Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Base building is what we all talk about when we say training to train...getting yourself up to some base mileage before the actual training program starts. It usually consists of 3 or 4 days running per week. Some folks like to throw in some cross-training as well. I'm not good at freestyle so I usually try to find some kind of program to follow. Right now, I'm doing the higdon spring training program.

During training, base mileage is those short runs during the week that I tended to blowoff during training for the full.:rolleyes1 I truly found out the hard way that those base miles are really important building blocks for the long runs on the weekends. You can't just go out and toss off a 20 miler on Sat when you've only done 2 or 3 miles one of 2 days a week up to that point.

Jeanne...congratulations on NY!! How very cool!

Mixer Question: This is a very good question, JenG! I appreciate seeing others' responses. I really don't have a lot to add to what others have said about the base being regular running/walking without so much emphasis on speedwork or variety. I do more XT when on base mileage. Mentally, I have to say it's very hard for me to shift to training mode. I look forward to the races, but once I hit training I get very anxious if it looks like I need to skip a run or cut one short. So during training, working out (esp. running) takes precedence over many things. You all call it dedication, determination, focus--I'm motivated by fear!

Also, my eating habits change during training--and it's not just the mileage. I slip into fueling and hydrating strategies better, which is something I should do year round. I'll need to figure out how to harness the training mentality for my day-to-day eating.

A special shout-out to PR Lisa and her recommendation for the Runner's World plan: still working on getting there. (That's the problem with not having a race in the near future--I've been keeping the runs short.)

Richard: Rock n Roll? Dallas? March? Inaugral? Sounds tempting. Only problem is that it's kind of competing with the Princess 1/2. Not that I know anything about my schedule that far in advance. But it's still tempting...

Maria (pre-birthday posting): I like to plan (most) trips, too. There's something relaxing about creating a vacation itinerary even if the vacation pace is breakneck. Congratulations on the weight loss, the diet soda, and the water intake. You're going to be feeling good about going on vacation. And you always look marvelous. :goodvibes

Julie: I wish I could say I've been practicing my cougar stalking skills, but no. I've gotten behind on a couple of deadlines because of the Stratford trip, and have been catching up on things. Soon, though, soon. Wouldn't want to waste my being a single lady--just need gloss on my lips and a man on my hips. Put your hands up! :rotfl: How are you feeling today? Did the migraine blow up fully?

The WDW Reservations posts: Congrats to all who've made them. I've got to do that yet, but once again I'm sure we'll put it off for far too long. Planning on getting Kira to do the leg work. (It's what she does as a travel agent.)

Nancy: Your trip sounds wonderful. Were you all drinking on the golf course, as well as other places? :lmao: I'm so glad to hear you'll be in WDW and doing the 5K. I'm doing it too, so it'll be a good kick off to the weekend. Are you going to scream team in the same spot as last year? (And you are the sweetest person, re: Jeanne's NYC marathon)

JenB: Is the whole family will be in Disney this year, along with babysitter friend?

Jeanne: Congratulations on the NYC Marathon. That's wonderful news and I'm so happy everything worked out. It'll be a race to remember, one for the books, and can see why it'll be the pinnacle. And without a doubt you're welcome at the WISH meet. Can't imagine it without you. Yay for your DD and the Goofy. Is the Greek participating?

Kathy: I have yet begun to track you, although tracking does precede stalking. :lmao: What's your Goofy plan, btw? I'm so bad that I haven't begun to formulate mine.

Jen: So good to see you here! :cheer2: How are things going with the pregnancy? Keep us updated!

As for me: Okay, I'm finally getting caught up with things around here. Don't expect it to last, though. I'm going to D.C. for the weekend to visit DOOD. (Anyone want to make a weekend day trip to see us?) I'm taking the train, and will need your most recent book suggestions. Right now I'm working my way through James Joyce's Ulysses, and that's not going on the train with me. Just too much work. :rolleyes1

Yes Maria, Happy Birthday!!! I agree we are fortunate to have Maria as a buddy.

Base building is for me time in motion. My minimum maintance requirement is an hour of motion a day 5 days a week. That is a minimum, my ideal that I shoot for is:

20 miles of walk training
3 hours of pilaties type stretching and core work
2hours of pool running

When I'm ramping up for race season I try to get 5 more miles a week of speed work and bring my long walk to 8 miles. For marathon training I bring my long walk to 16 miles.

Disney Deaming Panda:hippie:

Oh, you're not getting off the hook that easily Maria! Tell us all about your special day. What you did, what you have planned if you're delaying gratification until your trip, etc. You know I love a good birthday story almost as much as a good birthday! :goodvibes

Maria - WISH-ing you a very Happy Birthday!

Jeanne - Good luck with NYC and have a great time!

Debra - Well, I can't do anything about the scheduling of the new Dallas RnR half marathon, but if I am still healthy after my winter schedule, I will try to be there.

Happy Birthday Maria! party:

Jeanne - Congratulations on NYC! :cool1: What a pinnacle that will be!

Debra - If I can figure out how to shoot video with my camera and actually upload it, I'll show you what it looks like when Sienna has vacuum cleaner playtime. I'm thinking she may be my solution to paying for Disney in January - I'm pretty sure we can win Funniest Home Videos when I record her sticking her tongue in the hose and going back again and again! I figured she wouldn't do it again, but Sunday she came running and it was more of the same. :rotfl:

As for the mixer question, I've adopted what my off-season Galloway buddies do. We try to keep a base long run of 10 miles all year, regardless of where we are in the season or what we're training for. I try to do a couple of midweek runs as well, but I unfortunately discovered that I can still do the long runs even if I don't do anything during the week. They're not as easy, but once you've done 10 for several weeks in a row, it becomes pretty routine. And then once 10 is your base, our group leader told us you're pretty much ready to do a half marathon any time you decide to do one. I'm hoping that training for a marathon will be easier this year if I'm starting from a base of 10 too! The actual training season will be much more structured, with specific mileages for the weekends, and a group of us are even toying with the idea of meeting before the runs and doing an extra 3 (on Jeff's suggestion), so that our final LR will actually be 29 instead of his scheduled 26. (I know, I know, call me crazy...)

Ran 10 on Saturday, but haven't done anything since (well, other than mowing the lawn tonight!). Have to fit in DD's graduation on Thursday, so it may be a chaotic week.

Meanwhile, we're working on the race schedule. Richmond Full 11/14, Victory Junction Half 12/13?, Disney Half 1/9?, Myrtle Beach Half 2/13, Indianapolis Half 5/8. (note to self: buy lottery ticket!)

Jackie

Jackie: I'd watch that video! And I love the details of the Galloway Group. I think next season I'll look out for the Pgh chapter (we much have one, right)? Yes for the Disney 1/2!

In other news, since I'm the 'Ohana police (always thought of myself as a mob boss, but :confused3), I'm looking for several cousins' numbers for the team:
  • Christa (April, too)
  • Corinna (April, too)
  • Denny
  • Jen117
  • Kathy
  • Robert & Linda
  • Sunny

What is the difference between maintaining or building a base and training for a race? I've only been running for a year and I've either been taking time off running or training for a race. What is just building a base?

How is your approach (mental or otherwise) and exercise routine different when building your base versus training? Do you run less? Do different exercises? Approach the run differently psychologically?

Great questions. As most have already replied in order to train for an event you have to run/walk and put in those steps. Nothing substitutes.

Training for a race involves a training schedule, a basic calendar plan, to meet the goal of a particular date/event. It is tried and true and will help us to not injure ourselves. A training schedule brings us up to the event in distance and basic strength and allows for a proper taper just prior to the event.

Maintaining/building a base involves development. We need to have muscles in order to perform the tasks. Continue to strive to improve running/walking form during the maintenance/build time. When not following a training schedule it is time for a little extra muscle development--strength and stretch as well. Runners/walkers who do not work on strength training of some sort along with stretching will be setting themselves up for injury. Core strengthening is very important to help us as we move along and stretching is just as important. Many runners/walkers forget this or don’t understand the importance. (All of this does continue through most calendar training schedules in the form of cross training during the week.) Now is a good time to work on things.

Maintaining/building a base time is a good chance to try something different too. It helps to keep out some of the boredom of running/walking all the time. I’ll continue with a running/walking schedule and add in some other activities for fun, golf, bicycling, swimming whatever I can fit. It may seem like a lot, but I think you can trade off a day of running/walking for extra XT during this time.

Jeanne, so happy for your NY Marathon. Glad that you’ll still be joining us in Jan. You would definitely be missed if you didn’t come play.

Maria, Happy Birthday to you!

What’s this I’m reading about a Dallas RnR? Hmmmm. Must check into that. I was considering San Antonio in 2011 to get the state of TX checked off my list. But that was going to make WDW in Jan not happen. Hmmm, more to consider here. I’m glad I checked into the Cousins Thread tonight.

Thanks so much to everybody for all the incredible birthday wishes! :grouphug:

I am at a workshop today and most of tomorrow, so probably not alot of time to DIS. We are actually celebrating my birthday at home tonight, it's turned into a 3-day affair -- birthday eve, birthday, and antebirthday. I promise more details will follow later.

I will probably use today to surreptitiously plan our day at Busch Gardens. No one can render material as boring as HUD, and they have me from 9-5...:rolleyes1

Maria :upsidedow

Happy Birthday Maria:bday: I hope you had a nice birthday celebration.

I was glad that it worked out to change our cruise plans so that Jeanne can do NY marathon, especially since all my booze on the cruise will be going on her tab. I didn't spring that on her until after I made the changes. :rotfl2: We have a good time together and will have more stories to tell.

Debra-- Our golf game is bad enough without adding booze to the mix. We did most of our drinking at the pool with our own alcohol, it is much cheaper that way. My son made a trip nearly every day to the Hess station to buy more beer. Jeanne and I made a special trip to Germany to buy Riesling. In Jan I think I am just going to order all the booze from Garden Grocer at the beginning, less running around. I will not be staying at BWV in Jan as I couldn't get a studio there, so won't be scream team at that location. Might just go to HS and cheer from there or volunteer on the course. I have months to decide. I have things scheduled for this weekend, otherwise I would come to DC to meet up with you since it is only 2 hrs drive.

I am a short term goal achiever and when I was doing the long distance races, I could not maintain a base between races as it just burned me out. I needed to start fresh for each race and build up from there. In between events I did all my other cross training elipical, spin, pilates, pump and 1 or 2 short walks (3-4 miles per week).

I weighted myself today and found that I only gained 2 pounds so not to bad. This is my church carnival week and I am working 3 days during the carnival so it is going to be hard to get in my exercise and eating healthy this week. My goal for the week is to just not gain any more and start back next week to healthy eating.

Have a good day everyone.

Nancy

Happy Birthday Maria:bday: I hope you had a nice birthday celebration.

I weighted myself today and found that I only gained 2 pounds so not to bad. Nancy

I was afraid to get on the scale, but found that I actually didn't gain anything at all. :cool1: Nancy must have gained because she drank more than I did! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Our best workout was doing a wine run to Germany and trying to beat out the Illuminations crowd! We were definitely on marathon pace. Unfortunately we were about 2 minutes too slow to avoid a huge downpour just before we got to the bus station shelter. When we got back, drenched of course, our husbands wanted to know why we couldn't just get the wine at the hotel store. But it wasn't just the wine......we had to have one of those chocolate Mickey-eared gingerbreadmen!

Speaking of weight-gain, I am now motivated to lose weight like never before. I just learned that the pace requirement for a supported course in the NYC marathon is 15:00min/mi. I don't think I can maintain that for a full marathon, but will try to do it as long as I can. The finish line and clock remain open for 10 hours, but after 6:30 they open all the streets to traffic and the participants have to use the sidewalks and obey the crosswalk lights. Not good..... Anyhow I figure the lighter I can get myself, the quicker I will be. My goal is to lose 5 pounds a month, or 20-25 total. That will bring me back to "one-derland", which I haven't seen in a long time. I guess i need to find my way back to the Mean-Leaners thread!

Does anyone here watch the HBO series True Blood? If so, I may have something interesting to share with you.

Still looking for cousins to update the spreadsheet....y'all know I'll stalk you on FB. :rotfl2:

Lily: Thank you for the comprehensive answer to the Monday Mixer question. It answered questions for me that I didn't know I had, and I know it will be/is useful for others, too! :thumbsup2 Let us know what you decide about the Dallas RnR!

Maria: I know you're probably still enjoying some birthday bliss! You deserve it! Especially after all-day meetings. I hope your trip planning made HUD a little more productive for you.

Nancy:

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Stories, stories! We want stories!

Congrats on only gaining 2 lbs. (I gained that much on my shorter trip to Stratford.) I think, as Jeanne said, have been the extra calories from drinking Jeanne under the table! :thumbsup2 You two have such a good time together, in all ways, and the stories make me want to pick up golfing.

Your plan for stocking up on the booze is the way to go. DOOD and I plan on doing a grocery run at the beginning, too (we always rent a car) and minimize the running back and forth. Alcohol is definitely on our lists. Ice cream, too, for the 'Ohana social.

Note to all cousins: We'll need to start planning the social soon! At least getting the date/time in place.

Jeanne and Nancy: The Riesling/chocolate Mickey-eared gingerbreadmen run sounds like it was well worth fighting the crowds. Yummy! :cloud9:

Jeanne: I haven't watched True Blood yet; it's in my Netflix queue. So just tell me that it's worth watching. Oh, what the heck, tell me more!

I'm so excited for your NYC Marathon adventure. What a great opportunity and motivator for your weight-loss goals. They're totally do-able, too. I'm glad you're going back to the Lean Meaners, but we also have several of us here working on becoming lighter (and faster): Maria, Corinna, JenB, Jen, and Mel as far as I know.... Together we can cheer each other on and cheer you on to a photo finish at the NYC Marathon! :cheer2:

As for me: Everyone hear the news about the shooting at the Holocaust museum today? :scared1: I'm so sad about it. I just don't understand why such hatred...

Since I'm gone again this weekend, does anyone want to volunteer to post the mixer question? I was thinking about going with Jeanne's question about movie gems, those lesser known movies that are special to you.

Um, Debra, I think Jen is actually working on gaining weight at the moment...probably about 8 lbs., 4 oz.! :)

*hits head on forehead, V8 style*
DOH

Sorry Jen. It's not that I forgot you're pregnant...it's that I forgot these two things are incompatible. :rotfl2:

Thanks Maria. Boy is my face red.

Hello everyone. Sorry I've been so quiet this week-- it's been a really long one starting with DD5 up all night puking last Thurs:sick: then me being on call this weekend and crashing my computer on Monday. I'm finally clawing my way back into control of my life.

Happy Belated Birthday to Jeanne and Maria :cheer2:

I'm right in there on the attempt to lose weight-- 5 lbs a month would be great. Since I've started "officially" (at least in my mind) training for the DL1/2 I've been much better about my diet. I'm back t the pre-Disney trip weight but still would like to be 15 lbs down by the race.

I have to come up with new stuff to watch while I exercise-- all of my shows have ended for the season-- time to start renting episodes of new series or catching up on movies-- must be properly distracted to run.

Hi Cousins!

Jackie -Add me to the list of people who'd love to see a video of you vacuuming your dog. I don't even remember to vacuum the floor sometimes, never mind a dog!

Nancy - I think it's great that you only gained 2 lbs on your WDW trip. :thumbsup2 I always gain much more than that.

Jeanne - Good luck with your training for NYC. :goodvibes When is it - is it in the fall?

Maria - How's the 3-day birthday celebration going? party:

Debra - Have a fun weekend! :cool1:

Jen B - I hope your DD is feeling better. :goodvibes

As for me, I'm in another running slump. I'm realizing that I find it hard to be motivated when I don't have a race to train for. Hopefully, I'll find some motivation this weekend. For some good news, DS2's celiac test came back negative, so that's a relief. I probably won't have time to post again until Sunday. DD9 is having her first slumber party this weekend. We'll have 6 little girls here Sat night. :scared1: I'm sure I'll need a nap on Sunday...
