Teen flown back to UK Hopital* Update Teen Suffers Cardiac Arrest

I feel sorry for here that it happened, but why are these kids conditions undetected? I have to go to the doctor atleast four times a year and take about for blood tests each time since I have hyperthyroidism, which I am grateful that I go to know what is happening and making sure I'm ok. But I don't get why doctors don't evn get a blood test or something more to ensure the patient's health. Since I had a high blood pressure when I was younger the doctor though I was scared and it went on for like five years without a blood test when we requested a blood test done, since thyroid problems are in our family, which hig blood pressure/pulse rate are signs of what I have.

All I can say about any of this is that no one drags people on any rides. They CHOOSE to get on and it's up to them BEFOREHAND to determine if any ride is "safe" for any family member. Unknown medical conditions are just that--unknown. I read about folks dropping dead while running because they didn't know about a certain medical condition.
But any family who has a family member with a known (or even suspected) medical problem shoud exercise all due caution. Especially on these so called "thrill" type rides.
Sadly, it appears some don't----

First off, I don't want to pick on the person who I quoted, she just summed up a lot of what I am seeing posted about this.

I live with a pre-exisiting condition, I for a very long time now. My father and niece do too, though both have different problems. When you live with the knowledge that your life may be short, will be shorter than average and with a lot more hospital stays, you have to make a choice. Some people chose to live in a protective bubble, never taking any risks. Maybe they will live longer than me. My choice is to live fully. Within reason, but not without any risk.

You take a risk everytime you walk out your door. But do you drive on freeways? fly? eat fatty oily foods you know are bad for you? I bet you do. I go on rides at WDW and DL which warn me away. If I went on no rides that had warnings I would have to sit on a bench all day. Really, they all have warnings. I do a lot of research before I get on a new ride. But I decide for myself and some people would find that reckless, I guess.

It is even harder when you have a child with a known condition. Please don't presume to know that you would not take a child with a known condition on a thrill ride. It is a much more complex choice than you might think. May all of you never have to face that choice.

I don't understand, are you saying that everyone should have a physical before going to Disney? I have dealt with hyperthyroidim on and off for years, but that blood test will not tell my dr's if I have an anurism, or a blood clot of any sort that could rupture. It actually will tell you only about your TSH, T4, T2 levels etc. My Dr does a full blood workup 2x a year, but the rest of the year he just does the tests for my thyroid levels.

A healthy person only needs to go to the Dr. once a year for a physical. They told me my healthy 5 year old doesn't need to come back till she's 7.

I go to the Dr at least 2x a year, but somehow I still go a blood clot in my abdomin, the ER doc has no idea how I would get it, nor does my Dr.

So I guess what I am saying is even if you go to the Dr regularly you can still get an unexpected condition between visits, and it is possible that you could do something to make the problem worse (ie, ride TOT or Mission Space) without having a clue. If the parents knew something was wrong, that's another question.

I am in my late thirties. Our last visit to the WORLD was Dec. 2003. I have always adored wild rides--especially TOT. I could ride that one over and over... On our last vacation I rode mission space. I really thought I was having a heart attack while I was on there. The pressure in my chest was almost more than I could bear. I knew if I walked out of there alive I would never go back on. The next day I went on my favorite TOT--and I don't know if I was still messed up because of MS or what... but I had similar sensations as when riding MS. I knew then my TOT days were over... Fast forward to Aug. 2004--my only brother passed away from a cardiac arrest while vacationing. Our father died of the same thing in his mid 40's. Putting all these factors together--my wild ride days are over :sad2:

All that to say--I would never had known BEFORE riding MS that I would have any kind of problem while on it. I had to experience it to know...

I have head rumour that this girl has now died. I haven't seen anything definite. What amazes me is the attitude of many people on this thread laying blame with the parents. I have not heard anything official to say this girl had a pre-existing condition though there has been mention of a possible DVT following the long flight to the US. This does seem to make sense. Has anybody else heard recent news?

But most people I dare say go to WDW with NO information about the rides and what is offered there. Seems everyone I know that goes really are clueless about a lot of it when going.

My neighbors were and just got back from a 9 day trip. Their video camera was stolen...right out of the stroller...where they left it. IT had over 300 pictures on it and some video. They aren't mad at themselves!

They also took their JUST 3 year old on everything they could, even ToT and Dinosaur. Why, because Disney said he was old enough, since he was tall enough. It made their lives easier to take him on when they could, so they didn't have to do the baby swap. Since they heard Honey I Shrunk the Audience was scary, they didn't take him to that!

when these deaths occur i always have to stop and think was it the parents saying GO ON IT OR WE WILL GO BACK TO THE HOTEL RIGHT NOW! if i dont want to ride something i wont MHO

Where did you see that? I checked Orlando Sentinel & Local 6 & there is no mention of it. I hope that is not the case.

I saw it on the UK board but i've not seen anything on an official news site. Hope it's not so :sad2:

There is an article today that said the girl had gone on the rode several times before with no problem. She could have had a cerebral aneurism that no one knew about. It could have bleed causing her heart to stop. I did read they had found blood on the brain so this is a likely cause of the problem and NO ONE is at fault. Family didn't know she had it and the ride did not cause it.

This is so sad. The girl was 16 not 4 or 5. From what I over heard at the hospital her Mom had said she had a slight headache. The nurse kept saying , "there is no way you could have known". I am sure her family feels horrible but I don't think it was a case of them encouraging her to go on the ride. In fact I think she went on quite a few times. I also heard in the hospital that they had been in the area since June 29th so would it still have something to do with the filght so long after their arrival? Her Mom kept saying she was very athletic and very strong. The poor woman they had to give her a wheelchair to sit in........

I haven't heard anything about her not making it. I hope it is not true. She looks "happy" in the pic of her on ToT. No one is to blame for this. If infact she had an anuerysm, there is no way that anyone could have known. She complained about her legs & head hurting her for a few days prior to this happening. I don't know about anyone else, but my legs (and feet) usually hurt me from all the walking (that I normally do not do) and my head from the sun (normally I am not out walking in the sun for hours at a time). Those complaints weren't anything that would have made me stay off the ride. I have a 16 year old daughter & when I look at her, I think of how horrible this mom must feel. Instead of people looking for someone to blame, channel your energy into positve thoughts for this young girl to recover. No one is at fault. This family needs prayers not someone condeming them. She is 16 years old, she isn't a baby, she knows when she isn't feeling well & this was something that really has no "real symptoms". Years ago a teacher at my son's middle school suffered form a brain anuerysm in the lunch room. No warnings at all! She did pull thru after many months. I am not sure if she ever went back to teaching. There is hope for this young girl & I for one am rooting for her. If she was athletic & in good health (other than this), she has a chance of pulling thru. :grouphug:

There has been nothing on the local news about her not making it. There was plenty when it first happened.

I hope she is o.k. The media stopped covering it..anyone know her condition?

I too rode ToT the day this happened, and am glad other posters have mentioned how happy the girl appears on the ride. We just returned last night, and again rode all the Disney Mountain Range, M:S, ToT, RnR, oh and the competitions Dueling Dragons and Hulk. I am glad my docs don't tell me I can't ride these any more--they are definitely stress busters for me and likely improve my immune functioning.
