Ok Wake up it's Saturday and everyone is snuggled under the covers, maybe one foot sticking out, and completely at peace with the world.

Come on get up I have a challenge for everyone.

There is a ton of research done on athletic performance, weight loss/control and fitness in general. We have more information available about fitness than just about any other subject. So here is my challenge.

Starting this week get a minimum of 20 miles either walking or running or both. 20 miles is the magic number (according to several studies done) to get the most benefit from your exercise. Between 20 and 35 miles a week is where the largest amount of benefit is gained.

Drink water, a minimum of a big glass in the morning when you get up, a big glass or bottle at lumch and a big glass at dinner. 64 ozs is the suggested minimum so three of those 22 oz bottles or three big glasses will get it done.

Cut out the fried food. Period end of story, if it's fried don't eat it, it ain't food. Exception of course will be vacations, on vacation you are away from home so the calories don't count (yep, sicence has proved it).

I challence everyone to make these three changes to their lifestyle. If you are already doing these things speak up and tell how it's worked for you.

OK, I'll go.

First need to mention that I joined Weight Watchers at work last July. A lot of this had to do the the WW program. There are other great programs and just good common sense, so I am not touting WW, it's just the program I used that taught me how to eat healthier.

I run around 19 - 21 miles a week. Time just really doesn't allow more until I get my weekend runs up over 10 miles. I used to run less than 10 miles a week on a treadmill and thought that was great. Now it takes 1 - 2 miles to kind of warm up. Seriously, I am more tired at mile 1 than I am mile 6.

I normally do not eat fried food. Do I like it? YEA! But, I don't normally eat it. It is amazing that the longer you don't have something the less you really want it. I did have fried haddock while up in Syracuse, but that was on vacation and doesn't count, as you say, it is a scientific fact! Besides, it was fish. Anyway, I eat pretty healthy now and don't miss a lot of the other stuff I ate. I still love Pizza and Chinese and once every couple of months we'll splurge on some fried chicken.

I drink a lot of water. More than 64 oz per day, usually. I always have a bottle of after with me at work, in the car and at home, so I don't really count the ounces.

I feel great. I lost 32 lbs and have been at weight watchers goals for a few months now. Went in for my pre op for the surgery on Friday and they mentioned how low my resting heart rate was. I just kind of smiled because that doesn't happen by accident, it took a lot of work.

So, bottom line is this is basic healthy information that is taught by weight watchers and other programs, except the 20 miles a week part. But they do stress exercise.

Anyone can do this, just need to want to. I went to lunch twice this week with some people at work that are in WW but complain that they aren't losing weight. First of all they do not exercise. At lunch they ordered very fattening food, most of it fried, and ate a lot of it. The only reason I say this is that these programs work. The folks, which I love dearly, will now tell people they tried WW and it didn't work. Well ya it does, you just need to do what you are supposed to do. I'm not a perfect eater by any means, but compared to how I ate a year ago, I am a saint :) OK, off my soapbox.

Thanks for listening I'm off to run.

Thank you for sharing Duane. Yes the programs all really do work and the best are based on common sense.

We are nation killing ourselves with the "good life". I personally think a 10 mile LSD walk with my beautiful lady is the good times. Of course a race at disney is icing on the cake.

you 2 area cracking me up!

today was our LSD and we did 12 miles. that brings my weekly count up to 20 and I still have tomorrow to go and we are planning on 4 miles for speed/incline work.

Dave? What is the 20-35 mile thing? Is it the magic distance that will make me loose this ice cream pudge???

Yes between 20 and 35 miles you get the largest benefit from your exercising. They used to think that elite runners needed to do 100 plus miles a week but a lot of studies say 25 to 35 is the most benefit and over 75 has little if any benefit.

The problem with any type of studies like these is that everyone is unique, so exact figures which would work for every one would be impossible. But they do give general guidelines.

Speaking of ice cream I hear some Ben and Jerry's fat free frozen yogurt calling my name.

Dave, thanks so much for the challenge. I will be doing my best to make it happen. I am starting with the 5 miles I put in yesterday. I try to drink a lot of water, but that has slipped some over the last month. Fried foods, well the Friday Date Nights DH and I enjoy often include wings for me. I'm working on letting that part of life go.

CHICKEN WINGS ARE FRIED!!!!!! I'm crushed:upsidedow my comfort zone has a hole.

Ok wings don't count because of their theraputic value, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Dave....where do you get your energy from????

You are great!

Okay.. I am jumping on this.... I started Jenny Craig about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I have lost 9 lbs as of last week. I weigh in again tomorrow... so.. I don't know what the new number is. I have not be walking/running at all. I have barely had time to shower, let alone exercise. My show opened this weekend to RAVE reviews   and now I can have SOME time for me. I am going walking in about 10 minutes... when I get out of work. I have a rehearsal at 7:00 ... so.. I have 2 hours to myself. I plan to get my mileage up... so.. good challenge Dave!!

Have a great time in the Mustang.. wish I could join ya!!

Kathy

Hi Dave!

I was trying to get in miles for the week but those darn storms! Tonight I would normally go for 4 miles but barely into my walk (hadn't even started running yet tonight!) I heard thunder and saw the flash. It was time to use the 'flash & bang' theory and THEN i started to to jog back to the car LOL

All I managed tonight was 1.75 miles. Grrr!!! I'm going to try again tomorrow, unless things have changed there wasn't any rain forecasted for Wednesday. Actually I'll then be a bit ahead of my week since I typically take Wednesday off from the park. :)

I did managed to get in 24 miles last week. Might have been 25 since I can't remember all the 1/4 and 1/2 miles LOL My running calender runs Monday to Sunday.

Kathy!!! It's sooo nice to see you. I haven't checked the weekly thread in ages so seeing your Tough Guy on some of the other threads lately has given me a chuckle. I just LOVE that photo. It was so nice to meet you at the dessert party and I can't wait to say Hi in person again at ToT :flower3:
