The Running Thread--2024

I'm a runner and a Disney fan. I've run Disney races & loved them. Couldn't get a spot in this year's Marathon. I notice that Celebration (the community near DW) has a Marathon 2 weeks later (1/26). https://www.celebrationmarathon.com/ It looks really small & I can't find many reviews online. I know it won't be anything like the massive, highly themed spectacle of a RunDisney race. But it's a time of year when I want to run a marathon & I'll be able to go to the parks after the race & celebrate with rides & Disney dining. Does anyone have experience with this race or know anything about it?
I have friends who live in Celebration and run it every year. I can certainly ask them for more details, but the general feedback I have heard from them is that it is quite friendly and community oriented. They are an active older (65+) couple who are regular runners if that helps. It does sound like it is mostly folks who live in Celebration and a lot of past + present CMs participate as well.

My mom and step-dad just bought a place there, so if I hear any more details I'll happily post.

Kelly from Young At the Parks did the Celebration Marathon a few years ago. IIRC, she enjoyed it but said parts of it were somewhat chaotic, including the finishing area. I think it was relatively new when she did it, so they might have improved logistics since then.

On an unrelated note, does anyone in here take magnesium glycinate supplements?
I do, especially when marathon training. I think it helps with muscle recovery.
Looking for a half near end of April/early May within 4 hours of Indianapolis.
Amway River Bank Run 25K in Grand Rapids is always the second Saturday in May. Unique distance, big race, and there is an official timing split at the half marathon mark.

August mileage: 88.32 2nd highest month of the year behind January when I ran all 7 runDisney races that month.

Up this weekend is all 3 Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon races. Hoping that runDisney Anaheim has worked out the issues from January. There were quite a few different issues that were either poorly thought out or just made no sense.

I haven’t been on the boards in months! We were rear ended by a teen with only her permit and no licensed adult in the car back in May. Did I mention they were underinsured too???? I was injured and it’s been a tough recovery. Thank goodness it’s nothing permanently disabling.

I managed to get 47 miles in for the month of August so I’m super happy about that. I also was able to ride my horses over the weekend. I’m more sore from that than the running 😂

August Running: Activities: 14 Distance: 47.08 mi Time: 8:57:28
This was weeks 9-12 of my 5k training plan. I also did a very mini triathlon during the Olympics for the Garmin badge. I had a few days "break" at Sea World then boarded Disney's Wish for Nassau and the 5k on Castaway Cay. I was definitely nervous before the run. Not sleeping well....
My goals after 12 weeks of training for the 5k were:
Gold - 28:13, Silver: 28:20, Bronze: just finish as an end to the training plan......and I ended up with the Bronze. It took me 29:xx to run. I think I missed a little bit along the way because when I got to the finish line I was only at 3 miles. I continued until I got to 3.11, but I was making a slower loop at the end, trying not to run into people coming off the shuttle.
My husband was running ahead of me, but we didn't discuss a pacing strategy or confirm exactly how close I would have to run to him to meet my goal so that was a fail.
I took a banana from the ship to eat afterwards since the food doesn't open until 11am.
The snorkeling after the run was fun.
I had planned to wear my CC5k medal to dinner on the ship, but decided not to since I didn't really make my goal.
We did 3 days in WDW after the cruise. If I had been home I would have gone on a couple more runs to get up to 50 miles for the month.

Looking ahead to September I will loosely follow the Galloway Marathon training plan w/ my husband for the next 3 weeks, until my Garmin marathon training plan starts.

ETA - The AOTD - On weekdays, I run after lunch, and after a short digestion break. Or I plan my runs around my child's soccer practices and run during that in the evening. On weekends for the long runs I lounge in bed in the morning and start the run around 9-10am. I'm not a morning person.

Thank you. This is very helpful!

August Running
Runs: 15
Miles: 68.3
Time: 11:51:53
Avg HR: 148
Avg Pace: 10:27

August was fine - I think I had two 3-run weeks (instead of typical 4-run weeks) due to vacation and kids' softball schedules. Had a few days of cooler runs, which were much appreciated!

August Walking
Walks: 14
Miles: 13.36
Time: 4:23:24

Walking was fine - dog was happy!

Still need to get back to strength training - I said I would start back up once the kids were in school, but life has still been too busy (ok, I could have found four 30-minute blocks each week but I didn't). We're off for a non-running Disney vacation next week (my first one since 2016!), so running will be down a bit and strength training can start up after we get back.

On an unrelated note, does anyone in here take magnesium glycinate supplements? I’ve been having a lot of general achiness in my lower legs for the past couple of months and was trying to explain it away with aging shoes that are nearing their mileage limit for me. But my legs are starting to wake me up at night.
Can't speak to that supplement. With achy calves, you might try compression sleeves, either 24/7 for awhile or maybe just while you sleep. Also look at hydration.

I hope that you're feeling better. At least you're able to get in 47 miles. You'll be back to your normal running in no time.

I wore compression socks for 2 days and it made it worse at night. Hydration hasn’t been great, but it hasn’t been horrible. Magnesium is supposed to be great for a bunch of other things, so I’m kind of interested for a few reasons.

You could potentially give protein powder a shot? A few years ago I started using whey protein powder, and I think it has really helped with my muscle recovery. I don't go crazy with it like a body builder would, usually just have 1 serving after a run, or my rowing sessions as cross training. In general I focus pretty very heavily on protein, lots of grilled chicken (salads, sandwiches, etc.), so the protein powder is kind of adding on to that.

Did anyone run the Halloween Half at DLR?
I did. It was amazing. This whole weekend is giving WDW a run for their money. I have heard A LOT of logistical complaints, but it’s mostly been people comparing it to WDW. There are still some kinks to be worked out like clearer instructions for the times security opens and the multiple exit points from the reunion area.
