Wk of Jan. 27th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

There are so many posts each day I'm having trouble keeping up!:) Being new to the Wish Team, I have a question for you that have been training longer. I regularly walk 4 miles in 1 hr and would like to kick it up a notch so I can do the Minnie 15K a little faster. I think each time I try to add running to my plan,in a walk/run workout, I must add on to fast because I end of going back to walking because my hip starts hurting. Does the Running for Mortals book have plans for all levels?
The Wish Team is great! I'm sure these threads will help keep me motivated through this next year. Off to work now.

I don't think I got a chance to say :welcome: I don't have an anwer to your question, but I'm sure SOMEONE on here will!!

Okay, WISH teammates. While I agree I am *inspired* to stay healthy, I spent 65 minutes on the treadmill tonight, and I hated every second of it. I had a stitch in my left side even though I remembered to use my inhaler and made a conscious effort to breathe into my belly. The only good part was that all the computation I did trying to figure out how much time I had left was probably good for my brain.

I walked for 3.5 miles. I'm glad it's over. And I came home and did 20 minutes of pilates.

I am so discouraged. I thought that week two would be easier than week one. :(

Okay, off to shower and eat dinner!

ms.mightyduck, I'm so happy for you that you pushed through a tough work out today. I myself hate the treadmill, but now that mine has torn up I really miss it. Here is hoping the next treadmill encounter is more to your liking. :wizard:

I've enjoyed all of my runs post-Marathon, but today I am having problems with my knee and my muscles hurt and are really tight. I'm not sure what's going on, but I don't want to skip a run tomorrow, but I may have to delay it.

...I just feel like I don't belong here today--not at all excited about working out (not even feeling proud that I did it)...

Kristi, that's so great that you were so excited to work out--you give me hope that I won't always hate it (and congrats on the tix score!).
No way will you EVER not belong here! We are here for all of us and need each other. Please don't worry about bad times. There are and will be many.

I know exactly how you feel, there was a time over the summer I didn't even post anymore, partly because my life got turned upside down but partly because I was not proud of the workouts or lack of at the time. But I look back now and realize I needed my WISH team more than ever then. Please know that no one here judges anyone on what they accomplish. I think that is why this team conitnues to grow at an astronomical rate.

No matter what level everyone is at everyone is so encouraging because at some level or another everyone here has had their share of BAD days. We are here for you!!!

Well said!

Thanks, all. I was really feeling like a phony hanging out here with such cool athletes and I am so not an athlete.

Angie, thanks again. I'll keep at it.

Kristi, thanks for the encouragement. I'll let you know if I ever have a fabulous day! But I am glad to hear that it could still happen for me....

Chris, sorry to hear you are having some muscle issues. I have to use the treadmill at this point because it is too cold for me to be outside. I hope you can get your run in tomorrow!

Lily, I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like this exercise stuff!

That is sooo funny you said that because as you were posting this I was on the BIO thread posting my story and one of the things I refer to over and over is that I have never been an athelete and never thought I would be. If you have a second read it, it is such a huge coincidence :lmao:

Good for you duckie! Perserverance (sp?), you've got it! :thumbsup2

I did W1D2 of the Couch to 5K today. I finished and thought, boy that was slow and harder than it was the other day. Then I caught myself and decided at least I did it right? Better to do it slowly than not do it at all? I swear I am quickly learning that there is such a mental aspect to all of this. You really can so easily (at least I can) bring yourself down.

You just unlocked the key to this whole training thing!! And why for someone like me it has changed my life. I used to be such a quitter, but because I pushed through stinker runs and have accomplished so much my whole attitude and outlook on all aspects of my life has changed.

Congratulations on your accomplishments, I am sure there will be many more to come.

Sharon...not sure about Running for Mortals, but MFM has a pretty good transition program. I trained for my first half using the walk/run the half plan.

Duckie...dude, you're with us...and you're an athlete now. Welcome to your first stonker (that's Helen-ish for bad walk/run ;) ). I have to :worship: anyone who can stand 65 minutes on the TM. I'm only good for about 30 before I start wanting to jump off the back.

Allyson...the mental aspect of training is hard! Great job pushing through!

Debra...maybe we need a WISH team book club :) . BTW, Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer for the mental aspects of training.

I have nothing training-wise to report tonight. So much for jumping on the XT bandwagon with this new training schedule :rolleyes1

Please stop by the RaceReady shirt thread if you're interested in getting a WISH team tech shirt. We're getting close to ordering and I need some opinions.

OK, TEAM, did you read that???!!! :lmao:

Duckie, (love the nickname) you are now one of our favorite people...:cloud9:

Seriously, though, the thing that makes this group so awesome is that we run the gamut from those doing 6 minute miles :faint: to those just starting out at maybe a 20 minute mile. Those training for ultras and tri's to those completing their first mile. EVERY accomplishment is celebrated and every stonker commiserated with (like that 50 cent word? ;) ). That's what this board is all about. To let you know that you do not have to do this alone. To be able to share what you are experiencing with a group that understands. :grouphug: To many, many of us the idea that we could be called athletes was a foreign concept. You made our day. :flower3:

Did someone mention my name?

Well last night I joined the new running club who all seem very nice - the guy who runs it has even run Disney back in 1997. 5k was pretty tough though - I haven't 'raced' it for about a year so I took off way too fast - thinking that perhaps being able to run 39.3 miles 2 weeks ago might carry me through a 9.50min mile for 5k - WRONG - felt great for 2km, but, by the halfway point, I was suffering. Took me 31.06 in the end. Tim ran too - he did 2km, and now is the proud owner of the course record (of course now he wants to know where his medal is)!.

They also told me about a race that sounds fun - it's a 20 miler and goes from an island just off Tasmania to the 'main land' - I'm assuming there's a bridge rather than my having to develop superpowers, but all the locals come out to watch, and they do this because they bet on you. You have a big dinner the night before when they check out your form, your handicap time and your shape - he said, some of them even do fat pinch tests - then they wager on your chance of being first past the post - which, as it's a handicap start doesn't necessarily mean the faster runner wins!

Not much else to report here - at some point I will learn how to put my little team picky in my signature and lose the Goofy (sniff, sniff). But noy now, it's 6pm here now so I'm off to lie on the sofa for a couple of hours. Helen

MightyDuck - We call it the dreadmill or DM for a reason. I can't stand being on there longer than 35 minutes so anyone who can do longer times is amazing. As you probably noticed, flattery will get you everything here. :lmao:

Angie - So glad that you feel good after your workout. Before long you will be passing us again.

Kristi - Great for getting out there. We will provide all the motivation for you, unless of course you are not on the team Panda assigned me to, in which case lifting the remote is great excercise. ;)

Allyson - Great job getting out there. There will be easy days and difficult days but getting the steps in is the most important. It does get easier after that little bump in the beginning.

Helen - That sounds like an interesting race. Although I don't know if I really want to know what people think about me running...

Mel - But lifting the remote on the sofa can be XT if you do it enough times( see above). :rolleyes1 As long as the kids are still long enough, I can bench press them but then they begin to think wiggling will give me more excercise. :lmao:

I decided to go out last night and was able to complete 3 miles and my leg didn't give me any problems. I figure I will take it slow for a little bit longer and make sure it doesn't hurt, then get ready for the half marathon at the end of February. So now I can be ready for the competition instead of just weighing down the team. :rolleyes1 Except for leaving town this weekend I think the training may be back on schedule. Lynnda needs mucho brownie points for getting me/family organized for this trip as well.

Hi team!

Well I got in 5 miles yesterday and it was great to be back out there again! I started off way too fast so my "back" was slower than my "out" but not too bad. I got myself a new watch (Nike, since my Timex Ironman died in the 2nd mile of the marathon) and I like its larger display. Us "master" athletes need all the help we can get!

SamSam - I've always taken plans and modified them so they work for me. Just add in small bits of running - 30 seconds at a time if that's what it takes. You will get there - patience!

Debra - I'm right there with you concentrating on core strength. I had major back issues during the full so I'll really be working on that this year.

Ms. Duck - I think week 2 is ALWAYS harder than week 1. I promise that it will get better and you will begin to enjoy it more. Just stick with the plan and stick with us; we'll get you through!

Allyson - That mental aspect is huge. I am definitely my own worst enemy when running sometimes!

Today I'll be xting with the bike and weights at the Y.

Happy training!
Renee

Ahh! You guys are right where I am today! These are the days when we trudge through workouts with no joy or excitement to them. It will get better so STICK WITH IT! at least thats what I tell myself.

I put together my entire 2008 training program yesterday and it was a bit depressing. Who signed me up for all these races? What was I thinking? Boy is that alot of training! I took the total miles calculator off because I couldn't bear to see what it said.

The whole time I was working on the spread sheet I was thinking that I hate running. That's because I did an interval work out on the dreadmill yesterday. Ran a mile at 8:45mm then dropped down to 10:00mm and timed my recovery then repeated that two more times. first recovery took 5 minutes, second took 8 minutes and the third took um well, more than 11 minutes? :rolleyes1 I felt a little nauseated when I got off the treadmill. I think speed is over rated.

Ms MightyDuck, there are MANY days that I am not all that excited about working out. It's like Allyson said, "at least I did it right?" Thats where accountability plays a part. For me, that means having someone waiting to run with me or else having to report how many miles I ran. Oh and Allyson, Way to go! As for the time etc, you are going to have good days and bad days and occasionally a great day. The key is sticking with it when all those bad days run together.

I'm assuming there's a bridge rather than my having to develop superpowers
:lmao: Wow that sounds like an awesome race! I would love that handicap thing. Glad you found a group to run with, it makes training so much more fun.

Keep it up - spring is coming.
Cecilia

They also told me about a race that sounds fun - it's a 20 miler and goes from an island just off Tasmania to the 'main land' - I'm assuming there's a bridge rather than my having to develop superpowers ... .

Be careful **Helen**. Maybe there is no bridge and this is how the locals weed out false prophets. Only those who can run on water pass the test.

Quick drive by- before the pages start piling on, I've got to say-

Helen, if you have enough self-confidence to even contemplate a race where people look at your running form, bet on you, and pinch for fat:scared1: , you are an even stronger woman than I realized!

I think I can get in a quick run tonight. I'm hoping I've taken off enough time to be back to normal with my IT band. There's a 5k bridge run I'd like to do in a couple of weeks. Yes, I recognize how ridiculous I am to be considering a bridge run when my IT band hates hills, but I have a very good reason to do it.... I did it last year with DD and we were so slow they only had 1 medal left, so of course I gave it to DD, but it's bothered me for a year that I didn't get my medal....:rolleyes1

 We all go through these feelings. Why isn't today easier? Why is this a struggle? Maybe I should just throw in the towel and admit I'm a poser?

But you didn't. You stuck with it, even when it didn't feel good to do so, even when it didn't feel like an accomplishment. And you came here, because deep down you know your WISH team has been there. And that we support and admire you for your efforts & your spirit.

Just trust what the others have said. It's not only the days that are easy or fun that really define us and help make us become stronger. It's the days where we struggle and question ourselves. As Kristi said, like real life. (And yes, when I go through those days I do it kicking and screaming and whining, "But it's not faaaaiiiiirrrr." Hey, whatever gets you through.)

And a quick shout-out to Allyson. Good for you--you've got perserverance, too! :thumbsup2

Greetings Race Team -

Did 40 on the TM this morning. I really pushed myself and although is was hard, it felt good! :thumbsup2

Today I have an appt with my pod to finally get my custom orthodics. I have a big bag of my active running shoes to bring with me. I want him to see the wear patterns and see what he thinks. This should be interesting.

MSDave - Thanks for noticing I was missing. I was just teasing everyone. ;) I was in what seemed like a Groundhog Day meeting all last week preparing for a meeting that was yesterday. Now I feel like a free woman. YAY!:yay: Back to more important things, like WISH. How is your new job going? Is this in addition to your regular job? Sounds like you might be putting in a lot of hours there.

WFloydBill - OK maybe I wasn't totally missing from the DIS. You know I do have to keep up on the DCL and now the DVC forums. I know, I know, it's tough but I manage. I did get a voicemail from Sunny right before the Half. Cam actually spoke to her. Umm, Lynnda needs mucho brownie points for a lot of things, I think. :teeth:

Leana - Oh I hope you feel better. You are such an active person I can imagine having bronchitis must be so annoying for you.

Jackie - Oh you made me LOL! :rotfl: I'm back now so don't you worry! I'll be there with you!

Christa - Oh Christa......Prayers for your mom.

Diane - Umm, well, I haven't signed up for the Challenge because, well, ummmm.... :rolleyes1

Vicki - Here's a looong distance wave!

Kristi - OMG there's no Goo in your signature!! Get off the internet.

Helen - "Superpowers" Let me know how that works out for you.

OK I have to clean up my office. Which means putting everything that I haven't gotten to in the last week and a half into nice neat little piles. Which I will then ignore and go out to lunch. :)

I HATE the DREADmill! I have done 10 miles on it but hated every second of it...but anyway....to encourage you, I have been running a long time and todays WO was not easy either. Sometimes you just have an off day...but WTG for sticking to it. About the stitch...all my running buddies say that is from dehydration.....I agree with them......if you stick with the running, there will come a time where you really enjoy it.

Ran 5.6 miles on the trails with an 8.30 pace. I think it was hard b/c after swimming 2000 yrds yesterday, I hopped on my bike and rode a little over 10 miles...into a huge headwind....it was hard to keep the bike even moving so the ride was not fast. I have lots of respect for the WISHers who have done 1/2 and full Ironmans...or is it Ironmen?:rotfl:

So now you are spending time with others and not this group. I see how it is, getting too good for us now. ;) :lmao:

So how is Sunny since you seem to have the inside info here.

Lynnda already gets lots of brownie points just for putting up with me but that was already a given and I try not to bring it up too much. :rolleyes1

Too funny, I just asked Stephen that same question last night! :lmao: :lmao: I was flipping through his Triathlete magazine, trying to get some naming inspirations, I just kept seeing the same names over and over and over again.

Allyson and Mighty Duck--Stick with it, trust me, it will get easier. Good for you for finishing your workout and not quitting!! :cheer2: :cheer2:
