Teen flown back to UK Hopital* Update Teen Suffers Cardiac Arrest

The real joke, and I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, is that all of this railling against the "biased" news/media outlets is meaningless. Disney/ABC is one of the biggest, if not the largest news/media company in the world. If the media is crooked and biased against poor Disney, and blatantly disregards the facts in an attempt to somehow "bring Disney down", Disney can dispute it, or spin it however they see fit. They don't because simply reporting a death, is just that, simply reporting a death.

It does seem a little Disney-centric, the media coverage. Then again, I haven't seen this story except for here.

I went to a place last year called Cedar Point in Ohio... It's considered the roller coaster capital of the world and until this year had the tallest, fastest roller coaster in the world. I had never heard of it until friends of mine from MI told me about the place. While I was there with my friends, they told me about some of the deaths that had occured there (including one where a person choked to death by swallowing their gum on that tallest, fastest 'coaster). I was surprised I had never heard of the place considering the amount of accidents they were telling me about. But instead the news-worthy accidents seemed to only happen at certain venues: Six Flags, Disney.

In response to the post above, you don't think other media outlets besides Cap Cities might shoot for what you seem to consider the top dog?

To fault Disney for this girl's situation seems to be poor judgement to me. Rides like the ToT are all over the place these days. Freefall rides are old now, and such rides which go up and down repeatedly are standard. The girl could have gone to Six Flags or Cedar Point and had the same thing happen on the same type of ride.

How can you know about an aneurysm? If you konw you have one, that could break at any moment, then you have surgery usually to have it fixed NOW! You don't go to Disney first.

Many aneurysms are not immediately treated. It can be a watch and see approach or maybe they can't operate. They did not repair my fathers for 4 years, they waited till it started to grow larger before risking surgery.

Disney Reopens Attraction Hospitalized Girl Had Ridden

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Following an overnight inspection, Disney World officials reopened Wednesday an attraction closed when a 16-year-old British girl almost died after riding it.

Disney invited an official from the state Bureau of Fair Rides and Exhibitions to monitor the inspection of the "Twilight Zone Tower of Terror," which the park doesn't typically do. Florida's major theme parks are not directly regulated by the state, and instead have their own inspectors.

Leanne Deacon, of Kibworth, Leicestershire, remained in critical condition Wednesday after suffering cardiac arrest Tuesday minutes after exiting the attraction, which depicts a haunted elevator ride that plunges more than 100 feet.

Deacon's illness came a month after a 4-year-old Pennsylvania boy, Daudi Bamuwamye, died after riding another Disney World attraction, Epcot's "Mission: Space." That ride is so intense that it has motion sickness bags and several riders have been treated for chest pain. An elderly, diabetic woman also died in February after riding the Magic Kingdom's "Pirates of the Caribbean," but the medical examiner said her death "was not unexpected."

Officials aren't releasing precise details of what happened to Deacon, but police say the girl felt nauseous and dizzy after exiting the Tower of Terror.

Leanne thought she'd quickly recover, but park workers nearby who noticed her called in an emergency crew anyway. Before she got to the hospital the girl's condition deteriorated so rapidly that her heart stopped beating and she had to be resuscitated, Orange County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Solomons said. A witness who called 911 said the girl was shaking badly.

On the Tower of Terror, decorated as a haunted hotel, riders are placed in an elevator, which shoots up 13 stories and then plummets back twice. Disney warns riders that they should be "in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure." Pregnant women are advised not to ride.

They fight for ratings, circulation and advertising dollars so their motto is "if it bleeds it leads" Ratings are garnered by showing the worst, most tragic events possible and its better yet when they can cast doubts upon a corporate giant like Disney.

That is so true. And unfortunately after a while you know what happens? We all become numb to it. I mean look everyday on the news, another bombing in Iraq. Now don't get me wrong I totally feel for these soldiers and families, however you hear it day after day after day and it gets to the point where you are numb to it and say, "This is a surprise how?? Ok, next story."

It appears that cast members were on the ball and did their jobs. It's good to know they're on the look out.

I'll pray for Leanne's quick recovery as well as a sense of peace for her family.

While I agree with you, I think the media reports were more an 0ff-subject directed at media outlets attacking Disney for reasons other than this. I agree ABC is a large media outlet but there is also CBS who has been in a huge mess along with other biased stations.

Im not so much throwing mud as much as I'm saying that I think the media is not truthful many times. I only say it because of this: whether you believe in the war or not, interview a person who has fought in Iraq recently about it and then watch the news reports on Iraq that night and you have two completely differently painted pictures.

Simply reporting on something tragic that happened on Disney property isn't a negative thing. Hushing it up and pretending it never happened would be the negative thing, IMO.

Again, apologies for having a slightly different view on this than you do, but differing opinions don't necessarily have to be seen as a "debate".

I never mentioned the media...

I don't care if you have a different opinion then I do, and it's fine if we all voice our opinions, where I feel it becomes a debate is when you quote me with your opinion instead of just stating it and with comments like this:

That's a very philosophical thing to say as long as it's not your child whose time has come. I suspect it would be more difficult to be so zen about death once it becomes personal.

These rides have warnings .... large ones ... in many languages ... the bottom line message being ... if you are not in good health don't ride the ride.

Two years ago I rode Mission Space with my sister and my teen cousin. I was 38, my sister 35 and cousin was 15. My sister is in great shape as was my cousin. When we came off the ride it took us 3 hours to feel well again. The ride has warnings and placards posted EVERYWHERE!!! I'm guessing the 4 yo died of fright ... heart attack ... there is no way in the world i would let a 4 yo old on that ride even if he was tall enough ... i didn't let my DD on and she was 7.

There needs to be some use of common sense folks ... being on vacation doesn't give you license to put yourself in a situation that goes against your better judgement.

:moped: JMO

Remember that each person handles a ride and g-forces differently. My DD9 and I rode mission space 2 weeks ago and neither of us had any dizziness and we went right back on it for a second time. Each person has to know their own limits and what they can and cannot handle. As for my DDs 7 and 9, I normally ride something first if we've never been on it and don't know what it is, then decide if I think they could handle it. Once they ride I let them decide if they want to ride it again.

When I initially read this sad story I already had a feeling there was an underlying condition. I myself have supraventricular tachycardia and I take medication for it. It is where the heart beats really fast, leaves you faint and shaking, like your going to throw up kind of makes you feel like your having a heart attack. Anyway the slightest thing can trigger it, for example the last time I was in the ER was because I went to pick up my daughter and it triggered it. The dr. said when I bent down it contracted my heart and that is what started the palpitations. I have learned that when I ride the fast dropping rides(not roller coasters) but like TOT, or Free Fall at Great Adventure it creates the same reaction and my heart starts palpitating and i start feeling very ill as soon as I come off but because of my heart not from ride sickness (heck I just bungee jumped!!!). Needless to say I don't ride these types of rides that do a quick plummet because it makes me very ill, I just send someone else on with my son so he can enjoy them. I don't think it's Disney just someone may have an underlying condition they aren't aware of or if they do know then they are taking that chance.

anyone know have they release any more info on the girl today? i hope she okay! hate that this has ruin the family vacation!

It is very sad, but it does seem Disney is going out of it's way to do everything right here, including asking State inspectors to observe their own inspections.

I think one thing rings true, Disney has more visitors than your average amusement parks nationally that are only open seasonally and just by sheer percentages, I'm surprised there are no more death related cases than what already happen.

Sounds like we're debating what a debate is, so I guess you are correct, sir.

Thank you, to you and WaltD4Me for answering the question that MemoryMaker asked in response to my statement about the girl possibly having a known aneurysm. My instant notification isn't working.
I don't know anyone personally with this condition but I have heard of it.

One of my co-workers told me this morning that she heard someone at died at Disney, she wasn't sure but she thought it might be on TOT. When I heard this I immediately thought that the person must have had an underlying medical condition. I was petrified when I rode it for the first time a few weeks ago, but to my surprise it really wasn't that bad. It was alot of fun actually. It's really not that intense. The anticipation is what gets you, not the actual ride itself. Anyway, I'm glad this girl really didn't die, and I hope she turns out to be ok.
