Wk of Feb 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Dena-with training, you could do it without losing any weight. Trust me, there are some very skinny people there & some very not skinny people there. You will not even be close to being the biggest there. I can guarantee there were thousands of people there over 200 lbs. It is a very accepting, supportive atmosphere. Everyone (even us little dogs) are made to feel comfortable & that we belong there (because we do :goodvibes ) If you are wanting to lose weight, go ahead & start working on it now. This is the time when you "train to train" and work on weight loss. Then in the fall is when the serious, scheduled training goes. Someone here said before that for every pound you lose, you take 5 sec. off your time automatically. Plus less weight is better on the knees. Good luck! You can do it!!!!!

Christa- WTG on the 4's  You could probably see the cramp because since your such a small size 4 now, the muscle had now where else to go but out :goodvibes

Maherae-if you are going to the chain athletic stores, their sales people probably dont know what they are talking about. Find a running store & you will find plenty to chose from. Welcome! You have plenty of time to work on that pace. Just keep in putting in the steps & you will get there.

I'm going to try walking again today. However, its going to be on the dreadmill so I'm not looking forward to it at all. I am have also narrowed down my choices for bikes & am trying to make the decision. Do I get the cheaper bike that is good & I know will be good for what I'm wanting it for or do I spend a couple hundred more for the one that is really good & I would have more fun riding. Being a SAHM it's hard to justify spending so much more when I already spend so much on this far from free sport. DH is great & has said to get whichever I really want. Decisions, decisions........

I have to get headed to the pool to a get a swim in before class but...

Tiff- 2 things to consider in making your bike choice. The first is that it is a long term investment. Bikes are not like running shoes that we replace every three months-unless someone else is paying for it ala Lance. If you would enjoy one more... and that goes to the second point. So you're a SAHM. That means that one of your most impt jobs is being a role model for your kids to develop a healthy lifestyle. If they see you enjoying and have fun at something, they'll think about trying it themselves. So again, a few hundred dollars now may make a big difference when you are still riding it 2-3 years down the road.

Jodi- come up from CT to Boston on Mar 12 and do the Boston Run to Remember with us. There is a 5 mile race in addition to the Half Marathon.

Lynne

Hi Lynne,

I will have to check into the marathon and see if my DH is willing to drive me......not sure that I am totally ready for it but I will think about it, do you know when registration ends?

christa- Actually it was likely caused by how you were holding your feet while kicking. When I used to swim 5000-7000 yds/practice, people used to especially have issues when using fins. I've never had my calf cramp but I'll have the bottom of my foot(or feet) cramp from pushing off the wall doing flip turns. Think floppy feet when kicking, rather than pointing your toes. Pointing your toes puts pressure on the calf.
Lynne
Thanks Lynne! The cramp happened when I pushed off the wall. I think I do point my feet while swimming...Floppy feet...got it!
My Leg still hurts from it...I hope it holds up while I ride my bike to pick up the DDs from school. I will only go 10 to 12 miles...but it is really hilly!

ANOTHER QUESTION from someone who knows nothing about a bike!
DH has agreed to pay for the rest of my bike for my BDay(it would end up being around $150..I have the rest saved up)....But I am thinking that I could save a little more and get a better bike in the long run (no pun intended.) I have picked out a WSD Trek..it is $630 and the next one up is $1000 + a little more. As I have mentioned, I do have a crap bike I could ride in the tri. I have trained on it.
Here is the question....
Should I go ahead and get the bike or wait and get a more expensive (and better I guess) bike?
Christa

OH..I almost forgot! There is a new Marathon in NC..at the Outerbanks. Here is the website:http://www.obxmarathon.org/
If anyone wanted to travel to NC I would LOVE TO DO IT. It is around 6 hrs from Charlotte.

Oooh, Christa, don't tempt me! I love the OBX, but I am seriously considering going to Washington, DC for Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October and then "maybe" Disney again. I don't think I could squeeze that one it. Are you planning on Disney again?

Dena, I hope the you and the family are feeling better. :goodvibes

Maherae, I have had good luck finding running socks at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Just look for 'moisture wicking' or vapor wicking, something like that on the packing. I found some great adidas at TJMaxx that I have been running in and no blisters and my feet are completely dry. I ran the Disney marathon in them, they were great.

Off to the gym for another workout, maybe a run on the dreadmill. :rolleyes1

Lynne, I love that! Thank you from another SAHM, I taught high school Algebra and Calculus :teacher: for 13 years before I had my DS8 and DD6. But now I have decided to stay at home for a few years while they are small.

To keep my feet wet, I tutor a few hours a week in my home, but it is not the same as getting dressed up everyday to go to work. When I read about the careers you all have, I am very envious.

I am so impressed by all of you who hold down full time jobs, parent and still find the time to train for marathons. ::yes::

Colleen

Tiff - get the better one!!! I started out with real entrylevel bike, and it was not long until I wanted to upgrade!!!! I would have saved more $$$$ by getting the nicer one in the first place!!!

Christa - OK - that is a really hard one. I would want to be mature enough to wait for the nicer bike, but I'm probably not. Since the ride is not that long, ideally, you could use your old one and save for the better one. I think you can't go wrong that way. (I know I would really want to have it for hte tri though!!!) Is there anyone who will loan you a road bike for hte tri and then you can save for the nicer one???? If you were here, you could borrow mine!!! I'll bet ron knows someone!!!!!! UGH - hard decision. If you can delay gratification (which i'm not good at) save for the nicer one!!

Lynn - I read your post about calorie intake on the TEA theread. This is a big issue for me as well. What I generally do is watch my sat. fat intake and then don't worry about the calories, b/c I like high cal foods anyway! I'm really interested to know what you come to on that issue. keep me posted!

Minnie- how are you doing? Feeling any better?

Lynne - Thanks for asking. I haven't posted lately because everytime I do I feel like I am putting a major downer on the thread :guilty:

The pain is not any better unfortunately. I felt something pop in my back yesterday so I went back to my original chiro. He helped with that but not the hip/leg area. He thinks that it is likely a disk or nerve issue as nothing has helped. He was very suprised that the ortho did not do the MRI and thinks that it might be because I want to have it done at a competing ortho's office instead of the hospital because of the price. He recommends I get a referral to another ortho for a 2nd opinion. I'm almost to that point as PT and medicine seems to have no effect.

BTW - Each time I go to PT and the chiro says my pelvis/sacrum area is shifted. It goes back in but won't stay. The chiro thinks this is due to compensating for the pain.

This has been an interuption by another lovely whining downer post by ::MinnieMo . Back to your regularly scheduled training thread.....

Wow - everyone is really chatty this week. I couldn't read since I was on the road yesterday, and now I'm behind and gotta work. Hope everyone does well on their training, bike purchases, horses, and sizes...

More later

:yoda:

Good morning. :sunny:

This morning I did 45 min @ 3.7 @ 1% and it was surprisingly easy. Maybe it's time to ramp things up a bit. :thumbsup2

Thank you for all your congratulations on Mist. I hope to find out today when I get her. Actually, riding is great for my legs. When I ride a lot my calves get so muscular (OK, maybe not such a good look in panty hose but ask me if I care.) and I think this will be really good for my knees. :p

Melissa - :lmao: on the hardtail comment. I come from a family of motorcycle riders so "chopper" was the first thing I thought of! :rotfl:

Christa, honey....a size 4 wouldn't even fit on ONE of my legs. But you go girl! That's wonderful! :cheer2: Oh and BTW, you know you can put those bananas under a nice big scoop of ice cream! :teeth:

Lynne - The trial was last Friday and the judge came back with a "no decision". I don't get it. This is a "no brainer" to me. :sad2:

Maherae - Thanks but I still have a long way to go. And I only have 332 days to do it! :bitelip:

Dena - I weigh more then you and I FULLY intend to walk the Half in '07. I am doing WW, but it's going pretty slow. :confused3

Jodi - Wow! You are doing great!

Minnie - STOP IT! YOU ARE NOT A WHINER! And don't you DARE not post! Don't you know what happens around here when someone goes missing??? We panic and there is a flurry of "Where is she??" posts. Keep us posted please. We worry about you. :grouphug:

Dave - We have to wean you off that work stuff. :rotfl2:

Judy

Judy - Yeah, work does get in the way of important things like the DIS and working out and stuff doesn't it?

OK all, I need some pixie dust. I have another grant being reviewed by the National Institute of Health tomorrow. This is not the one I just submitted last week, but a different one I submitted in October (yes, this is my job - writing grants). These grants have become so, so, difficult to get because federal funding for biomedical research is drying up. Let's just say that it seems as though our current administration has decided to spend our money in different ways than science. Anyhow, I don't mean to be political, and don't want to rub people the wrong way. But I could use some good vibrations that my grant is reviewed well.

Dena - you could do the half w/o losing any weight. As long as you train and put the steps in, you'll be fine.

I did my first 1/2 and full marathons at WDW in jan. and I wiegh 230.

I have been checking into this one and even printed out the course. We love the Outerbanks. Is it crazy to think about doing this one and then do the WDW one? Not sure how long in between I should wait.

Hi WISH Team!

Cam, what a fantastic family pic! Brrrr! is all I can say about that event.
Also, thanks for handling that great catch up on page 4. I am up to there and have decided that I must post now or it will never get into the thread.

MickeySP! The photos, what a difference! That is some accomplishment.

Good question about getting up early to do those workouts. I can get up to do the 20 min. Winsor Pilates b4 work, just can’t get the TM run thing going and outside in the dark is not an option for me.

I will probably keep cheering everyone on to sign up! Whatever race you choose, YOU CAN DO IT! There is plenty of time to get in that training to train and if this 55 y/o can do it, you young ‘uns can too! (It was my first marathon, and I did Goofy…first half was last year)

Busy me here. Work is in turmoil. DS is healing. He is off pain meds, but still in pain...at least he is dealing with it w/o chemicals. Doc ok'd showers for him! WE are all glad of that. Whew! :teeth: One week down, five more to go...

I’ve been given the go from the podiatrist to continue on with my routines. I may lose my toenail…the BIG one on my left foot; that’s the athlete in me! Thankfully it is not related to any other problems I travel with as I go so I am glad of it.
Must dash off now, I’ll be baaacck!

OMG!! I am freaking out here, I officially LOST A TOENAIL too! :scared1:

I just finished my 6 miles on the dreadmill and knew my toe felt a little funny, but when I got home, yikes, most of my toenail on the toe next to my big toe was almost completely off the nailbed.

It had turned blue after the marathon, but I thought it would grow out. A few weeks ago, I went to my local running store to be sure I was running in the proper size shoes. After a half an hour analysis, he said I was in the correct size but he thinks that when I run longer distances I am curling up my toes.

A healthy nail will grow in properly? Won't it??

Maybe I should cross train a bit more until I can figure out how to solve this curly toe problem of mine. :sad2:

Colleen

Colleen -- Please accept my condolences on your loss :teeth: I apparently curl my second toe a LOT, because they are black on both feet. Unfortunately, mine have not fallen off, but are so thick it is horrible. I haven't stopped wogging, though, I do try to concentrate on not curling my toes.

Tammy - I am not sure about WDW for 2007...We always wait until June to talk about it. DH has forgotten the pain by then! :confused3 This past year I did Charlotte 12/3 and then did Goofy...It was fine for me. I'm not even sure I will do this one though. Our Charlotte group is talking about it.

Colleen - Let me know if you sign up for the OBX...It may be too much with the other 2 though. :sad2:

Colleen and tiger lily - COOL! A lost (or losing a) toenail. I have the ugly toe nails so losing one is well not really a loss. They are getting better though. DH and Ron are getting ready to loose one too. Just soak it in Epsom (sp?) salts and put peroxide and neosporin on it (I cannot spell any of those words..sorry).

Minnie - You are not a whiner. Let us cheer you up. Please post more! We  you! :grouphug: :wizard: I can show you pics of my bike to make you laugh! :thumbsup2

Dave - :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your grant!

Judy - AHHH a banana split....perfecto!

Sunny - You said you have been tired lately...Me to...I closed my eyes swimming the other day. :rolleyes1

I rode my crap bike (I need a pic for you guys - you will :lmao: if you see it.) to DD's school this morning. I know it was at least 12 miles, maybe more. Will let you know later. I saw 3 beautiful deer in a field as I was riding. I started talking to them and they pretended to understand me. Then several cars whissed past me and probably thought I was  for talking to myself...b/c they were going to fast to see the deer!

You guys have me rolling today :lmao:

Christa-- Size 4 is TINY. You are sooooo like me. As soon as I can get into a new size I immediately assume it must be a "big size x". But let me tell you, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BIG SIZE 4!!!!!!!! Awsome job :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Are you still using the "Kitchen Sink" plan or have you reverted to WW :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Ah shucks  Hey, maybe I could quit my day job if I charged people to read MY MARATHON story. But since just the two of you are reading it, I'll have to charge you each a gazillion dollars. But MelR you get a discount since you are sending traffic to sunnyshopper.com :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Dear, dear Colleen :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: You don't really expect to have a healthy toe nail in this lifetime do you? :rotfl: My "runner's toe" has become a strange mixture of black deformed nail grown into a mountain callouse. I keep intending to deal with it some day... but there's so much running to do... :rolleyes1

I had two apts this morning with about 1 1/2 hours in between so I darted over to the Y and did 5 miles on the TM. I meant to do 6 but I was so tired.

Christa-- we should compare notes, I really think I'm close to a break through on the napping while excersizing thing. :rotfl2:

I think I've exceeded my allotment of :rotfl2: :lmao: for the week in this one post!

Sunny
