I just had a shocking buy pleasant surprise at the front door. I heard our gate opening, so I peeked out the window, and saw four people walking up my front steps. It was dark so I couldn't really see who it was. They rang the bell. I told my brother we had four people at the front door, and I went down to let them in.
It was three of my cousins and their step sister. Now, that may not seem like a big deal, but these are my long lost cousins. Due to a divorce between my uncle and their mother over 35 years ago, I didn't know them for much of my life (to make a long story short, my uncle gave up custody of the kids to their mom's second wife).
I always knew I had three more cousins in my family, but no one had any contact with them. I finally got to meet one of them about three years ago when my uncle's daughter from his second marriage got married out in Vegas. I met the second one a few months later.
But my third cousin, my cousin Bob, wanted nothing to do with the family, and had no interest in meeting us. I met him very briefly two years ago at his mother's memorial service (it was basically just a handshake and an "I'm sorry for your loss"--I don't even know if he knew who he was).
So, seeing him standing at my front door with his sisters was quite a shock! We have the same birthday (which is coming up later this month), so we joked about that. We shook hands when he arrived, and hugged when he left.
So it was a big step for him to make, but I hope it is a small step in an effort to bring him back into our family.
Thanks for listening. I'm just so excited about this that I'm shaking
