What Sights can you see leaving and returning to NYC harbour

Thanks, MJ - get me misty.

That guy in the first photo - I take it that it's a soda pop in that yellow cup <GRIN>.

Folks sailing out this year will be able to see the new One World Trade Center, which will be close to topped out by the time the MAGIC is sailing here.

Looking forward to greeting the MAGIC as she sails in on May 25. If a meet group forms, I'll be the one in the (much) smaller blue-hulled boat shadowing the MAGIC as she comes upriver!!

Ally, if you look at the last photo MJ posted in Post#15, on the far right side you can just see the Brooklyn Bridge. So, from the port side as you are leaving, as you pass the lower tip of Manhattan, and you look behind and upriver on the East River, that's where you'll see it.

Other sights would be Governor's Island, also to your port just afterpassing below Manhattan's southern tip, which is also just as you are coming up on the Statue of Liberty. As you pass through this area, it is an extremely busy working harbor - take note of the almost balletic movements of all the vessels - there's ferries large and small and high speed. There are tugs, with and without barges. There's pleasure craft, also large and small, power and sail, even the occasional (out of their mind, IMHO) kayakers. And then there will be you, on a gorgeous cruise ship.
Lastly, after you've passed under the Verazzano-Narrows Bridge, you will be in Lower New York Harbor. There will be plenty of barges on moorings, awaiting their pickup by tugboats. To the starboard side, you will see the high banks of the Atlantic Highlands of New Jersey. Below them, you will see the curve of Sandy Hook. At that time, to port side, with a decent pair of binoculars, you can see Coney Island, and should be able to pick out the distinctive shape of the old parachute drop tower there. Then, you'll continue out into the open water of the Atlantic Ocean. Wow, it never get's old!

And Ally, I'll be expecting some descriptive help for my 2013 visit to Scotland! Are you at all familiar with the Caledonian Canal? We expect to be travelling there next year.

Having grown up in NJ, and traveling across the Varrazano Bridge frequently to see my grandparents on LI, I am so excited to see the bridge "from the other side."

While Lady Liberty will be closed while we are there, you can get tickets for the ferry that takes you to Ellis Island, and to Lady Liberty from either the New York side, or the New Jersey side. Being a Jersey Girl, I am partial to
going from NJ, since Lady Liberty is actually IN NJ, not NY!

My prom was held at a place in the Atlantic Highlands, I wonder if I will be able to see it while we sail. Again, different angle :goodvibes

It was alway fun to see Coney Island driving along the Souther State Parkway on Long Island, so it will be cool to see it from "the other side" on the ship!

It is going to be fun to sail out on a ship, looking at NYC, passing Lady Liberty, going under the bridge...all the things I have only done from the shore growing up. And on my favorite ship in the world.:woohoo:

Yes the canal for me is the one of the most beautiful sights in Scotland and forgive me for being biased but I think in the whole of Britain because although it great when the weather is fine it also has some character to it when it is grey and raining as long as there is no mist. As you seem to be a water man I think you will know what I mean. It is like a good black and whte photo. There is a lot of activity at the Inverness end with Jacobite cruise trips going down the Canal However once you head down through the canal and into Loch Ness it is much more peaceful. Watch out for the monster. We have not done this trip since the kids were young but on a nice sunny day which we had a lot more of then we used to go down one side of Loch Ness to I think it was Spean Bridge where the Statue is of the Commandos is and come back up the Loch on the other side by car. Loch Lomond which again is beautiful. On the banks of Loch Lomond you have the villages of Luss and Balloch. The west coast of Scotland is the most beautiful I think. I could go on all day. Another route we have take by car when we stayed with friends in Glasgow is to head in the direction of Inverary where you have the Castle etc and you will get some great views. On the way there you will drive right by the banks of Loch Lomond and later you have to make a stop at a viewpoint called Rest and be Thankful, which I think is an amazing view, then continue to drive on to the banks of Loch Fyne all the way into Inverary. Loch Fyne is where you get the world famous kippers ( smoked herring), an absoulute treat with a great smell if eaten al fresco with New Potatoes with a knob of butter washed down with a nice cold Pino Grigio, or a Chardonny. Anyway if I go on I won't know when stop as there are so many Lochs and Glens in Scotland. In fact you have just put me in the mood to do the trip myself. Remember though before you come to Scotland , practice your pronunciation of Loch not LOCK. The LH comes from the back of your throat like if you are going to gargle with water.

Funny how people always say it's in NY.

Yet, we do get noted for "Jersey Shore" despite that they're all from NY. :sad2:
