Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

I'm back from WDW. It was a great vacation. The weather cooperated and toward the end of the week had some showers, but mostly sunny with not a much humdity as we have in PA. Jeanne her family and mine had alot of laughs together, but the the most laughs were when we golfed together. It is good that only DS#2 was with us as I don't think many other golfers would have appreciated us. We ate, drank and laughed alot. It was a fun trip.

I will wait several days to see if I gained any weight, but with all the walking and golfing 3 times it shouldn't be a big gain. I started back with my exercise routine yesterday as I did Ab and spin class. Today will be taking the dog for a long walk since she had to be in the kennel the entire time.

I did call for DVC reservations for marathon weekend yesterday. I only plan to do the 5K and we will be there 1/6-1/12. Tried for BWV but not able to get in there, so just booked at OKW.

Nancy: Glad to hear you guys had a good trip :goodvibes I'm sure any weight you gained will come back off pretty easily.

I just booked my room for marathon weekend-- we got BLT :woohoo::woohoo: and are pretty excited about it. We will be in a 1 bedroom with Bay view-- wanted a studio but they were not available so we'll suffer in a 1 bedroom :rotfl: Who needs extra points left in an account anyway? Our babysitter friend and I will be going down on the 7th and DH and DD will be coming after school on the 8th-- then we're going Goofy. I'm really psyched, now I just have to train :rolleyes1

Yeah about BLT! :yay:
No studios available? I need points, so I won't be going for the 1 bdrm.
Maybe I'll try for Boardwalk tomorrow morning...Or Beach Club...
I'd love to stay in Kidani, just worried about the transport to the race.

I just can't conceive of the Goofy...How? Makes training for just a marathon seem awfully doable, I guess. ;)

Yeah for a great trip to WDW!
BWV not available? Did you try Beach Club?
I guess I may be staying at Kidani.

I know there are no Beach Club studios (at least a few weeks ago there weren't) because we tried that first. Kidani is really nice and you should enjoy it, so don't feel bad if that is what you get-- awesome savanna and pool. Race transport shouldn't be a problem-- we used the bus from SSR last year and it worked out great. We were just eager to try the monorail resort, largely for the ease of our sitter getting around on race days.

We got back late last night and we a wonderful time with my son and his GF and Nancy and her crew! And I'm sure I can think of some trouble incidents to report.

Thank-you so much for all the birthday wishes. I haven't read all the posts I missed, just what's on this page so I have lots of catching up to do.

I got a nice little unexpected extra gift for my birthday this year: after only 2 years of applying, I was accepted into the NYC marathon via the lottery! This is something I REALLY want to do , but it's a bit of a logistics problem this year. In fact, the only reason I applied was because I was certain I wouldn't get in and wanted to keep my string of appilications active (after 3 years being denied, you become a guaranteed entry for the 4th ear). The worst case scenario is that I can defer my entry to next year if I pay for both. At $182 per entry, it's a pricey alternative, but it just may be my best bet. I can't believe I finally got what I've been waiting for and now I may have to postpone it. Incidently, the reason I wouldn't be able to do it is because John and I are cruising with Nancy and Norm until the day before. I've worked out all the possibilities to make it happen and it's just not a good situation. Under the best conditions, it would be touch and go.....and if just one small thing went wrong, I'd be screwed. So my only viable alternative is to change the cruise or postpone the race and I hardly think it's fair to disrupt Nancy's plans because of my race.

Anyway, that's it for now......I'll catch up tomorrow!

I, too, will catch up tomorrow. I've been enjoying the single life a little too much, but without any scandalous stories to tell. :rolleyes1

And tomorrow I'll track down those missing cousins of ours! :thumbsup2 I'm getting worried about some of them.

But first the Monday Mixer beckons...

:stitch:'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

This one is JenG's very good question, excerpted, about the difference between building a base and training for a race.

What is the difference between maintaining or building a base and training for a race? I've only been running for a year and I've either been taking time off running or training for a race. What is just building a base?

How is your approach (mental or otherwise) and exercise routine different when building your base versus training? Do you run less? Do different exercises? Approach the run differently psychologically?

Good morning, cousins! I still haven't read all the posts, but thought I would chime in regarding the mixer question before life takes over.

For me, training involves a set schedule of long walks. I write them down on my calendar working backward from the event and treat them like a doctor's appt. or some other non-negotiable committment. Then I adopt the Nike philosophy: Just Do It! In between the long walks, I make sure I get in at least 2 very short but quick walks of about 2 - 2.5 miles each.

When I'm not training for a specific event, I ease up on my scheduled long walks.....which usually means I don't do them at all! But I always cross-train no matter what. That usually consists of spin class, water aerobics and golf (walking, not riding).
I can honestly say that the last time I trained for anything was for the WDW marathon in January. Since then, I've done 2 half-marathons without any scheduled training. I finished both, but definitely felt that I was not up to optinum form. I would think that just by doing several events a year, you can maintain a base, but it won't result in a peak performance.

Hi Cousins!

Just popping in on the base building question!

I am base building now for the Goofy. I am trying to stay in 1/2 marathon ready condition. This means getting in regular long walks that have 8 to 12 miles and keeping up on my cross training of Pilates and Weight training. That way when I begin the Goofy training, it's just plain easier on me.

Good morning Cousins!

My base building started when I read an article in Runners World about how to stay in condition like an elite so you can train for any race in 4 weeks. Now bear in mind that you have to build your long run up for a marathon so that you are 18 miles for the LR before starting the 4 week training. You can search under Runners World for train like an elite or something like that.

This is my weekly maintenance schedule:
Monday-3-5 miles plus 4 x10 second hill sprints
Tuesday-1 mile easy; 2-3 miles at half marathon or tempo pace; 1 mile easy
Wednesday-Rest day
Thursday-2-4 miles easy plus 2 miles moderate pace
Friday-5 miles easy including 6 x30 second fartlek intervals at 5K pace or faster
Saturday-Rest day
Sunday-9 easy miles

I have found this program to work really well for me and I love the schedule as it works well with mine. On days I don't feel like running, I substitute a ski in the winter (skate ski which is higher aerobics) or 3.5 bike miles for every 1 running mile during the fall/summer/spring months.

I look forward to the answers from other cousins to this question!! :goodvibes

Hey Cousins.... Warrior in the houssssssseee!!

As far as base, when I did my first half, I then did a few 5k and then stopped altogether and did nothing until the next half came around. It was difficult to get back into it. So when I did the next half I just kept my short walks/jog in the middle of the week and did like a 5 miler on my long days. I kept doing local 5k's almost 1 a month to keep myself motivated. I figured if I signed up and paid for them I would just keep going. This helped tremendiously.
Now my base miles are a bit more like 7-8 on my long days. I believe this helps for when I do start "Officially" training for my next half. Also it helps to do those middle miles to help you get faster as that is what I am working on now. I have a goal to try and beat my previous finish times. Your body I think just does better when keeping up some type of base miles. You will probably have less cramping, you get your hydration figured out and you get to know "your" body and what works for you. I do other stuff on my non-walking/joggin days. I like to swim, bike (when I get one) and so some core work or BL Dvds.

Hope that essplains it.
My Official Half training starts the week of August 16th for the Spacecoast Half in November. It has you doing a long distance of 8 miles at about week 6 or 7, so I will be ahead of the game and very prepared for getting in the longer distances.

Good Morning, Cousins and Visitors!

The big difference in my training and base building is distance. When I'm training I have a LSR that actually increases most weeks until taper. Base work just requires the same distance, but I'll change it up with incline, walk vs. run, etc.

Like most of you, I am much more vigilant about not missing a workout when I'm in training. I'm also more focused, and determined to really get something out of each workout. Sometimes I'll substitute a walk on the beach or around as my workout when I'm base building, but I'm pretty careful with knowing my exact distances and times when I'm in training.

My BIL just started his base building for the Half in January. He's running 1.5 miles each night...it's good for me, because I can see how far I've come. That seems hardly worth changing my clothes for to me at this point, so I've made progress! :thumbsup2

Maria :upsidedow

I'll be back later to catch up with everyone but I wanted to quickly join in the mixer this week (I was tracked down by our fearless leader!)

I"m glad JenG had this question because I've been confused lately on what I should be doing.:confused3 I do have my :goofy:Goofy training schedule already on the calendar. It starts on August 23 but what should I be doing before that time??? :confused3
I'm much better at exercising when I have a plan to stick to. I need to get something written out for the summer so I don't slack off. I'm going to take a closer look at Lisa's plan and see what others have to say.

I do know that the whole exercise thing works better for me when I have a plan. Hopefully I'll get that figured out today.

Now it's time to get back to my fun duties:laundy:

I'M DOING THE NYC MARATHON!
OMG, this is really going to happen....I'm excited  I'm scared :scared1:

Thank-you, Nancy, for making it work!

Ohana is going to see some miles now! And contrary to what I posted a while back, I will NOT be going Goofy this year....or probably any other year for that matter. For me, NYC will be the pinnacle. I'll probably end up doing the 5K and volunteering/scream-teaming for all of you. My daughter is doing the Goofy and my son and DH may decide to do an event also, so I will definitely be there, but I just want to take it easy for a little while. You'll still allow me to attend the WISH meet, right? I sure hope so!

Jeanne - Congratulations! I know you've really wanted to do NYC and I'm so happy for you! :cool1::thumbsup2

Maria - Happy Birthday!!!!!!! :cake:party::bday::drinking1

Just wanted to pop in and say HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeanne - That is so cool! I know you can do it! And I won't even be at Marathon Weekend this year, but I still think I am part of the group... so don't worry about it!!!!

As for a base. Well when I wasn't so chubby (aka pregnant), I tried to stick to short runs 2 times a week, 1-2 days of cross training, then long runs on weekends of 4-5 miles. More is I were adventurous. I always wanted to be well trained for a 5K if one popped up. Now I am know I am not at that point now, but I did do the TM on Friday and jogged a little. I have jiggles where there weren't jiggles before.... YIKES!!!!

Before I do anything else, I must wish our very dear Maria a very special, wonderful, spectacular

Happy Birthday!
:dance3: :bday:party::cake::drinking1

I'm so sorry I didn't get in to posting before now. I thought I'd be on the DIS much earlier today. :headache:

Maria, we are very lucky to have you on our team and in our lives! :flower3:
