wisdom teeth extraction...scared!!!

I've had my top two wisdom teeth removed. I was lucky they were not impacted. The first one I went to a regular dentist because I had a bad toothache. He dug it, it was horrible. I ended up having to have stitches. When the other one was going bad, he sent me to an oral surgeon. He had it out 1-2-3, no problem. Just had novacaine.

Two words... conscious sedation. It uses a combination of tranquilizers like ativan, and nitrous(laughing gas). I had six teeth pulled at once, felt and remembered nothing, and was barely swollen or in pain after because my jaw was so relaxed. Not only is it safer than iv sedation, it usually costs much less. Call your surgeon and see if it's an option, if it is he should prescribe you a tranq to take beforehand. Good luck!

I had the "twilight" it was a combination of IV sedatives and nitrous oxide. I DID "wake up" a few times during it because I quit breathing and the dentist shook me awake to tell me to breathe. But it didn't bother/scare me as the sedatives made me very errr happy. I don't remember much for the next few days after surgery as I had a bad infection and lots of pain and was given LOTS of painkillers. Hope yours goes much better than mine! Also of they use dissolvable sutures make sure they are actually dissolving after a few days. Mine never did and it caused the infection to worsen.

I heard of that. Will ask when I call tomorrow.

Did you not discuss with the dentist whether you would be sedated? I recently had two teeth extracted and I had oral sedation. My dentist said it was illegal for him to do IV sedation in his office; it had to be done in a hospital.

I guess it is state law in Florida. He was quite emphatic that it couldn't be done in the office. I suspect that he had no one on staff qualified/certified to do IV sedation. We really didn't get into it after he assured me that I'd feel no pain. That was good enough for me.

Yeah I am strongly debating which to choose. I hear a lot of people wake up in the middle of an operation when they get the twilight stuff

That's unlikely. DD was in the recovery area in 15 minutes from the start of anesthesia! It just doesn't take that long.

I don't mean with just wisdom teeth extraction, other surgeries to. Google it

Not to scare you, but to be safe- From experience, please do not have any anesthesia (sedation) without there being an anesthesiologist present, they are experienced if anything goes wrong. Most oral surgeons can give anesthesia and rarely there is aproblem, but if a rare complication arises, do you want them managing it?

My 18 yr old just had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed under "light anesthesia" by a very experienced oral surgeon. At the end of the procedure she wouldn't wake up (breathing fine), needed ambulance ride to hospital and eventually woke up. I've spoken to anesthesiologists i know and they think this is crazy. You want someone present who frequently handles emergencies just in case.

Valium, local, all fine without anesthesiologist. After procedure lots of ice, pain medication and don't use straws as you want the clot to form.

I only had 3 wisdom teeth and had them all removed at the same time. All were impacted and my two bottom ones were wonky, laying sideways underneath my other teeth. Anyway, getting them out was a breeze. I went in, they put me out, and then I woke up and felt fine...

Cut to a few hours later.. My dad had taken me to get them out and was dropping me back off at home and I ended up being locked out of the house. Apparently the anesthesia made me a bit emotional because I just started sobbing about being locked out and my dad had NO idea what to do. He called my mom in a panic. Hilarious to think about it now :lmao:

Anyway. I ended up having a dry socket even though I did everything I was told and that was NOT a fun recovery. The recovery, for me, was way worse than the procedure. Make sure you have ice packs and try not to get a dry socket. It sucked. A lot.

My dd recently had three wisdom teeth extracted - one was impacted. Her pediatrician dentist (yes she still likes to go there) and everyone suggested iv, put to sleep and your done.

We have been to the oral surgeon before (my dd, ds and dh) - he is the best. My dd said I don't do needles. He was nice and explained the two options and said you don't need iv - she can handle the local sine she has had so much done in her mouth over the years (chin cup, jaw extender, four baby teeth pulled, braces, etc.) - he said it's not necessary - iv was not used years ago and many suggest it because it's more money. She said good - no iv.

She then went on to say - oh my friend told me you give Vicadin (sp?) for pain - I don't do pills either (still can't swallow them) - he said - no problem many people have jaw surgery, etc. - how do you think they take pain medication? Liquid so liquid it was for pain.

Good luck whatever you decide - let us know how you do.

I had 17 teeth pulled a few years ago, incl. 4 wisdom teeth.
Fully asleep though at the hospital.

1,5 years later my teeth needed to be cleaned, and taken care off, and they did that using an IV, which would knock me out a little, they said I would still be awake, that if something would hurt I could still be able to say so.
Well, they knew I was troubles from the beginning and gave me enough through the IV to completely knock me out.

I woke up during though, I had to sneeze, lol.
They immidiatly putted some more into the IV and I was gone again in 5 seconds.

I'm scared to death for dentists, this IV thing helped a lot.
I did cry when they putted it in my arm, and kind of crushed my dad's hand, haha, but that's just all the stress coming out in tears really.
And you don't need to be put fully asleep in a hospital, you are still breathing on your own which is good, you don't feel anything.

I need to go and do it again, but I can't find the courage to pick up the phone and make the appointment :/

I'm not sure I would wanna use the laugh gas, does it knock you out too? Or do you pretty much just stay awake?

If you are really that scared, I'd ask about an IV.
It did wonders for me, and I know once I'll have the courage to make a new appointment for a treatment I'll be so happy it's over with again.

Exactly why I don't want anesthesia. I am terrified of it. I cried for a whole week before my foot surgery because I was so scared, I knew I had no choice on that tho, it needed to be done. I am going to see if they soothe conscious sedation or laughing gas. Really don't want to be put to sleep.

I am glad your daughter is okay.

well i'm home. today was a long day.

they only took the 1 tooth out and I just had local anesthesia. I am home now relaxing. Took all my meds. Had soup, stars that I didn't have to chew and pudding.

Very tired, going to take a nap. Thanks for all the help and advice.
