg

He never lets me take anything, so I always take photos. :p

JPG332.jpg

And that's a wrap, folks! :thumbsup2

Thanks for sticking around for what was probably my last trip report. :duck: :rolleyes1

With Kira in University in Nova Scotia, most of our travel budget will be going towards two or three trips a year there, getting her packed up at the end of her first year, then getting her settled back in again in September and then probably to see her on her birthday in November. She is hoping to get a job while she is back here in the Summer so we don't have any travel plans for 2025. That's not to say that something may come up, who knows, but I think I am done writing the trip reports. As much as I love writing them and reliving our trips, they are such a time-suck for me. :worried:

If we do go somewhere next year, I will probably just do the videos and who knows, maybe I will change up the way I do videos and do more of a vlog-style, despite hating my voice and the dumb things I say.:rotfl:

Thanks to everyone who liked and commented, I really appreciate it, more than you know! It makes me feel like the time I put into it is all worth it.

:thanks:

Maybe for the last time, "adios, amoebas!" :wave2:

Stay tuned for the vacation videos, probably after Christmas. ;)

Thanks for sticking around for what was probably my last trip report. :duck: :rolleyes1
After 25yrs on the DISboards, I am not sure how I am going to remember our trips if you don't write a trip report. I can always refer back to your signature to remind myself of when we went somewhere, especially since you use Santa hat gifs next to our Xmas cruise trips :rolleyes1

As your biggest fan, thanks for doing all the time suck reports and videos, I've (& I'm sure everyone else) loved reading them and for me, reliving our trips through your eyes. Have to find a way to archive them for Kira though!
Toujours!

Oh no! The end of a fantastic mother-daughter trip report. AND, the end of an era?!

I will miss your lovely family and your trip reports.
Thanks for all the reports that you have posted thru the years, I always had fun reading them and enjoying your adventures.
Please take care and post when you can. :worship:

Last trippie?!! Say it isn't so!!!! If it is though, I'm so glad we connected on social media, so I can still tag along if you do go adventuring! :)

Loved this mother-daughter report so much. Some of my most favorite and special memories were made on trips just me and my Mom. What wonderful memories you two will have from this time together! :lovestruc

I am very late to the party! I just binge read a bunch of your cruise trip reports as we just booked our first Disney cruise as a family (not until 2026 but I was excited!). Now I see it looks like you are maybe done with Trip Reports! All of the ones I have read have been entertaining and informative! Thanks for some good reads!

While I can totally comprehend that these reports are a time-suck, they are a fantastic journal of your experiences and memories! I sure hope you do continue, although I get why you're not at this time. I've read them ALL. I've rarely commented. I enjoy living vicariously through your trips. I feel like you're a person I'd be happy to be friends with! I'm glad Kira is experiencing all the university things! Congratulations on it all.

I just saw your post on FB (that you landed in Orlando) and on someones comment I saw that you just wrote what could be your last Trippie ever :( and I didn't even realize you had written this one! So this is my placeholder to say yes I've finally found it :rotfl2:and now I'm going to go back and start reading it :lovestruc

Anddddd I'm done reading :rotfl2: Sounds like a wonderful mom/Kira trip (with some bumps and rude people :scared:) and it's so wonderful you got to take this trip before she went off to Uni (and meeting up with friends was amazing!)

Hopefully you'll still check in here at the Dis from time to time, too:love:

I have loved reading all of your trip reports and hope this won't be the last!!! It definitely gets more difficult to plan trips around college/work etc. for sure. I'll be along to read when you do!

Thanks so much!

I will miss you so much. Your trip reports are always a total highlight and delight. I always cherished your travel with Kira as I do many mother/daughter (younger one) trips.
I treasure each and every trip.

Thank you for taking the abundance of time and effort. We loved them very much.

My very best wishes for you & your sweet family.

I just wanted to say that I love reading your reports. I haven't commented before, but wanted to let you know that the reports are great and will hopefully give you something to look back on, cherishing the memories. I also have lupus and it's nice to hear from someone in similar circumstances.
