Do you tip in Paris and or Disney when you have a meal? Some people have said that there is no tipping in Europe but I want to make sure before I do something that isn't right. If so how much of a percent do you tip.

You don't tip, you can round up to the next € if you like or leave a couple of €s if you are a larger group or have had exceptional service.

We pay 12% service charge and 7% vat already, this is included in the prices on the menus

For example we went out for lunch today and it was 45,25€, I left 46€. The tables around us, all French, left small change or nothing at all.

:goodvibes

I never knew about the service charge!

We've been visiting DLP for the last 10 years, and in restaurants I normally leave around a €10 for the two of us

Now I know it's not expected i'll just be rounding up to the nearest couple of €'s unless I have exceptional service.

What have others tipped in the past?

:scared1: Until July 2009 the vat was 19.60%

and I've just been informed that it's now 15% service charge and not 12% so you are at 20,50% all in :)

The following is accurate for me

Almost all restaurant, cafés and bars include 15% service charge (“service compris”) in their prices. If you are particularly pleased with the service it is customary to leave a little extra change for the waiter.
€0.15 to 0.20 for a drink at a café/bar
€0.5 to 1 for a drink at a night club/bar
€1 to €2.50 for a meal in an average restaurant
Up to 5% of the bill for a meal in an exceptional restaurant

thanks again Carrie_Cat, very useful information :).

I didn't know this either. Not that we're massive tippers, but it's good to know and not feel too guilty if we don't have spare euros to leave. Of course if the staff are good we always leave something.

Oops... I didn't realize it was that different to Germany. Here it's very much common to tip at least 2 Euro or so for a table service meal.

I left our server at Auberge 5 in fall (he had really been on the ball helping with pictures and everything) and he looked at me like I had two heads. Now that explains things. :rolleyes1

Ahh, that explains it. I'd always read that it should be automatically included in France but when we never saw it added at the bottom of the bill we thought it wasn't - it didn't occur to me that it would be added into the actual price of each item. No wonder the CMs ask us when we leave if we're coming back again :lmao: although we normally give €10 which works out right for 5 of us.

Thank you! :goodvibes

If you look at the menus that I just took at KLC

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1262285&page=3

you can see at the bottom it says Prix net services compris -tax included

All menus and price lists in cafes and restaurants should have this mention somewhere

It is also printed on the receipt. I 've one here and it says Prix service compris and it gives me the detail of the tva (vat) at 19.6% - that's on drink and 7% on food

I have 15% service built into the total amount of 33.30 = 4.99€ and then there is 1.13€ tva 19.6% included in the wine at 6.90€ and 1.73€ tva 7% included in the food at 26.40

So I've "left" 7,85€ before leaving the restaurant and giving a pourboire (translating to "for drinking") which is the French word for tip is not necessary

Many, many years ago you used to see service non compris on receipts and then we'd leave around 12% which was the service amount at the time if we thought that it was deserved.

Now it's exceptional to find a restaurant where it's not included and in DLP like in tourist Paris it's always going to be there already in the prices :goodvibes

It's a couple of €s for the whole table not per person ! ;) The CMs must think you are fab :lmao:

I'll never forget when we had drinks in the DLH bar & left the change which was about €6 as a tip, the server came running along the corridor with it till we said keep it. She was very attentive & deserved to keep it.

At DLP we only tend to tip at Walt's and California Grill, as they're the only two restaurants where we have received very good/exceptional service.

LOL!!! :lmao: I read it as per person - oh my, just think of the extra euros I will have to spend on cocktails this summer!! :rotfl2:

I believe tipping in europe is not the same as in the us. I live in Holland and there are no rules actually. Servers get a full salary without the tips. It's just an extra. We went to Disneyland Paris 3 times last year and we would round up amounts. Sometimes we gave 8 euro's but sometimes 12 for the two of us. It all depends on the amount of the bill. If it's €92 we will make it €100 for example.

It's also not normal to tip the women that cleanse your room. I think she even wouldnt take your money if you left a couple of Euro's waiting for her on your room. She will prob. think that you forget to take that money.

Iv'e been to france more than 3 times and i have noticed that french people tend to pay the bill first and then leave some change on the table. But in Disneyland people are mostly generous on tips but only at table service restaurants. If you dont get service there is no tipping here. So counter service is not being tipped. Buffets are but way less than table service.
