The Running Thread--2024

August totals:
Walking: 7.1mi
Running: 52.1mi

On an unrelated note, does anyone in here take magnesium glycinate supplements? I’ve been having a lot of general achiness in my lower legs for the past couple of months and was trying to explain it away with aging shoes that are nearing their mileage limit for me. But my legs are starting to wake me up at night.

August Totals

Running

Runs: 27
Miles: 200.07
Time: 28:59:17
Avg Pace: 8:42

YTD Miles: 1,405.29
Last 12 months miles: 2,171.45

Ten weeks to go until the Harrisburg Marathon. Training is going well. I get to do a double-digit mileage run before work this coming week. I will also likely need to start using my Noxgear running light this coming week.

This was my eighth month reaching 200 miles. I had to add a little bit on some of my runs this week once I saw I was going to be within a mile of going over the milestone.

o any of you have a Garmin watch that has the option to notify an emergency contact in case of an incident? One of the people I follow on IG, who is training for a triathlon, crashed while out riding his bike and immediately it notified his wife that he had crashed and also sent his location. I am now very interested in this as when I do my bike training, I rode alone. Just wondering how well it works and if you have to also have your phone on you for the notification to work.
Not saying you spoke this into existense, but until the thread earlier this week I didn't know this feature existed. Fast forward to today's long run and I tripped and went down hard only to hear my Garmin buzzing at me. So it turns out it's a buzz and a loud tone similar to something like a weather alert. Lasted about 5 seconds, went silent for another 5 and then came back on again. It then requires you to hold any button for 10 seconds to cancel it. Fortunately I was fine. Ironically the only thing that remains sore is my ribs. I had my phone, which it needs to communicate, in the front of my hydration vest and it jammed into my ribs when I went down. So I can now say (1) yes it has this feature, (2) yes it requires phone to work and (3) yes it seems to work if you are clumsy, trip over warped boards and go down hard while running. :)

I do, mostly for the calming affect and it helps with calcium absorption. I can't do the horse pills so I get chews from Amazon.

Because it's never too early to plan next year's races...

Looking for a half near end of April/early May within 4 hours of Indianapolis. We've already done the Indy Mini and Flying Pig. Has anyone ever done Glass City (Toledo) or Kalamazoo in the spring? Opinions?

August was a little less consistent than I like. It started with a trip up to GenCon in Indy that led to me missing 3 runs. The following week I started having some knee pain that led me to call off a long run. Fortunately, I was able to trace the knee pain to pushing mileage on my shoes a bit too far and it passed quickly. One notable event in August was a glorious cool spell where the T+Ds fell all the way into the 115-125 range! Unfortunately they were right back into the mid-160s a few days later. Talk about whiplash! I'm down to about 6 weeks until my October A race, so fingers crossed nothing crops up in September. Here's my August summary:

August Training Summary
Running Miles: 130.71
Running Time: 24:21:49
Average Pace: 0:11:07/mile
YTD Mileage: 1,140.03 mi

Other
Walking Miles: 17.38
Rolling 12mo Miles: 1,519.80 mi

I would say without hesitation Run the Bluegrass in Lexington which was May 11 this year, except....I received an email a few weeks ago from the Race Director saying he is moving on to other endeavors, so the event may have permanently ended. This would be really sad since it is a consistent top 10 rated HM.

Although short of an HM, the Soldier Field 10 is 10-miler which is well organized, has great swag, and finishes on the field in Soldier Field. It was held May 25th this year so may also be a bit late for you.

August Running:
115 miles in 18:11:51

I got excited seeing all of you signing up for the Princess half at the end of July and started my own half marathon training program. I'm the kind of person who wants to prove that I can do it before a "real" race (even if it's all just for run) so I'll just run a half marathon out my front door around Food and Wine half 2024 day. Not sure what I'll then do for several months, but eventually I'll sign up for Food and Wine half 2025.

Running: 50.5 miles

Walking: 32.7 miles

Strength: 10 workouts

got the Garmin badges for running and walking, including the one to run 26.2 miles during the course of the Olympics.

My goal is 3 strength workouts per week, so I need to do a little more. But overall I’m happy with the month.

Marathon training officially starts tomorrow. I guess i should update my journal, lol.

I haven't done the ones you mentioned but I ran the derby festival half in Louisville years ago and still remember how much fun it was. It'd be worth checking out.

I'm a runner and a Disney fan. I've run Disney races & loved them. Couldn't get a spot in this year's Marathon. I notice that Celebration (the community near DW) has a Marathon 2 weeks later (1/26). https://www.celebrationmarathon.com/ It looks really small & I can't find many reviews online. I know it won't be anything like the massive, highly themed spectacle of a RunDisney race. But it's a time of year when I want to run a marathon & I'll be able to go to the parks after the race & celebrate with rides & Disney dining. Does anyone have experience with this race or know anything about it?

August Totals:
138.8 miles
18 runs

In week 8 of my 18-week marathon training plan for the Every Women's Marathon in Savannah in November, using and loving the Runna App. This will be my first marathon since 2017 and a lot of life happened that pulled me from doing races. Feels so good to be back at it!
This sounds great. Good luck with your marathon training! Please keep us updated with your progress.
