Kimmel Cancelled......... Terrifying Not Funny!

Disney did not fire Kimmel from working with ABC.

His show was suspended because the vast majority of local affiliates who are owned by Sinclair and Nexstar preemptively said they would not be airing his show. Nexstar has that multi-billion merger they want to get through the FCC.
Maybe Disney the brand everyone knows should point out that our "Media Conglomerates " are actually more powerful than them! Even more terrifying because we all believe "Disney"cares.

What a time this controversy is happening… I’m sure this will likely get discussed so much in my class tomorrow… I am taking a major in media studies btw.

Exactly. Not fired, but sidelined. They have determined at this point they will lose less money paying him to sit at home than it would cost them to produce the show for a much smaller possible audience.

It is a business decision.

This is probably true, though they do need to make a statement. The silence is a bad look.

Honestly, he didn't even say anything that bad, but some people have been looking for an excuse. They muscled out Colbert too, and they won't stop here either.

They got to get the affiliates back on board before they make any statements. The amount of affiliates they currently have lost make producing the show not economically viable. That is a problem Kimmel will have to figure out how to fix if he wants to do more than sit at home and collect his paycheck.

It doesn’t matter if we think think his comments were or weren’t offensive. It matters how Nextstar and Sinclair feel.

Jimmy Kimmel stopped being funny awhile ago.

Frankly, I'm just sick and tired of so many late night 'comedy' shows talking about politics all of the time. Really sick of it. It's the biggest reason I don't watch any of them anymore. Tired of the moral grandstanding. Maybe try actually being funny again for once.

It is easy for people on the right to say Disney should have took a stand for Carano and easy for people on the left to say they should have took a stand for Kimmel. It is easy for them to say that because it isn’t their money and their job on the line.

Already seeing people calling for Disney boycotts which SUCKS. I do not blame them. This is insane.

Well, I do hope not. I have read that it is believed that this is not permanent and that he will be back. Disney may be trying to smooth things over with Nexstar first, though that's just speculation. We will see I guess. The whole thing is just so crazy though - I am shocked to be living in these times.

But, it is our money. If Kimmel isn't back, I'm selling my Disney stocks. I won't stand by Disney's decision of this.

But isn’t it great to have a CHOICE of what to watch? Or who to listen to? You don’t have to tune in! That’s the beauty of it.

Like for me, I don’t watch FOX news where the commentator advocated for lethally injection for homeless people. Yet it seems like those first amendment rights are perfectly in tact.

The countries where you can’t mock our leaders or keep them in check are not the countries you want to live in.
We are heading toward state run TV.

They're obsessed with politics and they're grating to watch. They've lost nearly all cultural impact because they only speak to a small and aging percent of the population. There have been articles like the following for years highlighting the audience issues that late-night shows have had (and this first article speculated that Kimmel would be the first to go, just because of ratings and a blassé show):

https://movieweb.com/why-late-night-tv-is-failing/
https://www.theringer.com/podcasts/...late-night-tv-is-an-omen-for-american-culture

The ratings for late night have gone down pretty much every year. His [Colbert's] show has held up better than some, in part because the audience is so old. But you think about from when he started to now, it’s lost at least a third of its audience

There have been major issues for this format for a long time, and they haven't seemed keen on freshening up the shows. And with Colbert, they just decided to cancel the show entirely rather than trying with a new host and some fresh blood?

Same thing is basically happening here with Kimmel at this point. His firing was political but also a relief for $DIS who was likely moving in the same direction as CBS with Colbert.

If you don't find him funny, change the channel! There is a difference between comedy and comedic satire. Clearly you are a fan of the first, not the second. Change the channel, don't silence the comedian in violation of the Constitution.

It doesn't matter if you like Kimmel or not
He has the right to say what he likes he shouldn't lose a job over it.

Well, ther are limits of course - not for the government to decide, but rather his employers. However he didn't say anything different the other night than he has been saying for years and years, and the show has remained on the air. Everyone was fine with it until, suddenly they weren't. Nexstar is seizing the opportunity to court favor with the government for another merger, which has been shown to work with this administration. It really has nothing to do with what he said, they just seized on an opportunity.
