Vacation time is too short and Disney prices are too high to waste on bad food. We did not have any great food on our recent trip, but here are a few "heads up"s to avoid any surprises...

Dole Whip in Adventureland, MK:
I tried it because so many ppl here said it was great, and it does taste great imo. Just be aware it melts almost immediately (saw a woman lose one!), and basically you are paying almost $3 for a cup of air. There is a huge air gap in the middle of the skimpy coil of soft serve, and when I asked, the CM told me it is supposed to be like that!

Artist Point at the Wilderness Lodge:
This is a very expensive restaurant that is supposed to be top notch. The decor is beautiful. But as a "foodie" I can tell you the food does not deliver as promised. I won't go into detail, but the two signature dishes, the cedar plank salmon and the buffalo steak, did not come out smoking hot, and we couldn't even tell if they use their smokehouse any more. The hash for the salmon was terrible, and the strawberry salad had rotten strawberries and bad flavor. The only part of the desserts that was good was the sorbet/ice cream.

The worst part was that the salmon was raw even after sending it back to be cooked, and instead of admitting that the true test of a chef is to be able to perfectly cook a piece of fish, they made an excuse that it was "sushi grade" salmon. I did not order warm sushi, and know they do it that was to cover the fact they cannot cook it properly every time. Better to leave it uncooked when you have uneven chef abilities, they probably thought.

The menu was also a mishmash of spring and summer items along with deep winter root veggies. They had an excuse for that too, which was that they were serving things from the Pacific Northwest, but hello, any menu planner worth their salt would know the produce should also be fresh and seasonal. I heard a server misinform diners as to what was in the mashed root veggies, btw. The only good side we tried was the sweet potatoes that came with the buffalo steak.

I ordered the ridiculously expensive wine flight and got extremely skimpy pours as well as pressure from the server to try things I knew I wouldn't like. Once he tricked me by bringing what he recommended instead of what I ordered, which soured my palate and ruined the rest of the wine from the first glass when I went back to it.

When I tried to talk to a manager about all this, all I got were excuses and an invitation to try the restaurant again at our own expense. As if we would ever pay that much money for such bad food again, hah! They are not serving anything better than you can get at the lower priced places (which is not saying a lot, since WDW restaurant quality has gone downhill overall with the advent of those dining plans and free dining and leasing out a lot of their restaurants.)

I do not need to hear replies about how you liked it. If you did, start your own thread. This is my experience to serve as a warning to others.

Yak & Yeti at AK:
The menu looked good. It is always full when we try to make a ressie, and I found that is because they keep half the tables for walk-ins. We waited in line at 11am to get in.

At first I was pleased by the food (although the specialty Yak Attack drink was too expensive for something that did not taste as though it had any rum in it whatsoever). Then I got a huge bent staple in my stir fry! (Thank God I chew slowly; DH would have swallowed it without thinking!) The waitress said it happens a lot (!) because the veggies come in bags. Funnily, almost immediately a manager came up and whisked away the plate, to "show the chef," conveniently leaving no evidence. She tried to give us 20% off the entree, but if something like that happens in real life, the restaurant will comp your entire bill. When I said that, she went back and returned saying she would comp the entree. It began to feel like buying a car with all the back and forth and long waits.

So then we tried to pay for the rest using our DVC perk discount, only to be informed that Landry restaurants like Y&Y and Rainforest Cafe only do the discount off the entree, not the whole bill (so it didn't apply to us because our entree had been comped), and only for the first four entrees, even though that is NOT what the perks book says. The next manager came out and claimed Disney is aware of their policies, but I think Disney would know better than to print false claims as this has been going on for a long time.
I was also rather shocked that they were so blase about the staple in the food, as someone could have shredded their mouth, choked, punched a hole in their intestines, or other dire consequences from that - and to know it goes on regularly without their having tried to change their procedures was quite chilling.

You have now been warned. Dine at your own risk.

I'll make a few comments since no one else seems willing. You call yourself a "foodie" but show, according to your own comments, rather childlike skills in dealing with two unacceptable dining experiences. For example:

For someone from Sonoma County, one would think you'd have a better understanding of wine than to let a server "trick" you into something you didn't want. As a grown adult, you should consider being a little more in charge of yourself and your decisions.

Why did you accept what they offered? You should have said, "We're not leaving until you comp our entire meal." Take down everyone's name, including the head chef, and threaten to contact Corporate. Trust me, they would have given you anything you wanted. That you failed to do this once again negates your being a "foodie" and basically ensured you got what you deserved. Remember, only poor customers received poor customer service. Good customers never allow themselves to be taken advantage of or crossed in any way. Maybe you learned your lesson?

Statements like these are as arrogant as anything I just wrote to you in response. Most DIS posters are not argumentative by nature, but your two disappointing meals are nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands of great meals had by others. If you're so disappointed with the quality of WDW restaurants, maybe you should stop visiting the happiest place on earth and let the rest of us enjoy it that much more in your absence. :)

Pixie Dust...thank you putting in the effort to write about your experiences. Sorry you had such a time of it.

To The Mews: only one comment about your comments: OW!

We loved everything about Yak & Yeti. We had 4:45 reservations and were seated promptly, every table was filled, service was excellent and the food was the second best meal of our entire trip.

To The Mews:

While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I would recommend you consider simply moving on to another thread if you feel so negative about another's post. Your comments came across as rude and insulting. Whatever your intention, make sure you're aware of how others may view what you've said. These boards are not the place to put other people down.

I will usually give a restaurant a second chance if the first chance was terrible. I can cite an example of being served rancid milk for my cereal during my 1996 trip at a breakfast at Yacht Club Galley. But I have been back various times since then, and I haven't had a bad experience since. (My last visit being just before it became Captain's Grill.)

And it's also possible to get the worst food on a night where others are getting the best food. Our dinner at Kona on my last trip serves as another good example. My mother originally ordered the most bland whitefish, Ono. She was so extremely dissatisfied with it that I "forced" her to get what she originally was going to get: Pomegranate-glazed pork chop. The pork chop was as fabulous as the Ono was blah. She would have thought Kona was horrible had she not gotten a replacement for her meal.

I think the situation over the wine was probably at least in part your fault for not insisting on the wine you wanted to get. And I think the Landry's people handled your situation poorly. I do think you should write to Landry's about it, but seriously change the tone of it to remove all emotional aspects.

I don't care if you don't want to hear about our experiences at your restaurants, because I'm too opinionated not to share!

I thought the food and service at Artist Point last October was fantastic. I don't always think it should rank as "signature dining", but I think it ranks high enough for me to have had good meals there for years.

If you post on these forums, be prepared for other people's opinions. Just because you don't like what I have to say or how I said it, doesn't mean I'm incorrect. Pixie Dust chose to put their opinions up for public view. If they didn't want a response, they should have kept their opinions to themselves. But for them to come across as they did gave me every right to respond the way I did. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, and everyone's opinion is correct... Pixie Dust's and mine included. ;)

At least Pixie Dust posted under her name....I am guessing you didn't just sign up to the DIS and this was the first thread you came across. Having been on the DIS for awhile now I am always suspicious of posters who first posts are controversial or rude.

Pixie Dust...sorry about your bad experiences. I love WDW and 95% of the meals we have had there have been great but sometimes things go wrong in the kitchen , it happens everywhere unfortunately.

What a rude and unneccessary post.:sad2:

To the OP, thank you for your honest thoughts.:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't salmon served medium generally? I'm not a salmon fan, but I've been dining with someone and they were asked how they would like their salmon. The server actually said "This dish is usually prepared medium, how would you like it prepared?" That could explain the fish at Artist Point.

I'm sorry you had such poor dining experiences during your WDW trip. Thank you for giving your opinion.

I applaud Mews for approaching his response in a very busines-like, respectful manner. Instead of just saying something like "you are stupid" or "you are not a foodie at all, you big poser" he coutnered a few of the OP's points about his so-called "warnings".

And anyway, food at Disney is not the best of the best. It is on par with what you get at chain restaurants. Why everyone expects more and gushes on and on about the faboo food at Disney totally escapes me. If I wanted to go on a culinary adventure, there are a hundred better places to go than Disney. I pity those who say their Disney vacations are all about the food.

Pity me, then. I planned my trip around the food and wine festival.

I love reading the reviews of the restaurants at Disney; the good, the bad, the ugly. I love how some people love it all, and others seem to hate it all. It's entertaining... and has zero impact on where I dine at Disney.

For me, Disney dining is all about the experience--I really don't expect the food to be that great. If it's on par with Chili's on a good day, I'm okay. It's an amusement park. If I wanted great culinary experiences I would look elsewhere. Having said that, my personal bugaboo is that I can not abide lousy service. (Don't blow my bliss, Disney CM's. ;) )

So thanks, Pixie Dust, for the dire warnings, but I'm still gonna do what I'm gonna do. However, I'll do it knowing I WAS WARNED.

Psst Pixie Dust....how this BB thingie works is people start threads and other people reply. If you don't like that, then, hey! here's an idea! become PixieDust: Dictator of the Whole Big Wide World :worship: and issue an edict that anyone that disobeys your rules of no disagreement allowed! shall be summarily executed. Just be warned: I, Jack's GeeMa, will immediately begin asking for aid from the United States to throw a little coup in your honor. Let Freedom Ring! Unalienable rights like posting and eating at lousy restaurants! for all the huddled masses! Down with censorship! Pixie Dust:  You're okay.

As an aside, RebelMom, I love your signature. Awesome. :thumbsup2

I have never had a desire to try a Dole Whip, and there is nothing that entices me to try Yak & Yeti on the menu.

We, on the other hand had the MOST AMAZING meal at Artist Point two weeks ago. (See my review: Madame, the duck? for details) Our server, while made suggestions, was not pushy, and let us try several wines before ordering a bottle. She did however reccomend that we NOT get the salmon. There were only a few times a year that she thought that it was worth the price, and September wasn't one of them. I found her honesty refreshing. I'm truly sorry that you didn't have the same luck we had. we enjoyed our evening even more than our dinner at California Grill.

I hope you'll give it another try. Ask for Stephanie, as a chef, and a foodie, I have to say, she is phenomenal!

Frankly, I disagree with the OP asking others not to respond. This IS the place for other people to voice their opinions. This isn't the OP's thread, and others have every right to share their own experiences at the restaurant.

And I don't disagree with the points you made. It was the manner in which you made your comments that was uncalled for. Your comments had little to do with your own experiences and seemed to me to be a condescending attack of the OP.

Perhaps you were incredibly put off by the OP's final comment - about not wanting to hear others' opinions and that those who disagree should start their own thread. Granted, it's not the most mature comment I've ever seen. Maybe that set you off--so much so that your very first post on the DIS was so negative and belittling. I also disagreed with the OP's last comment, but rather than politely offering suggestions as to how the situations could have been better handled, your post called them childlike and suggested they stop visiting WDW. To me, that comment was even more childlike.

I'm going to move along myself, as I don't feel the rest of the DIS want to spend any more time reading about all this nonsense, but if you feel the need, I'd be happy to discuss this further with you :)

darn, i thought those staples were part of the stir fry at y&y, could of had a free entree.
