Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Jeanne-- We have a 3pm tee time on Sat and then we are going to DTD for dinner. I didn't make reservations but it will be a late dinner (9pm) so we are going to try Ragland Road. My plan right now is to go to either AK or HS in the morning before golf, it will depend if those 2 young men can get out of bed early. I did ask for a Hospitality House studio, so I hope we are on Pennisular Road, if not there we should be across from the Hospitality House. If our dinner plans change, I'll give you a call. I guess we will catch up with you on Sunday at Chef de France.

Julia and Jeanne-- It is easy to catch up on J&K as TLC is constantly showing the shows all weeklong and have frequent marathons. However, beware once you start to watch the trainwreck is it hard to turn away.

Julia--- I hope your son's test turns out negative. It is hard to get in the exercise with school activities, I'm sure you will get back on track soon.

Maria--I stopped the diet soda for 2 weeks and it really made no differnce in weight loss. I know Beth is continuing to refrain from the diet coke, but I decided after 2 weeks I was putting diet pepsi back into my life. You will have to let me know if you think it made a difference. I frequently go without diet soda while on vacation since most places have diet coke and I don't care for it as much as diet pepsi, so will drink unsweetened ice tea. The longest I think I have gone is 3 weeks without diet pepsi and then I would kill for one if I had to. Good luck with your weight loss plan before your trip.

I am all packed, need to take the dog to the kennel. The grass is still wet so not sure if it will get mowed before we leave, I let Norm worry about that when he gets home.

Beth-- Will miss you while I'm gone, but not work. I'll have a drink for you.

Talk to you all when I get back.

Same experience...I stopped diet soda (and caffeine) for 2 months. I felt hungrier and no weight loss. And I'm totally with you on the Diet Pepsi, Nancy. That's the downside to WDW...no Pepsi products. We always bring our own.

I've never watched the Jon and Kate thing either. I guess I'll be glad when it's over at this point. One of our radio stations was discussing...supposedly, Jon or Kate's sister has come out and said that everything you see on TV is faked and the show pays for all the stuff Kate is supposedly budgeting to buy.

Jeanne and Nancy...have fun at WDW! We may do a daytrip on Sat...end of kindergarten/10th grade quick trip!

Jeanne & Nancy - Hope you're having a great time at WDW!

Mel - Are you there today too?

Maura - Isn't the Furminator the greatest invention ever? We don't need it with our current dogs, but it was a lifesaver with Mystic!

Debra - "Up" is definitely on the agenda for the next week or two. The review in the paper here was even more positive than your review!

I have to gloat a little... my first season with Galloway was 2 years ago. After the first couple of runs (3 and 4 miles), a group of veteran runners would go back out after we finished to do more miles since the runs weren't long enough for them. The concept was inconceivable to me at that time, since 4 and 5 miles seemed really long to me then. I didn't run through the winter after the first season, so I was basically starting all over last spring, so when the same group went back out last year I looked longingly at them and thought "maybe one day..." One day came today! We finished our first run of the season (3 miles), and then 4 of us headed back out to do a total of 10, but ended up being 8 1/2 (we didn't exactly think our route through completely!) It was so much fun to watch the new runners look at us like we were crazy!

Hi all!

I had a decent week training wise. I did two 4 mile walks and one 7 mile. I also got to the gym one day for cross training. Better than the last few weeks so I'm happy! :thumbsup2The next few weeks are busy with end of school picnics, award ceremonies, chorus concerts, swim team practices, etc so I hope I can keep finding the time to exercise.

Julie - I don't watch J&K+8 either. I watched one show when they first started - couldn't take any more.
I hope your son's test results are negative. We have food allergies in our family -:sad2: no fun when eating out and having no control over ingredients. Disney is one of the only places where I think most of the chefs understand and accomadate food allergies and dietary concerns.

Mel - ::MickeyMoHope you made it to Disney today. What a great way to celebrate the end of the year.

Jeanne & Nancy - I wish I was in the world with you. :dance3:Hope you're having a great time!

Richard - Dog grooming UGHH! :headache:We no longer have our sweet pup but when we did he was not too fond of bathing, brushes, haircuts - he was actually banned from three groomers in town!

Debra - Are you enjoying the Shakespeare festival? Sounds quite interesting.
No, I'm not doing Baltimore. I may do a half that same weekend though in Ohio.
Looking forward to seeing :3dglasses UP with the girls soon. Thanks for the good review!

JenG - I hope the flu bug has gone away and you were able to get in a strong run today.:)

Maria - :confused:Do I remember correctly that you are going to Universal in a few weeks? We'll be there for the first time in August - I'll have a bunch of questions for you when you return. Where are you staying? We're planning on staying at the HRH.

Jackie - :banana:Yeah for the 3 miles being easy and WOW for doing 8.5. :cheer2: That's great! I also had a similar feeling this week. I did seven on Monday and was so proud when I finished. I remember when that would have seemed like a very, very, long distance.

:sunny:Enjoy the weekend!

Kathy, great job on the workouts this week. I have been a sloth and took this week off from exercising. I'm turning over a new leaf on Monday.

I agree that Disney is one of the few places where it's easy to eat for a food allergic person. My DD9 has food allergies and eating out at WDW is such a treat for her. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that my little guy's test is negative.

Hey Kathy -- Yes we are going to Florida June 18th, and Universal June 21st. We're staying at the PBH, we stayed at RPR in 2007. I've never been to HRH, but I'll be glad to try to answer any questions you have. I definitely plan to visit there this trip, if nothing else I have to experience the pool! ;)

Jackie -- You have arrived! How fun for you to realize how much progress you have made. I would have just stopped at 3, you are truly dedicated! :thumbsup2

Mel -- I'm also one of the Pepsi People. But, I don't have them very often because of the caffeine, so I guess I don't miss them as much. I've learned to drink Diet Coke, but whenever I can I get light minutemaid lemonade instead at WDW. :drinking:

Nancy & Jeanne -- I hope there's going to be some WDW left by the time the rest of us get back...

Julie -- What are we doing inside on this gorgeous day?! Anyway, I've made a compromise with myself and the big weight loss plan. I'm letting myself have 1- 100 cal pak of the choc. covered pretzels, and in exchange I have to walk 4 mi instead of "resting" every 4th day. That means my new pre-vacay plan is run 4, walk 4, run 4, walk 4. I convinced myself this was a fair trade, and will move me toward my milestone goal. I may not make it by the big b-day, but I definitely should before we leave! :thumbsup2 Also, I only get the pretzels if I have enough points left, and if I've done everything else I'm supposed to (i.e. worked out) that day.

 to Jen, JenB, JenG, Denny, Robert, Linda, Christa, Richard, Mark, Debra

I ran my 4 mi this am and it felt great. I just went through my summer clothes and decided what I have to supplement before we leave, and now the only major purchase I'm left with is the theme park tickets.

We had to buy red shirts for ds and I to wear to church tomorrow. If we hadn't got an e-mail reminder, I would have totally forgotten it's Pentecost. Dennis refuses to acknowledge more than 2 days that are "must-do" for church (he likes to attend bi-weekly), but he forgot he's a counter for the offering tomorrow, so he has to go :lmao: I'm hoping to get my walk in before we go, so I don't sit there and wish I'd done it ::yes::

Ok, I promise to stop typing now...

Except I forgot to point you all to my fabulous new clippie of the shining stars -- designed by our very own Corinna! She even posted a link because I'm a little computer-challenged. You are so very creative -- and talented! :yay:

Richard - Dog grooming UGHH! :headache:We no longer have our sweet pup but when we did he was not too fond of bathing, brushes, haircuts - he was actually banned from three groomers in town!

My CoCo (pictured in my signature) just loves bathtime!!! I think the only thing she loves more than getting washed down is getting towel-dried. I am sure it had to do with all the rub down time and one on one contact. Meanwhile my wife's "Jack Roodle" (Jack Russell terrier and poodle mix) is a holy terror to bathe even though he is less than 20% of the size.

Maria - Did you get outside yesterday? I took DS outside for a couple of hours in the afternoon (boy, was he nice and tired by bedtime :thumbsup2) and then we had one of our sidewalk cafes in the evening. It was a beautiful day to be outside. By the way, I think your weight loss/exercise plan is great. It seems very realisitic, which makes it easier to stick to.

Richard - CoCo is just beautiful! I grew up with goldens (my parents still have one) and all of ours always loved bathtime. They loved getting towel-dried too. Not a surprise from such cuddly, affectionate dogs. :goodvibes

Ugh. 12 hour travel day yesterday and up this morning to drop DOOD off at the Amtrak station for his month-long research trip. At least that means I'm up and awake to post the Monday Mixer question.

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

I know you're all ea-GEAR to share your knowledge about your favorite clothing, training aids and technical toys, so this week's prompt is:

Beyond the basics, what's your favorite/most-useful/most loved gear?

Of course, feel free to talk about your favorite shoes, socks, tech shirts or sports bras or other necessities. But I think we'd all like to know about that special something(s) that you've added to your "must have" for training, racing days, or just plain pleasure. For some of you, maybe it's your Garmin. Other, a special brand of sunscreen or a specific brand of water belt? Still others, a strategy for taping your legs and feet or a a favorite tracking website?

Please share your special finds with the rest of us. :thumbsup2

Here is a list of my must have's/ Favorite things when I walk out the door (in random order):

1: iPhone: not only does it play tuens but in case of emergency (like the small asthma attack I had last fall) I can contact someone for help.

2: BondiBand: I CAN NOT STAND fly-away hairs! They just annoy me to death!

3: Watch: Gotta love getting those splits!

I don't really use any websites for tracking. Just the DIS for encouragement and motivation! Thanks guys!

Good morning, O'Hana!!!

Did you know it's just 6 months to marathon weekend.

1. Okay, my favorite piece of equipment is for women only, if you want to know what it is, pm me. Or ask Jeanne. I shared the info with her, last year!

2. My next favorite piece of equipment is/are my Recovery Tights by Skins! I wear them on a plane and the day after the race and it really does help elminate the muscle soreness. Combine it with the stick and you got a combination that lets you race hard and play hard!!!

3. I also love my Omron pedometer that keeps me moving throughout the day AND my Garmin! I never leave home without them. The pedometer is downloadable to the computer so that you can track your level of activity over the course of time and print reports and can be dropped into a purse or a pocket and still get accurate readings! It's really fun on vacations!

For tracking workouts, I just discovered the Active.com calender! It helps you track everything, even on the free side AND it will make reports like miles and minutes!!!

See ya, Connie

Nikki, Do the Bondi Bands really work? Do they stay on? I like headbands but can never get them to stay.

My favorites/must haves are:
1. Asics Hera socks (I always like to have something Asics on; it's my little nerdy thing, because Deena Kastor is my running hero)

2. Nike + (I got it for my birthday and love having something more accurate than map my run or driving the car)

3. Running skirts (I only run in shorts when I'm running with sports bra as a top or not-quite boyshorts (really short running shorts) when its really hot)

Best,
Jennifer

Good morning and happy June, Ohana!

I have a comprehensive list of things I have to have when running, but not sure that any of them are all that cool.

1. Garmin - LOVE this for running outside so very much. I wish I had one of the pretty new "girl" style, but my big red beast still does the job beautifully.

2. Road ID on my wrist - gotta have it in case of emergency.

3. ipod shuffle, nike headphones, one earbud in, the other tucked safely away. I have the old style colorful clippie one - the new version makes me slap my head and say :headache: Doh! Why did they put the controller on the headphones. Idiot move, Apple.

4. Nathan water beltpack with water, sport beans if it is a longer run and always cell phone for just in case. I used it for an emergency pick-up for the first time last night. It got dark and was raining and my stomach was upset, too. SO glad I had that along. And that I'd put the phone in a baggie! Ha ha. And the water - I don't always need it, but there was one time I ran without it and I swore, I'd never go out without water again!

5. Smartwool socks. LOVE these little guys in the winter, especially but all year round, they are just such nice socks.

6. Visor (WISH or Nike) - it keeps the sun out, the sweat up and the rain off while letting my head breathe. I may look like a dork, but I do love my visors!

7. favorite sun block is the Coppertone sport spray. I love the way it smells.

With all this plus clothes and body-glide, it takes a little time to get ready for a run. I feel like such a geek - the minimalists can scoff, but I do like to be well equipped and prepared for anything!

Yikes! I feel very under-accessorized (if that's even a word :confused3).

I don't own a Garmin or even a sports watch, I seldom use my ipod while running, and I only use my water belt on really long runs.

But I do love my WISH hat and my black New Balance running skirt. :)

Good Morning Team O'hana!

I am more like Corinna - Garmin and Ipod is a must - not to mention water - even for short (3 mile) walk! And for other than races, the dogs accompany me - I find it more difficult to walk without the dogs, I just don't feel right if I do not have 2 leashes in my hands:lmao:

Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning, Cousins!

I had a decent workout this am, and I'm ready to Mix and Mingle! popcorn::

My favorite running items are my i-pod shuffle, bondiband (another endorsement, they are awesome!), Asics nimbus and runner girl socks. I usually don't bother, but for a race I cannot begin without my bodyglide ;)

Maria :upsidedow

More bondi band info -- I found these discount codes:

10% off entire order -- Runner
5 for $25 -- FIVE
Buy 3, Get 1 -- ONE

I just picked up 5 more -- gotta have cute ones for the upcoming vacation when doing my hair is way too time-consuming! :)

Hello Team Ohana! It's Monday and I'm ready to mix! :woohoo:

Here are my "luxury items" that I don't run without:

1) My Garmin 305. Yup, I bring it along for every run and bike ride, even if it is a big red beast. I even wore it during a local 5K yesterday.... and then got annoyed when I hit 3.1 miles before the finish line. :lmao: It's almost like a crutch, to be honest.... I like to know exactly how far I've gone, and can't trust that I'll pay enough attention to where I'm going to run a previously mapped route.

2) My German Shepherd. Don't leave home without it! :lmao: Jack is my faithful running buddy; he LOVES to run with me, which helps get me out there more often. He often spends the first few minutes of our run looking up at me and bumping my hand with his nose, as if he's saying "I'm so excited just to be out here; this is going to be the best run EVER!" I try to register for as many dog friendly local events as possible so that he can come along, as races are his FAVORITE THING EVER, and he is now recognized by name by many of the standard sponsor and organizer people. Yesterday, we ran the "Great Kilted Run" and he got to wear a tartan necktie in the race, and he got so much attention that he was just prancing! :rotfl:

And then there's the standard stuff: Thorlos running socks, my SkirtSports GymGirl running skirt, and SUNSCREEN. I have to wear sunscreen every day of the year (even under my clothing if I'm wearing light colors that aren't SPF protective) because I have a (mild, but getting worse every year) sun allergy and break into itchy rashes if I get more than a few minutes of sun exposure. :sad2: My current favorite brand is Coppertone Ultraguard 50+ spray, because it's so fast and easy to put on, and I haven't found that it misses spots like some of the other sprays do.

Hope everyone is having a marvelous Monday!

Sarah

Favorite gear?
Well, my Garmin 305 just gave out a week and a half ago, and I realize now how much I miss having it. I've never yet been able to get the Nike+ system to work right to track me through my iPod, making me miss my Garmin even more. Also these days I do not run without a technical shirt/shorts of some kind, and I have a definite opinion on the right kind of socks to wear (technical with a little padding in them--no thin socks for me!). Finally, I prefer to wear a visor over a hat, I just don't like the heat buildup that warms my head from a hat, and living in southeast Texas means I rarely have cold enough weather to worry about getting too cold.
