Can we do away forever with the word 'This'. It's just so meaningless. Post your own opinion, but I cannot stand the use of the word 'this'.

Just look at it like shorthand for "I strongly agree".

Dh's mother used switches and fly swats on her 6 boys. Once she even used a piece of a garden hose and many times used a belt. NONE of them felt abused nor do any of them abuse their children. They couldn't have a closer, more loving family. Could she have handled it better? Maybe. But she had 7 kids, worked full time running a store and owned a farm--she didn't have time for time outs and such. And it worked.

When a child is punished by spanking its silly to say "did you mean to cause pain". Well, yeah. Why else would you spank? What other purpose does it serve?

My own kids were swatted when they were 4--would never have used a switch on a 4 year old-- and I am sure spanked a few times when they were older, especially the two boys. Switches and belts and such were not used by our choice; but I did use a ruler type thing a few times when they were much older than 4. But was that swat supposed to hurt at least for a moment? Yes, it was.

I don't have an issue with a child being spanked at all. I know that sometimes it is the best way to get through to a kid. And some of you can tell me different from now on and it won't change my mind. I have seen it first hand.

I do have an issue with the marks that were left on this child. I do think maybe this player needs some parenting classes and anger management if its deemed necessary. You have to understand that spanking a child like that may not come from anger but from thinking its the only way to punish this child which means he needs to learn how to parent in other ways (along with spanking if he feels that spanking is ok) I don't think he needs to be banned from the NFL or even necessarily suspended.

Edited to Add: Please stop putting all the players under one label. I am so tired of hearing "the NFL players are sooo violent". They don't all switch their kids or hit their wives or fight dogs. For many its more of a product of where and how they grew up than it is playing football. All players do not do these things.

This is consistently being used as as an excuse for what he did. As if he can't help himself because that's all he learned from his father. If he were to also get involved with money laundering related to cocaine, would his supporters be saying he didn't know better because that's what he saw his father do?

Actually, Fortune Cookie, not demanding, just asking. That's why I used the word 'Can". And I really don't care.

I just think that using the word 'this' is one of those internet things that is just stupid. My opinion.

I think it's really hard to judge abuse by looking at the past and how our grandmothers disciplined. Totally different thought process then.

Again, we can debate forever on what is effective discipline, but leaving bloody marks sounds horrible and would break my heart if I saw that on a four year old.

Abuse in my opinion.

And you are entitled to your opinion but I think the opinion of those who lived it is the most important and they do not feel they were abused. They were/are dearly loved by their mother and family was and is always most important to all of them.

Peterson will be playing Sunday, as of right now. Vikings reinstated him yesterday.

How many kids does he have and with how many mothers?

It's rumored to be 7, though he won't say (probably because he doesn't know the exact number), and no one seems to know how many mothers there are...

Last I'd heard was 4 kids/3 moms but that was when the son he'd just learned of was killed so there probably are more by now. Another example of his "successful" manhood, I suppose. :headache:

On that note, I heard some interesting stats on this yesterday. After controlling for age and ethnicity, NFL players are about half as likely as their peers to be involved in domestic violence or child abuse allegations. Some of that is probably money/fame bias but that isn't likely to explain all or even most of such a significant difference. So it certainly isn't all players. Not even most.

Will peterson's little 4 year old think he was abused or is his father telling him he loves him and that is why he has to beat him? And then he grows up thinking that is how you discipline a child.

It's abuse, even if the person doing the beating thinks it's love. And even if the person who gets the beating thinks it's love.

Okay, Fortune Cookie, that did make me laugh.

I do like dry humor. I don't like "This". Come on...you know a part of you agrees with me.

No its not. My mil is the farthest thing from abusive as there can be. Just because its not the way YOU were raised or YOU raise your children doesn't make it wrong.

Your opinion may be that its abuse but since they are all grown ups now, they can make that determination on their own. They were not abused. They are one of those families that say "we didn't have much, but we always had plenty of love and each other".

I didn't say he couldn't help himself. I said maybe its the only way he knows. We are not born knowing how to parent, its learned from the way we were parented.

I clearly said he should be court ordered to take parenting classes. He needs to learn other forms of discipline. I am not going to say he should never spank his child but I will say that there has to be other forms used.

But it is wrong to hit children with belts and pieces of garden hoses. It is not legal. It is considered abuse.

Where's the outrage over this?

Outrage over which one? That the Viking reinstated him? Or that he has multiple children with different women?

Yep, the Vikings are copping out by reinstating him. Their reasoning is pure BS.

As long as he's financially supporting and NOT ABUSING his kids, I'm not concerned about how many different women he knocked up. Or about how many women wanted to get knocked up by him. We know he's abusing at least two, and, yes, that's worthy of outrage.

That's a good start. Hopefully some other sponsors will follow, but I doubt many will.

This. ;)

It is not illegal to spank your child in this state. And yes you can use a switch or a belt. Schools can still use paddles too. No what she did was not illegal.

BTW, she never left the kind of marks that Adrian Peterson left. He should have never switched that child to that point. Again, he needs parenting classes.

Maybe the killer of his other child was also "disciplining". I guess in a state like Texas where teachers can hit kids, I find it surprising they would indict him for "discipline". Of course it is two different incidents but as a person who lost a son - why wouldn't you think that hitting a kid would not be a good/smart/right thing to do?

I'm against whipping and spankings. The courts will handle AP and then the NFL will have to act. I think the only thing good that will happen with these latest events is to bring attention to the problem of abuse (child and wife).

This map in the following article shows the states that allow schools to punish students by hitting them. Should this be allowed? Teachers/administration have to alert the police to abuse. Isn't this a form of abuse?

These Are The 19 States That Still Let Public Schools Hit Kids

In 19 states, it's legal for teachers or principals to punish public school students by hitting them repeatedly instead of just giving them detention.

Good! We need more sponsors to follow suit. Can't depend on Goodall to do the right thing.

And others taking a stand:
A Dallas bar is fed up with the NFL's string of domestic abuse incidents and won't televise any more pro football games until changes are made.

Jack Mac's Swill & Grill made the announcement on its Facebook page Monday night.

“Running a bar in Texas is not the easiest thing in the world, especially when it comes to football, so I hope you will all take the stand with me, as of today, we will no longer show ANY NFL games until the league changes it's domestic abuse policies,” the post states.

Yes it does.

The child was 4. He had lacerations ON HIS GROIN. That is never ever ok.

That's horrible and barbaric!! What a way to create a hostile learning environment.
