The Running Thread--2024

@Disney at Heart just south of Savannah in Richmond Hill.
Great! Family is still in Glennville. And I always stop in at Richmond Hill Love’s for gas, restroom, and a mocha latte at McDonald’s whenever I pass through to Disney World on I-95! You need to come to a meetup (early mornings, Hurricane Hannah’s, or DATW) so we can actually “meet up”!

Oh awesome! And yes, will do!!

Attention NewBalance runners! I got an email about a new program for returned/refurbished NB shoes: https://newbalancereconsidered.com/

It appears to be legit, with stock coming from folks who did the 30-day trial and decided not to keep the product or their trade-in program. There are some pretty good deals -- like new 1080s for 33% off, for example. There is also info on the trade-in option that gives you credit for your old shoes.

ATTQOTD: I run after work and before dinner, so that's usually starting the run at 6pm, give or take an hour depending on the current day's schedule. On the weekends, I calculate out the timing so that I can finish and be ready to eat dinner with my husband at 6pm because we only eat together on Fri/Sat/Sun.

I do strength training, foam rolling, and stretching on weekday mornings before work. I like the sunrise vibe, so I wish I could run then, but the running (and clean up) take longer than the strength training, so I'd have to get up even earlier. Also, I have found in the last year or so that I'm realllllly stiff for running in the morning and so when I do have that opportunity, it no longer goes as well as it used to.

Wondering if anyone has experienced this with their Garmin and have found a work around. I'm about to throw this stupid thing in the garbage.

I had a workout scheduled for today - 800m, 1600m, 800m at 5k pace intervals. Since it's late, I modified it to be time based instead since I'd be on the tread. Problem is, even though the workout is updated, and my phone says it's synced with my watch, my watch doesn't even think this workout exists anymore. It has also just stopped opening the calendar all together.
It's the second time this has happened. I fought with the stupid thing both times for about half an hour before getting really frustrated and giving up.

I've tried turning the watch on and off a few times. Force closing the Garmin Connect app multiple times. I don't even know at this point how many times I've synced it. Nothing works.

After a lot of fighting, I realized that by removing the workout from today, and rescheduling it for tomorrow, it somehow fixes the problem. But still, why? When it was scheduled for today, the calendar wouldn't even open up. Now that I rescheduled it for tomorrow, somehow everything is fixed?

I haven't seen this before, but ... I wonder if it's a timezone issue. Like maybe the watch thinks it's already tomorrow and therefore you already missed your scheduled workout.

Restarting the watch and force closing the app will update the session but may not fix a more systemic problem. You might need to do a full reset on the watch and maybe also uninstall the app, reboot your phone, and reinstall the app, then finally sync again. It may lose some settings initially, but if nothing else is working it's worth a shot. Not sure what watch you have, but here is some info on different types of resets: https://support.garmin.com/en-MY/?faq=wxPmdnWsev1xGRUf58oDC8

i was having an issue with my watch syncing some months back and what finally fixed it was adding a dummy workout in the future to be removed later. It was like the watch didn't know there was anything new to sync until I made a new workout and added it to my calendar. It sounds like you ran into something similar. Not really sure how I got into that state, but it sounds like adding something to the calendar fixes it.

I can't say enough good things about Garmin's support when I've had issues with my watch. Someone recommended contacting them about an issue and, even through my watch is quite a few years old, they were willing to work with me to troubleshoot the problem and fix it. So that is another option.

So it didn’t end the way I planned it, I’m still thrilled.
Why?

1 - I finished another marathon!
2 - it was a struggle but I managed to keep a sub 4 streak with a finish of 3:58:20!
3 - I got to meet new people and enjoy post race beers and food
4 - it’s a good long run complete with 5 weeks until the next 26.2
First, congratulations on finishing another marathon. And second, I love this kind of mentality. It's easy to beat ourselves up if a race doesn't go according to plans or if something goes awry at some point and means that in reach goals will not happen. While it's important to look at what didn't go according to plan and learn from it, I think our mental health will be better long term as we focus on what did go right, implement what we learned, and not berate ourselves for what didn't happen according to plan.
Well I wasn't that interested until Wall-e popped up. I'm going to have to do that one at least!
If this was a split challenge, I may well sign up for that one. I actually got to see WALL-E at Pixar about a week or two before it was in theaters. So I always have a soft spot for that film.

ATTQOTD: I run after work. I'm a night owl and just cannot bring myself to wake up early enough to go running unless it's an absolute necessity. Which usually means races.

Hate to brag, but I’m retired and I run whenever I want to! Actually, that means right about sunrise in the summer, and I get to sleep a little later in the morning each day as the sun comes up later. By mid-winter, if it is cold, I can wail until 9-10 am after the sun is up and my world is warming up or even in the afternoon if it’s too cold. I NEVER feel like running late in the evening or at night.

The end of another month already.
Happy with this one, had a vacation, taper, marathon, and 5 days off to recover. Less runs but longer to keep my 100/month streak. Went out this AM to add 5 miles but instead added 5K after my body said nope, I’m not quite recovered yet. Taking it easy this weekend and hoping to get back at it in September, Clarence DeMar marathon is only 29 days away.

I am fortunate enough to be in the same boat, I still like getting up early, but I really enjoy the ability to reschedule my long runs to just about whenever if necessary.

16 mile long run 4 weeks ago flared up a meniscus tear. Orthopedic gave me a cortisone shot, prednisone, and anti inflammatory, patted me on the rump and encouraged me to keep on running until I die. 😍 Pain was unbearable unfortunately and shifted to spinning and strength training the last two weeks. Feeling great now! Maybe give it a week or two and return to running to train for Wine and Dine and Marathon Weeknd.

48.4 miles for August. About 10 of those on the injury. Fully pulling the plug on the half. Trying to rehab and then focus goes into my next official race, a 5k in February. Hoping it’s better in time to do castaway cay 5k in November.

I did finally go and do parent/child Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with my daughter today and had a lot of fun. Don’t think I’ll do it every week while my hip is healing, but it was still fun.

I’m focusing on nutrition and continuing getting my weight down. I’m in the mid 250s now. I need to look at POT deadline for the Halloween half at dl for next year. If things heal and my eight goes down, I would like to shoot for a PR there, but that is a big cart before horse atm.

August Running:
Total Distance: 81.5 mi
Average Pace: 11:12/mi

This includes a week on vacation. I did run that week, but not as much as was on my schedule.

About a year ago, I was coming off a year or two of just a string of PRs and feeling more and more fit with every race (thank you Billy). But I was also feeling pretty burned out mentally and I made the conscious decision to cut back on any speedwork other than race pace tempo runs in prep for Chicago 2023. Then I got injured (ITB irritation really) leading up to that race, and cut out speedwork even more. The past 12 months have made the lowest mileage year I've had in years, and that combined with a lack of speedwork means I've been getting slower and slower. Which I said I'd be fine with, but now I'm really not. So I dusted off my last DopeyBadger marathon plan, and I'm getting more serious in training for the WDW Marathon this January. Happy to say today was the first time my Garmin has called my workout Productive in a very long time and I'm excited to get back on track.

Also trying to build on the little bit of strength training I'd been doing, or at the very least keep it going steady as the mileage goes up for the marathon. I can't believe it but just taking a week or 2 off around vacation meant a super-sore pair of quads for the 3 days after my first workout back. Lesson learned: Don't take weeks off of strength training and you won't be in this pain when you get back to it.

August totals:
Walking: 7.1mi
Running: 52.1mi

On an unrelated note, does anyone in here take magnesium glycinate supplements? I’ve been having a lot of general achiness in my lower legs for the past couple of months and was trying to explain it away with aging shoes that are nearing their mileage limit for me. But my legs are starting to wake me up at night.
