Wk of Feb 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi, everyone! Looking forward to catching up with everyone, but wanted to post SOMETHING about training, since I hardly ever stay on topic! ;)

Last night, I had a few minutes before my yoga/pilates class, so I satisfied my itch to get on the TM. I probably should have warmed up, but time was limited, so I did a bit at 4.2 and ran for 2 whole minutes (though only at 5 mph), but have a new personal best for a half mile in 6:36 (if my math is right, if I'd kept up that pace, I would have done a mile in 13:12!

Dona - excellent job on your 2 mile walk. :thumbsup2 WTG :cool1:, and we're all really glad that your heart checkup came out OK. That is great news!

Cam - great job on your half-mile PR. :woohoo: Warm up, who needs a warm up? Especially after that Polar Plunge! I must admit I like the Off Topic posts. It gives me a nice distraction.

Judy - You are incredible individual to take the time to post like you do. It made my day!

Thank you everyone that posted. I had a painful day and it lifted my spirits :cloud9:

Okay saga continues - I went to PT last night and an additional therapist was brought in to see me as the pain has gotten worse. After doing a variety of things he said it was clear that I had gotten a misdiagnosis. He believes that I have a disk issue. More than likely a bulging or herniated disk. He said I really need an MRI and gave me a couple DR suggestions. I will be calling my DR today to ask for a referral for a 2nd opinion.

They also scheduled water therapy for today. Hopefully that will give me some relief as the pain is intense today :sad2:

Dave - :wizard: on your grant!

Cam - Great job on the PR :woohoo:

Donac - Wonderful news :cheer2:

Minnie - I am sending :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: your way too. I want to wish you all the best today, and am so, so sorry you have so much pain to deal with. I hope you get a little comfort from your friends here on the WISH board. And I hope your water therapy brings some relief too.

Good morning all! :sunny:

I did my standard 45 min @ 3.7 @ 1% this morning. No issues. :thumbsup2

But let me tell you what my wonderful darling husband did. :cloud9:

Since I am on the TM at 5:00am, there is positively nothing on tv. Just really stoopid infomercials. I guess I had mentioned that to him on more then one occasion. Plus, I have all these DVDs of my favorite movies that I just have never had time to watch. Most of them are still in the wrapper. So last night he comes home with a brand new DVD player and hooks it up for me to the tv in front of the TM. Both problems solved. Now I can watch my favorite movies as I work out. What a doll he is! I know I have to pay attention to my form so I will be sure to check it often. But geez, it sure makes it a lot more fun! Isn't he the best!?!?!?!

Cam - WTG on that TM last night! :thumbsup2 You're going to be running the Full soon enough! You go girl!

Tiff - Excellent on the running! You keep it up! You're doing great! :cheer2:

Mel - I have TOTAL WDW envy. I'd give anything to be there now. :earboy2:

Dave - Keep us posted about the grant and we'll be sure to keep you entertained with our posts about toenails and undergarments. :lmao:

Oh Minnie - I hope you have this resolved soon. I'm sending P&PD your way in ginormous amounts! :wizard: :goodvibes :goodvibes :wizard: And yes, I post every day. It's a way of being at work and actually looking like I'm doing something productive as I type away. :surfweb:

Oh here's some entertainment for you all...This morning at 6:30 I was outside doing barn chores when I walked around the back of the barn and come face to face with the BIGGEST skunk I have ever seen! We looked at each other for a second then I backed up a few feet and spoke gently to him. I think it was a him because he was so huge! He didn't seem at all fazed that I was there so he just went about his business of looking for snacks and I followed him around, about ten feet behind him. It was SO COOL! He was so beautiful! So big and fluffy and shiny! He looked like a show skunk! But then we went thru the fence and into the woods and that was that. :bitelip:

Judy - A SKUNK? :scared1:

Dave - When will you know how the "grant meeting" went?

Ran this morning I did not set my watch or know the distance. between 3 and 5 I think. :confused3 It was with Bree, Ron and a girl named Kim. I had such a good time. It was over b/4 I knew it! :woohoo:

As a fellow 4:00 a.m. TM runner, Court TV is my favorite station. They run repeats from primetime the previous evening. Your husband is a doll for buying you a DVD player. It sure helps the time fly by. Enjoy all of those movies you've been meaning to watch :)

I am another 4:30 AM tm person. My basement also does not have cable but recently they started running Odd Couple at 4 and Taxi at 4:30 before I turn on the news. I also have a portable DVD player that I can bring down to watch instead.

Thanks guys, now you know when I say if I can do it anyone can - I mean it!

Boy go away for a couple days and the thread explodes.

Magslite - I know the feeling. The balance thing is tough but I have just resolved I need to do this for me. I do save my longer runs for when I know everyone is already occupied for a few hours.

Cam - Don't you just love those cramps. I have had trouble since the 1/2 with my left hamstring. It tightens and takes forever to relax.

Lynne - Thanks for the heads up, it really helps to know the course will be relatively flat. I am still nervous about the Run to Remember it seems like lots of "real" runners and not too many of us woggers.

Mahera - I used cotton the first few times in 5ks - what a mistake. My feet were so sweaty and the felt really chaffed. I now use these: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...eDescending&parentPage=family&searchId=717809
A bit expensive but I figure I only need 3 or 4 pairs and they are a great investment. I used them in WDW and had no foot trouble at all.

Christa - Size 4!! I am trying to get to a 12! LOL!

Colleen - It sounds awful, losing a toenail. So far I have been lucky no black toes or nails. I do have a scar on my elbow where I gracefully hit the pavement in front of the Contemporary.

Minnie - Pixie Dust your way, I hope they will nail the problem down and get you back to 110% soon.

I was so psyched did a 4 mile wog yesterday, I was determined not to look at my time but just do the walk and check at the end. I went by my pace watch and I was thrilled to finish in 52:10 - a 13:02 pace YEAH!! That is my best time ever. I get the feeling the cross training and weights I have added have a whole lot to do with it.

Now the bad news I was going to add in another mile but my knee locked up, I tried to walk it out but OMG the pain got so much worse I could barely limp home. I couldn't bend it for about an hour but slowly over the course of the night it worked its way out. I am not sure what it was, anyone ever have this happen? It felt stiff and painful to put any weight on.

I am doing a short 3 today but will really watch it this time, I do not want any injuries just when things seem to be getting together.

HI guys. Life just went crazy, but I wanted to give a quick report. My doc'sa runner!! Woo hoo! SHe wants to do teh WDW marathon someday adn is really leaning towards teh DL half! Made me feel much better. SHe's thinking sstress fracture, possible spurred on by fall during the marathon. Told me to up the icing and the advil and the I can run again, but just 2 to 3 every other day. SOunds liek a plan to me, because I don't want to lose the musle I have, Then I drag the exercycle from the basment for in between.

She took an x-ray, but won't know until MOnday. If it doens't improve in 2 weeks, they'll do a boone scan. I'm just relieved that she's a runner. A non-runner might have said something like no running for 3 weeks or whatever adn that would have killed me. Off to e-mail her some marathon pics. ;)

Minnie -- Just wanted to WISH you the best today at water therapy. I really hope it helps the pain. I am so so sorry you are going through this. You know that if your WISH friends had anything to say about this we'd beat up all those doctors, etc. who have failed in getting you better the past few months. Please keep us updated. Sending  and :wizard: and :goodvibes: , sweetie.

Carrie -- So glad you are getting an educated opinion from your Doc. Hope she figures it out pretty quickly and comes up with a good plan that keeps you training but also doesn't inhibit healing. :goodvibes:

Hey, Dave -- I have been thinking about that grant review meeting all morning. Hope everyone that gathered at 8:30 to talk about you had enough coffee and some good happy mood making donuts! ;)

You can do this! :wizard: :wizard: on the knee! Never had that b/4 but it sounds painful!

OK about the bike...not that anyone asked, but I feel like I can inflict you guys with my bike saga! :teeth:
I told DH that I was going to save more $$ for the bike. I thought he would be glad, but he was like..."You have been telling everyone all you want is a bike...blah blah blah"...I said, OK get me the bike, I thought you would be glad. I am :confused3 :confused3 ! So if he is willing to get me the new bike, I am willing to take it. :teeth: :thumbsup2

Christa - does that mean he is getting you the nicer bike????? :thumbsup2

Today we, EC and I, were planning on mt. biking then trail running, but we only biked. She was feeling tired (probably from the 50k) so we skipped the run. I was actually bummed, but my new TM is coming today, so I'll do my run on it to break it in!!!!! :confused3

Dave - we need an update!

Minnie - hang in there. I'm sorry you are having such a hard time with the diagnosis. Hopefully, once you can be sucessfully dx, they will be able to treat correctly and solve the prob.

Carrie - good luck with you medcical

Cam - way to go.

Judy - SkUNK YUCK!!! Glad the encounter was not as personal as it could have been!!!

Morning guys - running same as ever (ie I'm doing it), but had to post to say that Judy's 'show skunk' made me laugh and laugh. Am now having visions of very coiffured women trotting round a show pen with fluffy black and white bundles on leads - and an entire crowd of spectators with pegs on their noses. Hmm, do you think that's why I write for a living!!!

And as for the toenail talk - while I was in my post marathon depression, I compiled myself a list of reasons why I should be glad I can't do Goofy this year (more on that in a minute!) and one of them was that I currently have all my toenails and I can paint them again as I don't need to check what colour they've gone post my long runs!!!

Anyway re Goofy - tim and are are supposed to be going away in 3 weeks, so he's finally put his leave form in and his company are being very sniffy about him taking time NOT at Xmas. As he currently has 35 days of accrued holiday, plus they get something like 6 public holiday days over Xmas - this would mean that if they stop him going, he's got to take eight weeks holiday over the Xmas period - hmmm, wonder what that could mean!! He has explained to them that he's not really sure they want him off for two months at Xmas, but that he'll happily take it if they don't let him go next month, so we'll see what happens. I'm not even thinking about teh week he's supposed to be taking in September for the half yet - I might be there on my own!!!

anyway, that's enough from me today - oh, sunny, you can have my share of teh little facies - I don't know how to make them appear!!!! Helen

Helen - I'm glad I made you laugh! He was actually quite pretty and didn't smell at all! :teeth:

I have a question about "rest" days.

I am doing the treadmill five days a week, with Wed & Sat off. I have noticed lately that on Wed and Sat I am very....irritable. I mean more so then normally. I'm...I don't know how to describe it. Edgy. Restless. Is this fairly normal? I was wondering if I should find something else to do on "rest" days.

Maybe I could get on the stationary bike. No, I'm supposed to be resting my legs. Maybe I could do free weights or the BowFlex. What do you guys think? :confused3

Or maybe I should just be irritable and restless and figure no one will probably notice the difference anyway.

Judy

Greetings Everyone:

Boy, I couldn't post this afternoon because I was busy in the lab. Whew, long afternoon and I am absolutely beat. I could use some motivation to get out for my walk today. I have to finish up some stuff in the lab, have another meeting this evening after dinner and putting the princesses to bed, and I was going to try to walk after that meeting around 8:00pm tonight. I'm feeling beat though, and could easily see me just plopping on the couch to watch Survivor.

Thanks for all the good wishes on the grant review. All I know at this point is that the review committee met. They usually post the scores of the grant on the internet within a day or two. Since my committee met on a Thursday, it will probably be early next week before I find out my score. They will post one of two things, either "unscored" meaning that the grant will not be funded, or they will post a number from 100-500 (closer to 100 the better). Funding is so tight these days that the review committees are encouraged to not even score 75% of the grants - this is called "triaging" a grant and is meant to save the committee work so they can focus on the upper 25% that they consider worth funding. So 1/2 to 3/4 of the grants don't even get discussed fully in committee. At this point, I'm just hoping that my grant was discussed and receives a score. I'll be happy if I'm not triaged at this point.

OK, now that I posted my grant update, I wanted to reply to some of the other posts.

Minnie - I just wanted to wish you luck again with your water therapy. I really hope that brings you some relief.

Judy - show skunk!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I love it, and Helen's description of the show with everyone walking around with their skunks on leads is priceless. Maybe they could make a "Best in Show" skunk movie.

To all you early rising exercisers: Judy, Sara, Dona, and anyone else that I'm sure I missed - I'm impressed! I can't get going at all until I've had my coffee and something to eat. I usually get up and drink my coffee while surfing the net. Good for you all.

MickeySP - hope your 3 miler went better today.

Carrie - yahoo! glad your Doc is a runner. That will definitely help matters, and I'm sure the Doc will be sympathetic with your desire to get out there and run. Good luck with the running, and hope the x-rays come out OK.

Christa - OK, not that you asked my opinion, but just make sure you are really getting the bike you want and will be happy with. Not just getting a bike now because the money is there. It sounded like from the other opinions on the thread the more expensive bike did have a lot of benefits. I'm sure if you explain that to your hubby he would understand why you want to wait and save a little longer.

MelR - Your amazing that you want to get out there again so quickly after the 50k. Great job. Have fun with the treadmill. What kind did you get?

Hey, here's an idea to add to the toenail discussion. If you all just go ahead and paint your toenails black, they would all match, and people would think you were doing it to be hip and cool. OK, I can't believe I just commented on toenail painting. Scratch that, nevermind...

Judy - whew, I wonder if I will ever get to the point where I'm wondering what other exercise I can do on my "rest day". You must be an athlete if you need to have some kind of activity even when you are not running. Congratulations!

Dave - My theory is that rest is also an essential part of training and if you rest this evening, it might actually be better than if you workout. I know, I know, it's just hard for an athlete to rest!!!!! Have a good night whatever you choose.

Finally - where's Sunny today? Are the moderators not letting you post because you used up your smilies?
