August - September 2013 Room-only Discounts

Assuming this works for our travel dates, I am likely going to cancel our LM room at AofA (no discount) and move to one of the All Stars, it's just one night before our DVC rental starts, so saving about $30 is probably worth it (although I was excited about AofA). Luckily i have some time to obsessively research

I know that sometimes when a RO discount is offered, it says something like "even more savings when you book a package", i.e. get passes. What kind of savings are we talking about? A 20% RO discount doesn't look too great in my case (for a moderate resort). Does it look a lot better with a package discount, or is the savings negligible?

If it's the same as the current summer discount, it's just a small savings on the ticket prices - for our four tickets (3 adult, one child) the difference was $62.49. The real savings for us is on the room discount. We're staying club level at the Poly for 7 nights - a 30% discount saves us over $1,300.

A 20% RO discount for 8 nights (3 adults, 1 child) at CBR is a savings of only $342 for us. That's why I'm so sad about no FD in August. For park tickets, I think we are all considered adults. How many days are your passes? We are getting 6-day passes.

Yeah, unfortunately the room discount is a much better deal at the deluxes. The other thing we've done is rent DVC points - we got a two-bedroom at AKV - Kidani last year for a great price (just over $2,000 for 5 nights). Since we had a full kitchen there, we ate 2 meals a day at the resort, and saved some cash that way (plus I always get a little sick of eating out three meals a day). Since you're a family of 4 you could get a one-bedroom for a lot less. Something to think about...

Our tickets are 8-day base (no park hopper or water parks).

Well, you'd have to bow out of the AAA first, so it may be easier just to book a new one with your visa and cancel the AAA. you can't stack discounts.

Hey Joe, would that original reservation need to be canceled and then rebooked? I also booked through AAA for the end of August, and got 15% off rack rates for POR. The AAA agent said that if a new/better discount comes out, I would lose the AAA rate and that she would apply the greater discount to the reservation. Maybe all this is splitting hairs. I' m just thinking it would be easier to keep the confirmation numbers straight.

As a side note, I almost had a heart attack this afternoon when I realized that it is May 2nd and I forgot to check to see if the Visa offer came out this morning. Phew! I had better not make that mistake again! Lol

If you wanted to flip to a room only discount then you'd have to drop the one you booked with AAA since they act as a travel agency...unless as you said, they could take care of making the changes on their end.

I hope they were correct in telling me that. I usually book things myself, but got lured in for the AAA discount. I booked a room/tickets package in the hopes of getting FD tacked on later. No such luck on that one, as we all now know, but I will still hope for 20% discount instead of the 15%. By my calculations, it would only round out to about $76.00 more, but heck, that's money better lining my pocket that theirs!

Thanks for all your good advice on these boards!

In case it helps for future reservations, I was able to book a AAA discount directly with the resort. So no travel agent involved. I believe it was 15% off as well. :goodvibes

Yes, a $200 deposit.

Joe - could you clarify? You are speaking about a package discount, right?
Are there normally early DV releases for room only?
And room only isn't a $200 deposit...?

With this being a room only thread...I kind of had to pause and think that over...and wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing because I've never done a room only ressie.

With the Visa it's usually a $200 deposit when you call during the Visa early period before public release. Unless something has changed, it's no different for any other promotion.

But not all rooms are over $200 a night. How could a 1 night room only have a $200 deposit? Am I missing something?

If you were making a one night only ressie, it would likely be the cost of that night. You're right they're not going to charge you more. I don't think I've ever had anyone ask me that one before. I'm too used to dealing in the thousands of dollars. No worries though, they'll tell you what they need.

Gotcha!

right when you make a RO reservation the deposit amount is equal to one nights stay. If you're only staying one night then you're also conveniently paid in full at that point. The $200 deposit is for packages.

Ok, that's what I wanted to know. We need a room only for our first night before FD starts. thanks!

Please pardon me for jumping in here, I hope it's okay...but were you able to get the AAA discount online, or did you call? I just got a AAA quote and am having a hard time getting in touch with the agent, but I'd really rather just go through Disney if possible.
