My first DCL cruise was with my high school graduating class. Nothing too memorable, but to just be there, with no parents, was pretty fun!
This last one, as a college graduation gift (in our family.. you graduate.. you get a cruise!), was with my parents and grandparents. It is fun when you have age ranges from 73 to 23 all there, having fun together. Some of the best memories were after shopping in St. Maarten, we ate lunch on the ship, and my parents and I did an excursion, while my grandparents explored the ship. Well, we were running a little late coming back, and my grandparents were on deck 10, and we were running toward the ship, and we had a conversation from 10 decks away! It was way fun!
Another was when we went to see Twice Charmed, we got the first row in the second section. We have a lot of short people in our group, so this helped alleviate the heads in the way. Well, there were a few seats next to us reserved. Turns out, this special needs boy and his family got to sit there. This boy, Andy, was fascinated by ships, and he went on the bridge tour, and met Captain Tom and everything. Captain Tom was the one who arranged his "special seats". We spoke with the family, found out they were from Canada, and that he works with the Native Indians there. It was very interesting. Anyway, during the entire show, Andy was just amazed. Made me so happy to see him! We saw Andy and his father often on the ship, and we always stopped to talk to each other.
Now, mother and I spent a lot of time at Treasure Katch, because, well, we love jewelry! Cameron, the manager of the store, always saw us and helped us, showing us things (even those not on display
). He was just so great and wonderful. The day we docked in Port, he was going back to Australia. He made shopping more fun than it should be!
A member of the cruise staff, Charley, was the funnest guy ever! He hosted a Disney Music Trivia Contest in the Promenade Lounge. He couldn't find the music (haha) and so the piano player for the lounge played some of the music (by memeory!) Well, I ended up winning the contest with a perfect score (you had to know the exact title of the song, and where it came from). I got a medal and a very nice travel mug. Charly asked my name and everything. We would see him around, and he always remembered my name. On the last evening, during the dance party, he talked with me, at length, about a friend who lives near us. Where else can you vacation, where someone who comes in contact with, literally, the entire cruise ship, and still remember your name, and where you live?
Also, our servers, Sammy and Rodie, were the best. Sammy had the best sense of humor. The first night, my grandfather ordered a dessert, and my grandmother said, "Me too!" Well, that apparently was the wrong thing to say, as when the desserts came out, my grandmother received a plate with "me too" written in chocolate syrup! How funny that was! She was 73 and they still did magical things for her. Of course he had the dessert waiting, but it was still great. Sammy and Rodie and our head waiter brought out a cake for my graduation on our last night. It was a gorgeous cake! It was also the best cake ever! They even brought out a congrats pin too. They announced to everyone that I graduated college and was a nurse! He then put icing on my nose! hehe, that was great. Here is a pic of my cake!
That was the best trip ever. The service on the ship is what is making us go back in June (just booked!) for a 4 day double dip. Other places, you can't feel that special. The CMs on the ship literally make you feel as if you are the only guest on the ship.
The absolute best memory was my last night on the ship. We had a little deluxe oceanview statroom on deck 2 and were very close to the water. I literally sat on my little fold out bed for HOURS watching the waves. I loved watching where the ship broke through the calm water, making it turn white. I would watch one piece of white ocean until I couldn't see it anymore. That, right there, was my favorite moment. In the darkness of my room, hearing the little creaks that lulled me to sleep every night like an old rocking chair. I had never had such calmness in my life.
I can't wait to go back in June! I might miss my little ocean view, but we have a navigator's verandah!
