Have you ever been fooled by a grocery store item?

Many years ago I rushed into our local grocery store to buy a head of lettuce. It wasn’t until I got to the cashier that I realized it was actually a head of cabbage! Fortunately I was able to run back to the produce department and grab the lettuce. :lmao:

Wrong sour cream can be just as bad. Try using low fat/no fat sour cream in Polish/Ukrainian/Hungarian recipes. Not pleasant. Not sure what it is like in your neck of the woods but the most common brand here has 'Gold' sour cream that is meant specifically for cooking.
I have never heard of Gold brand. Guessing it is regional?

I've learned by accident that "sugar free" and "no sugar added" can mean something different with different companies.

When Mott's applesauce says "no sugar added" they really mean it. No sugar or sugar substitutes added. When I buy a 6 cup pack, one cup may be nice and sweet. But the next cup came from a different batch and it's rather sour. 😵‍💫 They don't put in extra sugar to regulate the taste. So, whatever apples went into making that batch is what you get. But, I'd rather not have the extra sugar.

I thought it would be the same for other canned fruit when I saw labels for "sugar free" canned peaches. Nope, they mean they don't use sugar, but will use a nasty tasting sugar substitute added to the liquid the peaches are canned with. :crazy2:

Yeah, I never trust anything that says 'sugar free' or 'less sugar' anymore. Usually that just means they replaced the sugar with some fake sugar junk.

Years ago I bought some new kind of cherry 7Up that said "33% less sugar" on it and assumed that they literally just put less sugar in it, and so I bought some. Took one sip and immediately picked up the nasty aftertaste of sugar substitute (ANY sugar substitute). Checked the ingredients and yep, they just replaced the 33% with sucralose or whatever. I guess I should have known better but I just figured that since it didn't flat out say sugar free, that it would just mean that it was less sweet.

First he placed our Arby's order on line. I wanted just a classic roast beef. He clicks through things quickly and doesn't really look at details and I ended up with a beef and cheddar. He thought they just gave me the wrong thing until he went to place an order later the next month and realized it was the first thing on the classic menu and he just didn't pay attention.

That same thing happened to me at McDonalds. I hadn't bought anything in a long time, and I usually didn't order from the self-order menu. I wanted chicken nuggets. I scrolled down to the amount of nuggets I wanted and ordered. I didn't know that chicken nuggets now come in different flavors. I ended up with some spicy nuggets that I never would have ordered had I known. Later I scrolled down the menu again and found regular, classic chicken nuggets were listed way down near the bottom. :headache:

I have bought cilantro thinking it was parsley, ewww in the wrong recipe. Now I read the twist ties, live and learn.

Nathans make these horrible cheese dogs. In almost identicle packaging to their regular hot dogs.
