Would it bother you to have grocery label soda at a party?

I grew up on Shasta Cola - it was ALWAYS a treat when it went to 6 for a $1 because I got to pick about $10.00 worth.

I agree with a PP that stated that store brand "cola" sometimes can taste flat dependnig on the brand - it just depends on what you are used ot drinking.

if you are doing it for a big party I would just do a big jug of tea and a big jug of water. If it is hot that is what most people will want

We use plenty of store brand products at home, but not soft drinks. He's a soda snob.

But yeah, you'd better get rid of the incriminating evidence if you invite him. He might even smirk at French's ketchup.
Not a problem - I will of course be decanting the ketchup out into our finest crystal when you and Mr. Red come to dinner. You like fruitcake for dessert, right? Hopefully TipsyTraveler and her SO will come too and we'll make it a party! Tipsy can bring the shrimp ( ;) as a guest of course, not as an appetizer)! :wave2:

I rib my Canadian friends for living in a nation that puts Mayo on fries, they assure me that's a myth and the majority use ketchup. Thought you were going to give me extra ammo. ;)
REAL Canadians eat 'em with cheese curds and gravy. We actually only use ketchup on our Kraft Dinner.

I thought you guys just put maple syrup on everything. :confused3
upload_2016-6-12_13-11-37.jpegYes, whenever possible and R & D teams nation-wide are working feverishly to come up with new ways to do so. Can't wait until they "work the kinks" out of maple ketchup!

!

I'd definitely expect fruitcake. Isn't that the national dessert of Canada?

I'll be sure to bring some unsolicited side dish that clashes with your menu and insist that you serve it. ;)

 Don't you dare - the last thing we need is some stupid noodle salad to wreck everything. And you know perfectly well I don't have any Tupperware to pack up the left-overs. But OTOH, if you want to go ahead and invite some extra people you just met - no problem! (Except not if it's Ellen Degeneres because we hate her now.)

P.S. - KinderSurpises are actually the national dessert of Canada (in case it ever comes up as a question on Jepardy).

So buy both Coke and Pepsi products for your guests; it doesn't have to be one or the other.

No preference between Coke and Pepsi for me, and yes, I can tell the difference. They're both satisfactory. I wait until one or the other is on sale at a great price and then stock up. For Memorial Day weekend, supermarkets had deals on both, so I bought some of each.

Personally I confine my at-home soda consumption to Coke Zero Cherry, Cherry Diet Pepsi, or Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry. Dr. Pepper is distributed by Coke in this area.

This is what I do. We have a definite preference for Pepsi products, but I realize not everyone does. I always provide Coke & Diet Coke also, then let someone take what's left home with them. When I go to a family party, I always take my own drinks in case they only have Diet Pepsi or unsweet tea. At any other parties, I'll drink what they have, but usually leave thirsty. I would never say anything to them about it though.

OP, I agree with those who recommend water, tea & lemonade, if you're trying to save money. If you're going this route, please offer unsweet tea with a non-sugar sweetener (my favorite is Stevia, but I'll use any of them when desperate). We've been having to go to a lot of weddings in NC in recent years. None of them were offering any non-sugar/corn syrup options other than water. One wedding had every type of soda you can imagine in cans, plus tea & lemonade. None of it was diet or unsweetened. People should realize not everyone likes sweetened drinks. To me, it's crazy to have so many choices available, then leave your guest who don't drink pre-sweetened drinks with nothing but water to drink.

Ah, my mistake. I guess fruitcake is de rigueur only at Canadian wedding receptions. :)

:lmao:Them's practically fightin' words here in Canada. We're a French's family thankyouverymuch. :snooty:

I've always liked being a back-azzwards kind of guy.

Ketchup is fine for burgers and dogs. But hosts, if you are serving fries, I prefer mayo with my fries. Preferably Hellmans (or Best Foods in the west) and never that fake Miracle Whip stuff :snooty::snooty::snooty:

Ketchup on hot dogs????? :scared1: I won't serve hot dogs at my BBQs because I wouldn't be able to tolerate people putting ketchup on them.

Miracle Whip on hot dogs, however, is perfectly acceptable. :duck:

Absolutely NO!!!! to store brand colas. :faint:

The other flavors are OK. Maybe not ginger ale. Whenever I'm at father-in-laws, I'm usually forced to drink warm, flat, Shop-Rite brand diet ginger ale.

I like seeing the various knockoff brands in different places.

I would be forced to log on the the DIS and write a scathing report of your party where everyone would agree with how uncouth your party was with offering lessor-than soft drinks. We'd have a 16 page extravaganzas at your expense. I'd never complain personally, but I'd be silently looking forward to the thread I would create discussing all of the negatives associated with your so called "party" and everyone would agree with me unified in our disgust.

Dang, that almost hurt to type out...

But milk is completely different from soda, ketchup, peanut butter, etc. A manufacturer can't add something to milk or change the fat ratio and keep the labeling the same.

A manufacturer can add more/different flavoring, sugar, carbonation to a soda to package one as a store brand and another as a national brand.

One more thing, I hate the snob reference. Because I don't like something and would politely decline it if offered to me doesn't make me a snob.

I used milk as an example, they do a wide range of products for different places. It is a HUGE national food warehouse chain. So products are packaged in many areas dairy, bakery, meat, ice cream & general grocery

If you are that picky bring a cooler with your own beverage & food cause you never know what brand hot dogs, chicken or burgers they might use. Heaven forbid your taste buds should be offended by perceived inferior products.

Geez, what bee got in your bonnet.

The point I was trying to make is sometimes there isn't any/much difference in taste between a national brand a a store brand and sometimes there is.

Also, there's no way a manufacturer is using the exact same recipe for a national brand and a store brand.

No bee, could care less but I know how they work. My DSO has worked in product for 20 years. If they retooled for difference it would cost thousands. Sorry but it is a fact.

I could careless on brands, we use what he brings home.

I would agree that with many products there isn't a difference. We buy the generic version of many products. OTOH, I don't think perception has anything to do with it. If that was always the case, people who wouldn't buy store brands in some products wouldn't buy them in any products.

Please don't serve KinderSurprises at your dinner party. We Americans are too irresponsible to eat them without choking to death, so we're not allowed to have them.
