2011 Destashing Thread

I have been working in the garage since the weather has been much nicer here lately. I made a path to the back of the garage yesterday and hope to have a large chunk cleared out by our next trash day (one week).

I worked a lot on my photos last weekend and hope to wrap up this weekend. I had to remind myself that my organizational goal is the PHOTOS, not the scrapping stuff for now.

We've been steadily picking away at the harder items left over from the last round of destashing. We took out 2 garbage cans full of misc. stuff yesterday for trash day and then spent the afternoon/evening working on another bunch of boxes for Goodwill. I also cleaned out my school supply stockpile and sent all the items DD is now too old for into her 1st grade teacher, it's a win/win for both of us. She gets new supplies and I get space. We still have a pile of papers to shred, but we did manage to shred a large trash bag full last weekend. Someday, I'm buying myself a really nice shredder. :cloud9:

I was able to let go of some more books; it's funny, once I see that they're available on Kindle, it's easier to donate them. Buying those ereaders have made it much, much easier for DH and I to let our old books find new homes. We're only keeping the 'special' ones, not every book we ever read like before. We're now getting to the point of organizing everything properly. Paperwork is a headache, but someone here on the Dis recommended a filing system so I think we'll try that and hopefully it keeps everything at hand, yet organized and out of the way.

Oh, and I'm not sure if this counts as destashing per se, but we're replacing all of the light fixtures and ceiling fans so that they match. No more ugly 70's gold accents and wobbly fans, which makes the room feel cleaner and brighter.

I de-stashed the coat closet floor & laundry room floor tonight. I still need to do the shelves but had to get the stuff off the floor! There were 27 pairs of shoes in the coat closet, 1 of mine & the rest of my 3 kids. That is insane, even if several pairs were flip flops and some lost snow boots.

So now I have a bag of outgrown shoes in good condition & they all had to take their stuff upstairs. I thought I'd cleaned it out this past spring, but maybe not.

It looks much better and the laundry room is on its way. I want to vacuum behind the washer/dryer & get the shelves organized. I'm in the mood to work on something else this weekend but haven't decided what yet.

Glad I did not listen to DS and get rid of his legos. He pulled them out today while home sick & enjoyed building for at least 3 hours. I also rescued a few clothing items I hadn't worn in a long time but now think I'll wear at my new job.

How is everyone else doing?

Anyone else de-stashing this weekend? We are planning a family day tomorrow so getting all work done today.

DH got on board and finished vacuuming the laundry room after I organized the shelf. While he was doing that, I organized the upper shelves in the coat closet. DS outgrew 3 jackets/fleeces so those are now ready to send off. Also went through the school/craft cabinet in the kitchen & tossed a bunch of papers. There is now a new load of stuff to put away in the basement but at least it's out of the main level and closer to where it belongs. I also washed the front door & porch table. Now I need to re-cover the porch chairs because they are filthy. Ugh, one project leads to another!

I was planning to have a yard sale at the end of Sept with our neighborhood but DH will not be available that day. Debating if I want to go through the hassle now!

Is everyone off enjoying a nice summer day?

are 2 towels that were long over due to be retired and another that DH just HAD to have. :rolleyes1 One of those AB chairs went to a home where 2 people were super excited to get it FREE :wizard:

Have you done more destashing? :surfweb:popcorn::

We destashed when this thread started and it is now time again. We have the youngest children of the family so lots of items come our way-if we want them or not.

This week DD and I retook her bedroom it looks great and we added a cork board to the wall. I told her it was her extreme room makeover. That day I did the bathrooms too. And I moved all their books from their rooms to the basement book shelves. We did collect 2 laundry baskets of books to gift to younger children.

Today it was DS room turn -his took much longer. Only got 1/2 bag of trashy items to get rid of. 1/2 bags of too small clothes. Moved a lot of games to the basement for him. While at times he worked though sorting items, I cleaned out the coat/shoes closet and the laundry room and two drawers under the entertainment center and the pantry.

Then later we only started the basement, filled the trunk of the car with toys, puzzles, books and gave it to a neighbor who has daycare. Our plan at least 2 hours a day in the basement for the next 3 days. The basement is their primary play and leave everything out area. (Such a fun vacation for me:rolleyes1).

yeadisney, wow, great job. No not the best vacation but it should make your life a little easier when you go back to work!

DH and I had a very busy day! We got rid of a truck load of this and that, a box spring, mattress, entertainment center and a desk.
Tired but feeling pretty good.
What have you destashed in the last couple of weeks?

Nice work 4Ears! Glad to see this thread again!

I took 3 big Kohl's bags of clothes and 2 small bags of books to Goodwill on Sunday. Part of it came from DS's room so his is looking pretty good now. DD11 is next, hopefully this weekend. Once it starts cooling off, I want to tackle the garage again. I did recycle a huge box that was a dumping place and made a little space. We need to make a run to the paint & glass recycling centers soon.

Also destashed a varity of VHS and DVD's along with a VHS/DVD player. A single Mom took some of the movies and the player for her daughter. A grandmother took a couple of the other movies for her grandson. LOVE that they went to homes that are excited to have them.

In the spring I am going to retire and move up north with my daughter and her family. I will be taking no furniture with me just boxes. I;m going up at Christmas for a visit and taking a load in my car. My goal is to limit my boxes to the amount that will fit in my car. Using bankers boxes, the smaller ones. Easy to carry and hopefully with all the same size will fit nicely in my car.

Great tips here.. Thankss

I had cleaned out my kids' rooms and pretty much moved the stuff to my room to get rid of later. Later finally came! I got rid of a bunch of preschool toys yesterday, I sold them as a lot on craigslit.

I still have some odds and ends to get rid of, my DH is out of town for another week and my goal is to have all of that junk out of my room before he gets home. I'm going to try craigslist for some of it, but if it doesn't sell in a short time I'll just give it away to get rid of it.

I am also trying really hard to get rid of a CRT monitor that my MIL gave us (don't know why, we didn't need it!). I tried to give it back to her, but haven't been successful with that either  so I don't know, they're hard to dispose of safely.

Were you able to finish getting rid of the odds & ends? Sometimes the HS or Scout troops around here have electronic recyling days & will take items for $5 each.

I took another pile of stuff to Goodwill tonight. Garbage bag of clothes & 1/2 a backseat with misc. stuff that I saved for a yard sale then decided I didn't want to deal with it. Nothing was high enough value to get much anyway so I think we'll be more happy to just have it gone.

So far the kids are keeping their rooms clean & the coat closet is still organized. I need to work on the basement and the garage is getting there. Im closer to the back than we were earlier this year! My goal is to finish it by the end of Oct. MIL/FIL and more family are actually coming to our house for Thanksgiving for the first time. I really want the place to be in great shape by then.

Is anyone else gearing up for the next hibernation? I'm hoping for a more organized, peaceful space to hole up in this winter.

In the past week or so we went through paper that had once again piled up. DH went through his military paperwork and we shredded 4 bags of stuff. (He has not served since Shield/Storm)

LOL, yes we are gearing up for our next hibernation  DH has been busy with doing fall stuff.pirate: And yes we will have a much less clutter house than last hibernation :woohoo:

I've been working some more here, too. I got DH to go through his dresser, we filled a big garbage bag full of shirts for Goodwill, plus another small pile of them for DS14. I also decluttered an old desk that I was using in my kitchen for a microwave stand, I moved things around and it really opened up my kitchen, the stand went for free on CL. Oh, and DMIL had given me 4 sets of roman shades that I told her I didn't want or need (thoughtful, huh?) so I listed those on CL and they sold for $30  I'm so glad to have those out of the house!

Next on my list is an old wooden swingset. I tried listing it for free on CL, but people kept saying they wanted it then not showing so I gave up. DH has taken it almost all the way down, all that's left is a fort so I need to get him to finish that or I may try CL again.

The CRT monitor is still in my garage, I still haven't found a place to take it. I think I may just have to pay to dispose of it which makes me mad since I told MIL I didn't want it in the first place.

I cleaned out outgrown seasonal children's clothing. I made about $200 from that. It was a ton of items. Made room for the next growth phase. :upsidedow

Getting ready to clean out old (but good) VHS tapes, toys, and yet more clothes.

I have been working away for the last few weeks. I took two bags of clothes that are too big up to a consignment shop. I am now going through the boxes of fall and winter clothes. I have a bag started to take up to the consignment shop once I finish. That is one of the good things about losing almost 50lbs since last fall.

I have also been working in our upstairs area. it is one big room that was my playroom/my mom's sewing room when I was younger. I have three boxes to drop off at goodwill plus six bags of trash to take to the curb this week.

I got Dh to finish taking down the old swingset today, he had to saw most of it apart. I threw away the smaller pieces, I think next weekend his project will be to take the big pieces to the dump. I'm a little sad to see the swingset go, but it really opened up our backyard, makes it look cleaner.

I know how you feel. We took the trampoline down a few weeks ago. The kids were done with it but it was sad to remember all the fun they had on it. I like the view from the kitchen window now. Plus once we re-grow the grass, the dogs won't track in so much mud.
