Wk of Mar 16 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hello, WISH team!!!!    So sorry that I have been MIA and I feel really bad for making some of you worry (thanks for the e-mails Kristi and Carrie!), you guys are the best! Everything is going great with the baby, I'm getting HUGE, well at least I feel like I am, although I've been told by 2 different people today that I'm just now starting to show. Tomorrow morning is my sonogram, I am so excited to get to actually see the baby and find out what it is--hopefully, unless it's a rotten brat like me :upsidedow. Then we're heading over to Babies 'R Us to start registering , I am so excited for that too. :)

So, why haven't I posted in forever? Yeah, I haven't done anything remotely athletic in weeks (sorry Bunnies!!) and I didn't really think you guys wanted to read about me lying on the couch eating Easter candy. :) The weather here has been INSANE--2 weeks ago we got 12-14 inches of snow and then from Monday night until last night we got 5 inches of rain. Now we are dealing with flooding. Because of all that I haven't been outside in a long time and I just can't face the TM and since all my running clothes are too tight, I can't face going to the gym either. But today is the first day of spring :flower:, so hopefully the weather will calm down and start cooperating. Stephen is doing good too, getting runs and bikes and swims in, he's just been crazy busy at work lately. Heck, I hardly ever see him. :)

I've tried to skim through the pages this week, but I am really behind, so I'll just say congrats with those keeping up with training and a big congrats for those who are covering new distances and conquering new challenges. I am really jealous that I'll never again have a new distance to cover, unless I train for an ultra-marathon and trust me, that isn't going to happen!

Cecilia--So sorry to hear about your dad.

I better get back to work, I took tomorrow off so I'm trying to get my desk cleared off before I leave at 5:00. I'll do better about keeping up with everyone and I'll definitely post tomorrow to let you whether I'm pink or blue. :)

Krista

Krista - thanks for letting us know everything is ok! And good luck tomorrow.

Hello Everyone

We got back late Monday night, but between fatigue and chores, I've been away. To Vic and WWDave, "no excuse sir."

Cecilia

I am very sorry about your Dad's health. I wish him and you the best in the coming months.

Amy

Sorry about that too. Sometimes life stinks. Thankfully, sometimes it is truly wonderful as well.

Krista

Good for you, Steve, and #3. Good luck with the sonogram. I look forward to hearing the results.

Bill

I'm sure you all are relieved at Timmy's improvement. Best wishes in maintaining that favorable state of nature.

To everyone who is making progress, congratulations. Minnie is 7+ weeks away. I know it will be hot and humid on race day, which seems too weird given what we're facing at home right now.

We 3 had great fun on our London trip. I won't bore you with many details, just that I always enjoy visiting London. I think I could live there very comfortably IFF I earned enough to actually live comfortably. We looked in the window of a real estate office and saw a nice 3 bedroom flat renting for 700 pounds a week = $1400 a week = $5600 a month :scared1: . The cost of living in the Boston area is high, but everytime I return from London my first thought is, "you know, things are actually pretty cheap here  ."

I do have one good photo of the 3 of us for the gang. This was taken on Sunday at Craven Cottage, at the Fulham - Everton match. It was a classic cold, wet, windy, raw English footbal day, and in spite of the weather we enjoyed ourselves completely.

DSCN0962.jpg

We were surrounded by fellow Americans, similarly in London to see a match. The funniest part is they have bookmakers INSIDE the stadium so you can place a wager on the contest. Martha and I couldn't resist, so we each put 5 pounds down on an American to score the first goal. In the 67th minute Fulham is attacking and a cross is headed in. I am pretty sure my man, Brian McBride got the goal, and when he turns I see the number 20 on his back, and yes indeed, I have a winner at 8:1.

After the match ends I run to the Ladbrokes kiosk and turn in my ticket, receiving 40 pounds, plus my original 5 pounds in return  :yay: :cheer2: :woohoo: . We celebrate with dinner in Nottinghill, and spend 80 pounds on dinner, so somehow I came out behind on the whole thing. My true athletic passion is soccer, so this was a day I'll never forget. Attending the match with my 2 ladies, and all that took place that cold day.

Running? Oh yes, I've done 2 workouts since returning. Saturday is a planned speedwork day, and weather permitting I'll be on the track, doing mile repeats around 8:30. I'll complain about the cold, but I'd love to bring that same cold to Orlando between 6:15 and 7:35 on Sunday, May 4.

Best

Craig

I'm so sorry Cecilia!
I will be thinking about your family.

Glad you signed up for the ING Scott! :thumbsup2
(Although, I thought you were already signed up! :rotfl2: )

Well, I've gotten some flu bug complete with chest action and fever. ING is like nine days away now. Today was the first time I've skipped a run on this program.
I feel pretty pathetic right now.

Hi Guys...

Shan...OH NO....I'm so sorry to hear you're sick! :sad2: You'll be totally fine for the race though. Just allow yourself the time to heal and rest....you've put the time in...your body is ready to run...just show up to that start line as healthy as you can!

Betsy...How is your hip feeling? Sending you some PD that you're healing up! I've had a lot of issues with my hips and hip flexors...so I literally feel your pain!

Craig...WoW...great picture! :thumbsup2 Gosh..I do miss London myself. My relatives have been coming over here the past few years instead of vice-versa as the exchange rate is so great for them! Great job on the jet-lag training...very impressive....it usually kicks my butt and I find it hard to get the runs in post travel.

Bill...Great news about Timmy's ears! Sounds like he's up and running already! Look out!!!! ;)

Krista...   I was just mentioning to scott that we hadn't heard from you in a while and hoped you were doing ok. THANK YOU for posting the update...HOW EXCITING for the ultrasound! :goodvibes

Cecilia...hope you're holding up ok. I know you had a tough run (saw in your team thread). Running with that emotional weight on your shoulders is really difficult...I'm just impressed that you managed to get your run in with all you have on your mind.

Carrie...good job getting the steps in!

Judy and Jen...WTG on some good runs.

Maura: Chi Running...the principles that I've found most helpful include the relaxation of the legs (difficult to master but I think I'm getting it) and for me it all makes a ton of sense since I pretty much teach these principles in my Pilates class as we focus on the core. I just love seeing it applied to running. I also think the arm swing and slight forward lean are so helpful to me...it's just the overall thought process that I really love!

Not much to report here. Thanks for the kind thoughts and wishes yesterday. The memorial service was beautiful...a fitting tribute for a beautiful woman. On the training front I'm going to possibly hit a spin class later and I teach Pilates this evening. I'm still feeling the effects of a very heavy training and teaching day on Tuesday! So I don't want to go too crazy today!

A little honeibee told me you all were here. Mind if I join in?

The 1/2 marathon is my goal for this year. I walk, but have never run. Time to start. I'm hoping the weather here in Chicago co-operates soon so that I can get off the treadmill and get some real life experience.

Welcome! I am in the Chicago area too and also walk. I do a lot of my training on a TM. This is a great place for advice and support!

Welcome! Another Chicago suburbanite here and yes..please let the weather finally improve (she says as a winter storm warning has been posted.....)

I also walk and am doing the WDW 1/2 Jan 2009 plus the Minnie 15K in just 7 weeks! :scared1:

Welcome and this truly is a great place for advice and support.

Welcome Evil Genius! I hear you about getting off teh Treadmill!!!!

Aloha Jeffs I'm channeling the spirits of Vic & WWDave here, not to mention Larry the Cable Guy, but don't you mean you were able to Git-R-Done? :lmao: WTG on the 4 miler on tired legs. And I think it's so cool that your princess #1 might have a training "play date." It's comforting to think that, with all that we read about children's obesity & sedentary lives & video games/TV, there are active kids out there, events for them, and supportive adults. WISH parents rock! :cool1:

Bill: Yay for Timmy's checkup. I understand what you mean by weekend/holiday coping strategies. I often tell my ILs that my primary job in any gathering is to "Show up, sit down, and shut up!" Much less stressful...for me. :rolleyes1

Kristi: First, thanks for the NB link. Love my NB! (See below.) It sounds like your new furniture will give you plenty of XT activities!

Carrie: Good job listening to what your body was telling you. You were active without pushing your body into exhaustion--and that's a good thing.

Jen: Wow--you got out there in the great (or not-so-great) outdoors & did it! Congratulations!! I'm going to take your determination to run outside as a true sign that spring is coming! And I keep imagining you running in a Michelin Man costume, for some reason. :rotfl2: I hope getting out there was good for your running mojo, even if it was difficult. I'm sorry to hear that your work is piling up, btw.

Judy: Whoo hoo for your run & its aftereffects. You ARE strong! Now just go into your boss's office & tell them to lighten up the workload, there's DISing to be accomplished! :thumbsup2

Dave: I'll help you slap a weatherman around if I can find one. The ones in this area are hiding, I think. And I'm holding you to that prediction of awesome accomplishments, although with WISH, everything's possible!

Maura: I'm glad someone else understand the "my" machine thing. I'm not that picky as I'll get on any available machine if necessary, but there's this one TM that's a favorite: it can be programmed for up to 99 minutes at a time, it's away from the machines where giggly girls and manly men congregate to exchange pleasantries, and I know its quirks.

As for Chi Running, the single best thing? Wow. Hmmm. Doing the forward lean exercises, I think, has made me more aware of how I need to consciously engage my core. So I vote for that. (But the arm motions, the picking up my feet, the posture, relaxing the muscles...all good.)

Krista: Oooh, the sonogram approaches. It seems so soon to me (but maybe not for you). What exciting news. I can't wait to hear the results! And you can always tell me about eating Easter candy--I'll live vicariously through you. (Although my sweet tooth will probably have something to say about that.)

Craig: I so envy you getting to see Fulham - Everton, or any football really. (DOOD is a big fan, and I follow somewhat.) McBride was fantastic, and your winning your wager was an added bonus. Not a lot of hope for Fulham, IMO, but Hodgson deserves a break. How many matches left? In running news, it's good to hear you're back in the training groove. The Minnie awaits! :cheer2:

Shan: Take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest & hydration. It's not an ideal situation, but you have time before the event. You've done so well up to this point, and are in tape, and so I'm sure you'll be recovered soon & do well.

Amy: I'm glad that the memorial service was what she deserved and hope you found some peace in saying goodbye. Please continue to take care of yourself, in all ways.

Evil Genius: Welcome. We encourage all newcomers to join us for the secret initiation rites at the January events. :cool2: Panda Dave will clue you in...or not. Bwa-ha-ha. (C'mon, what did you expect with a name like Evil Genius? Cheerleader smilies? :cheer2:) More seriously, we also have a Walkers thread here on the DIS, if that's also of interest to you.

As for me: I posted this on the Lean Meaners thread, but it speaks to my entire day, so....

I got up this morning & went to the gym. I had to wait for about 5 minutes for a TM, but I got one. And while I thought about sitting on it & charging someone a fee if they wanted to use it right away--hey, I'm broke--I decided that it was in my better interest to do my run. It wasn't quite the magical run of Monday, but it was pretty good. Circuit training was meh, but I did it.

And here are my new babies, the NB 1223, a stability shoe:

shoes_iaec1041792.jpg

I will hug them, and love them, and name them George & Georgina. :cloud9:

We went to Elite Runners & Walkers, and I had a very good fitting experience. I was still running on the shoes that had given me all the blisters & black toenails during the Goofy, although I haven't experience the same degree of problems since then, probably because of the low mileage I'm been logging.

When I talked with the salesperson, his immediate reaction was that my shoes were too small, which would explain the black toenails. I said, "Yeah, I know that's what causes it." Then he examined my shoes and admitted I seemed to be wearing the right size--one size bigger. I didn't say anything, but I thought, "Yeah, I know." We spent some time talking about my blisters, my running history (or lack thereof) and my plans. And then my fitting became this puzzle for him to figure out.

My new NB shoes, like my old ones, are both size 8, btw, and the difference in fit is small but noticeable. They're narrower in the heel than my last pair, but with the wide toe box my tootsies appreciate. These babies feel pretty darn good, even though I'll only really know how they work after I take them out for a test drive. Still, I have high hopes!

Oh, and one last thing: That green you see? It's lime green, which I take as a sign. After all, I didn't choose the pair based on their color but based on their fit. No, these shoes chose ME.

Hi WISH Team!

Craig, great pic, glad you enjoyed and glad you are back with us.

Kristi, you should know your are WISH Team. Come post and tell us you are getting fat, eating bon bons and playing. I know you will love seeing your little one tomorrow. Post the pics please!

Deb, great on the new shoes. They will make you run faster and jump higher!

Evil Genius, glad you found us!

I am jealous of all of you who are able to play outside. I'm here all day and can't go out to walk b/c of weather. Oh I WISH I could be out there.

Today is a do-nothing day. I'm still doing every-other. I've decided that the core strength is all gone. I am able to walk, but not anything else. I just tried to do the slightest bit of dusting around here and found that to be more of an effort than any TM stuff I've been doing. I'll have to make sure I get that in order first out.

Deb,

Nice post to everyone, as usual.

I don't know how you keep up with everybody's coming and goings...it must be that you're so fast on your runs, you actually have time to read every single post, take notes, think of replies, then journal. LOL.

Princess #1 is enjoying her tri-training. No complaints so far, probably because she and Princess #2 end up swimming at the beach after all the training is done.

Love the new shoes. Hopefully these will cure your toenail problems. I always go with one size larger and wider, to accomodate my thick Thorlo socks.

WISHERS:

I hope you're all getting nicer weather, and recovering from illnesses or injuries.

I'm planning on a 6 miler, up through the hills this afternoon. Two of my training partners are questionable on going with me. So I may be solo.

I got myself a subscription to Marathon & Beyond magazine. Good reading if you haven't seen it yet.

Tomorrow, I'm going hiking at Makapuu lighthouse with the Queen, the Princesses, and friends from Kansas. Hopefully we'll catch the humpback whales offshore, since it's whale watching season here. Oh, by the way, we get Good Friday off as a state holiday here in Hawaii. Eat your hearts out, he he he. :rotfl2:

Hi Everyone...

Wasn't able to get out tonight, will try tomorrow but not sure about the weather, suppose to rain Friday and Saturday. Also suppose to have a Racewalking Lesson on Saturday for the first time, I hope it works out.

DEB: I love NB shoes!! Which number are those??

Evil Genius: Come join us on the Walker thread!! Walkers are Wonderful!!

Hope all have a great evening!!

Wow Debra!

I am totally impressed. To talk with a Yank who has a detailed base of knowledge of Fulham Football Club is a pleasure.

Yes, Brian McBride is such a class act. DD and I have seen him play many times in the states, for Columbus and the USMNT, and he impresses every time with his work rate, technical skill, and leadership qualities. The fact that an American is the captain of a premiership club says is all. Lesley found an interview with Clint Dempsey, talking about his transition to Fulham, and he pointed to McBride's guidance and influence making it easier for him to make the step up in quality along with the move overseas.

The soccer community in the USA is pretty small, and we take great pride in our successes. I was a part of the 2nd wave of soccer in the USA, a time when our national time was completely outclassed by nearly every footballing nation, including the minnows of CONCACAF. Now that our men dominate the region, it means the world to every member of the US soccer community.

Fulham has 8 matches left, and is 4 points away from safety. The odds aren't good, but in the next few weeks they play nearly all the teams who are also near relegation. If they get some wins they'll stay up, and if they don't then they deserve to go down. Given there are 4 Yanks on the roster, and they all played Sunday (Keller has taken the #1 keeper spot!), I'd sure like them to stay in the Premiership.

And I wish you were next to me wispering in my ear Sunday. I yelled at Hodgson to sub out that stupid Dane who stunk up their right wing all match. Unfortunately I butchered the coach's name, which probably reduces the impression that I knew what I was talking about.

And very cool shoes there. I believe the manufacturers use loud colors like that for their racing flats. Are you telling us something about your next event?

Lily

Of course you have no core strength. You haven't forgotten what the surgeon did to your torso, have you? I thought not. Just get better a little at a time. I'll see you in 51 days.

Judy

Finally, as ordered by you, I returned Martha safely. The truth is, of course, she got me back home without incident. The thing is, I really want a London Metropolitan Policeman's helmet. I don't want a cheapie plastic thing from a shop, heck no, I want the real thing. Every time we walked by a policeman Martha said, "there's your opportunity, but remember if you do it, I'll be able to show all my friends pictures of me bailing you out of jail." Gee, I thought vacation was all about letting go and being irresponsible. Thanks Martha.

Is Makapuu the lighthouse on the other side of Diamond Head? I'm not sure taking someone from Kansas there is a good idea. How are you going to get them on the plane home after showing them sights like that?

Best

Craig - Thought about you all weekend while DH was flipping from one EPL game to another. Just read your post to him, and I'd only gotten as far as telling him what bet you made before he told me who scored. I can only name the players on Man Utd, since for some reason those games seem to stay on in my house. I do love the fact that the Americans are doing so well over there - finally!

Krista - So glad you finally appeared. Can't wait to hear tomorrow!

Lily - You should be very happy with your progress so far. I think you're doing a terrific job of combining workouts and rest days so you don't overdo it but build back gradually. Glad to hear that the coyote is no longer a threat to anyone.

Debra - I LOVE the shoes. I was always a big NB fan, but once I started running seriously and getting fitted at running stores, they never seem to bring out the NB for me. I want the lime green ones!

Evil Genius - :welcome:

Cecilia - :grouphug: Sorry to hear about your dad.

Shan - Get lots of rest. Like Amy said, getting to the start line healthy is your #1 priority right now!

Jen - Hooray on running outside! I sympathize with the workload - we've made cutbacks too, and even though business is really slow, I'm working more hours than ever. I've had my running gear in the car all week but have stayed late every day instead of hitting the greenways.

Has anybody heard from GaJen?

After a great week of running last week, I've done nothing all week. I'm planning to go out with my group on Saturday - most of them are doing 10, but a couple may only do 6 so I may take the shorter route. Will just do whatever feels right at the time.

I did buy my first running skirt last week and wore it for the 5K on Saturday. I must admit, I didn't believe all the hype, but I am now a convert!

One last post before I sign off because I can't believe I forgot to mention it. They're NB 1223, a stability shoe.

Hello teammates. Sorry, didn't get a chance to post last night, but my run yesterday was okay. I managed 2 miles on the TM before twinges of pain returned. Before it became an issue I hopped over to the bike trainer, with no pain. Today was a xtraining workout on the elliptical and leg weight work. And, because my dsis took me kicking and screaming, I joined the Zumba class this afternoon. If any of ya'll have a Zumba class offered at your gym, give it a try. It was so much fun! And I'm so not a dancer; it did feel like I should've had a margarita in hand instead of doing squats though!

Hope everyone is well! Glad to see Craig and Martha back on this side of the pond!

Hello All! I am back from Atlanta! :wave2: Spring Break is almost over for us. :sad1: We had a great time, and actually got downtown safely. Cecilia, I read about your news of your dad while I was over there. So sorry to hear that. Sending prayers and PD :wizard: your way. BTW, I thought of you and Shan as I was driving out of town today. Not sure where y'all live, but I spread DIS Love:love: between 400 and 75, and all the way up 75. Hope it found ya'.

Evil Genius - :welcome: I remember you and your sweet DH (see my siggy ) from WPASADI. Glad to have you!

Craig,

Yep, Makapuu is between Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo, at the cliffs above Sea Life Park.

Fortunately, my friends from Kansas are annual visitors to Oahu, so they've been all over this island. They have a fondness for lighthouses, so since there are just two, the Diamond Head and the Makapuu, we decided to go for a nice walk and look for the humpback whales. They fly out on Friday afternoon, so it's our last chance to see them this time on their visit.

I'll be sure to post a photo of our hike, just to rub it in (I mean show you the beauty of our islands). LOL.
