hi all,
Well where do i begin.A little background first. When you call 911 to report a fire it goes over and we get the run,so does the police. Now the police don't rush to fires but they show up usally around 5 minutes after us.The cops first job is to prevent crimes, rapes, robberys, shootings and so on.The police know we are going to the fire and so on.So here's where things could have gone bad real quick.Last week in brooklyn there was several calls of a report of a building fire.Maybe luck would have it my way that a police car was sitting on the block, heard the address and saw the flames and went to this call first. My fire house was first due to this job and we would of pulled up before anyone else. The cops ran in the building to see if anyone was trapped inside.Once inside the hall and unable to see cause of all the smoke, both cops exitied the building with several gun shot wounds to themselves. The physco hidding inside the non lighted, smoke filled hallway that started the fire had a gun and shot at the first uniform he saw. Both cops were shot several times.

This is where we pull up and find both cops lying outside the building shot and bleeding. Now this is where my mind starts thinking,if those 2 cops where not there first me and my crew would have been the first ones in.A veteran jimmy and me would have been the first 2 in the hallway.Who knows what would have happened? Both cops will live and thier bullet proof vest were said to save thier lives, since both where in the chest several times and in the arms.not one bullet went thru the vest.I DON"T HAVE A BULLET PROOF VEST.So if shot at the bullets might have hit us in the chest.Who knows if this guy was gunning for the police,or just would have shot the first uniform he saw.I am fine but if now we did'nt have enough stuff to be worried about getting us killed here's something new to be concered about.YAY!!in my time with the FDNY out of 100% i would say we beat the police to 90% of every call. It's very rare to pull up and find police cars on the scene first.I guess luck or fate would have it this way on this one run. What happened to the good old days when people came to the fire house with cookies or cakes for us instead of trying to shoot us dead.Only 11 more years till i retire, hopefully i can make it without getting killed by a gun shot wound.Like i said i am fine i am just amazed how fate sometimes works. In brooklyn it is very rare for the police to beat us to calls and this one time and looked at what went down.Hopefully this is not a cool new trend to burn your house down and shoot the people trying to save your tush.Have a great day all!!!

Wow, so scary! I'm so very glad the cops are going to be alright, and especially that you and your buddy did not take those hits without a bulletproof vest on!

Thanks for all you do, MrFDNY, and hang in there. We all need you and your fellow firefighters.

Wow...pretty scary stuff. Glad everyone is okay.

Glad to hear everyone will be ok. What happened to the miscreant in the building?

Anne

I'm glad you are alright. This is so scary. I think it is a sad comment on our world when fire and police personnel must fear being attacked when responding to a fire or accident. Stay safe. :grouphug:

OMG that is horrible. I am so glad you and the two officers that were shot were ok. What is with these whack jobs?

Take care.

I found the story.

Bulletproof vests saved the lives of two NYPD officers after they were shot early Monday morning while responding to a call at a boarding house in Brooklyn.

Officers John Antonacci and Hector Ramirez were immediately taken to Kings County Hospital with gunshot wounds. Antonacci was shot in the shoulder, and Ramirez was hit just above the heart.

According to the NYPD – both are expected to be okay.

A third officer, Nicholas Horun, was bitten on the hand.

At a press conference this morning, Commissioner Kelly and Mayor Bloomberg said the officers were lucky to be alive.

The suspect, Jonathan Julian, is now in police custody. Neighbors describe Julian as emotionally disturbed.

Police say the officers were responding to a 911 call around 3 o'clock Monday morning for a fire inside a boarding house at 834 Halsey Street between Howard and Ralph Avenues. Residents say the suspect lit a fire in the communal kitchen on the third floor, claiming he was "burning the devil."

The officers forced their way into the room, and the man fired 2 rounds at the officers.

That is just unbelievable! :( I'm glad that things happened like they did & the officers will be ok. You shouldn't have to second guess if you should be safe doing your job when you are already under enough stress.

Be sure to thank your Guardian Angel before you go to sleep tonight. ;)

Glad you and the others are ok. :grouphug:
