Obama is getting closer to that magic threshold of 50%.

SCORE!

Gallup update and Obama has hit that coveted 50% mark; McCain has, in contrast, become less popular.

Obama - 50%
McCain - 42%

Obama leads by 8 points, up from 6.

The national polls though mean nothing.

How is he doing in the swing states? He needs to take some states (ahem FL & OH) that Kerry could not........

I wouldn't go so far as to say they mean nothing at all. True it's all based on who wins what state on election day. But if all you care about is a general sense of where things sit, national polls have their use.

Anyway, hi everyone! Haven't posted here in a while, it's my department's busy season so I don't have as much down time to post at the moment. I'm also not posting much, if at all, on political debate threads. I still read them but I've had enough of having the same arguements with the same people. I won't convince them and they won't convince me, and all I wind up with is high blood presure. It's just not worth it.

I'd still like to hang out here though! :goodvibes

From Crooks & Liars:

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/...robe-mccain-tries-to-delay-final-report-date/

ABC News is reporting that the McCain campaign is using stall tactics in order to delay the release of the report, currently slated to be handed down at the end of October.

Is the McCain campaign afraid of an ‘October surprise’ involving vice-presidential pick Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska?

The Alaska state senator running an investigation of Gov. Palin says the McCain campaign is using stall tactics to prevent him from releasing his final report by Oct. 31, four days before the November election.

I don’t know about you, but the number one quality I look for in my elected leaders is their ability to abuse power and obstruct investigations. It would be too much of a radical departure from the Bush years otherwise.

Palin’s attorney has decided to pursue a rather bizarre line of defense, arguing against the probe on the following grounds:

“Our concern is that Hollis French [the Anchorage Democrat and former state prosecutor who is project director for the legislative investigation] turns into Ken Starr and uses public money to pursue a political vendetta rather than truly pursue an honest inquiry into an alleged ethics issue,” Van Flein said in an interview.

You heard right: Palin’s attorney is admitting that Ken Starr’s investigation into former President Clinton wasn’t an honest inquiry, but rather a politically-motivated vendetta. I certainly have sympathy for the victims of poltically-motivated vendettas, but in this case Sarah Palin isn’t the victim; the upstanding public safety commissioner she fired, Walt Monegan, is.

Josh has a great breakdown of the scandal in case anyone needs refreshing.

I've been so busy on the non liberal threads that I just realized I should post this here. Check out the video my DH and I made this past weekend in response to the GOP VP choice. We live in Alaska and own a home in Wasilla and lived under the Mayorship of Sarah Palin. Our perspective can be found here www.alaskanperspective.com

Right, if the Republicans can ever hope to be taken seriously again, their convention should gain them points in the polls, and by that I mean, say, 5 at least. Basically, if they can't gain an actual lead over Obama that lasts, they have no hope.

Following Palin's speech, the polls are now:

Obama - 49%
McCain - 42%

That's a 7 point lead for Obama.

Let's watch the polls over the next few days for the full reaction, if any.

I'm expecting a bounce for McCain from the convention, but we'll just have to wait to see.

Actually, I'm expecting a trounce(ing) of Obama. ;)

I think the best McCain can hope for is that he evens up with Obama again, I don't think he'll pull ahead, not from the convention bounce anyway.

Hopefully not. We'll have to see how it goes. The Gallup poll can't include many folks who've watched Palin's speech last night. The upcoming days will tell that story.

Palin audience smaller than Obama's

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) said:
More than 37 million U.S. TV viewers tuned in to watch Sarah Palin accept the Republican nomination for vice president on Wednesday, just shy of the record set last week by Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, Nielsen Media Research reported.

Nielsen has said the 38.4 million viewers averaged by Obama's address last Thursday are believed to be the biggest television audience ever for a U.S. political convention speech, and Palin's tally of 37.2 million came close to that.

Clicky.

Well, the polls are in after the Republican speeches and the results SO FAR are disappointing for the Tories:

Obama - 48%
McCain - 44%

That's a stubborn lead of 4%.

Ah, well.
