Super Goofs Flying into February team thread

My wife and I ran a small race this morning hosted by our local running club. It rained a little on the way but stopped shortly before we got there. It was actually around 60 degrees and muggy and windy out.

My 5.1-mile race started in a beautiful park for the first 1.5 miles. The remainder was through the nearby residential streets. I was running a near 9:00 pace when I hit a brutal hill. It varied between a 14% and 22% grade and lasted 1.3 miles (I love my Garmin!) I jogged for about half a mile but had to walk the rest until it leveled out. I ended up finishing with a 9:42 pace which was a little disappointing considering how well I ran most of it.

I just posted my time and mileage and doubled them for the race. Two weeks until my next race!

advice please...
I've been using an amphipod fuel belt for runs over 6 miles. I have the one w/the 12 oz bottle that sits against the small of your back. The last few times I've used it, I've had bad back pain after and the belt is the only thing I can think of causing it. I bought a fuel belt with 2 6 oz bottles to try instead, however, when I wear it, I get the same pressure point in my back, plus the bottles rub into me every other step. I tried putting it on backwards, so the bottles were in the front, and this was more comfortable, no pressure or rubbing. Is there any reason I shouldn't wear it this way? Or any other suggestions?

TIA

Hi Goofs!

Well, I am resting trying to cure my cold but I don't think my sinuses have completely recovered from the fall and I wake up every morning with intense sinus pain. Today it was better so we'll keep our fingers crossed.

I have to get running! The country Music Marathon is sneaking up on me and I am still struggling at 6 mile runs! Yikes.

Joanne - :grouphug: for the horse. I can't imagine how that feels. And as for what would I do? I would keep quiet and take the shifts as they come available. If she is THAT incompetent, she is going to be relieved when she loses the job. Maybe not at first, but eventually she will realize she was in over her head.

Steve- Hills are mean. Congrats on running the race though! And now you have something to motivate you all year - beating that time next year!

Lisa congrats on eating better! I like your whole approach, body fat and weight and managing eating! Way to go!

I got in 40 minutes on the bike, and about 50 on the elliptical and walking.

Total "distance" (in quotes since most of it was on the elliptical..no real distance covered) was about 5 miles.

Knee feels OK, but not great.

I probably need to take it slower and not delay the recovery.

Lots of yards on tap for 0500 tomorrow...

Mike

Okay, so yesterday I bagged on my LSD run after a mere 4.5 miles or so. I told myself I would make it up today, so earlier tonight I climbed onto the dreadmill and spent 17 miles running up a 2% incline. I wasn't trying for a specific time goal, so to spare my feet somewhat, I would run for 9 minutes, walk for 1. It meant more time on my feet, but I think the walk breaks spared my feet somewhat. Fortunately, I escaped with only a couple minor hot spots, though one may still blister.

Still don't have my logbooks transferred to my new machine, but that's my goal for tomorrow afternoon.

:stitch2: Monday Mixers w/ Team 'Ohana :stitch2:

I thought I'd let the Goofs know that Team 'Ohana is inviting their WISH family to come visit its thread on Mondays. We thought this would be a good way for people on the teams/threads to get to know other WISHers better. Plus, 'Ohana like to think we know how to throw a party and we always like new guests! The drinks are free, if virtual, and no one will tell you when you've had enough. :upsidedow

I'll post a reminder on Monday, with a loose question/discussion topic to get the conversations going. There's no need to stick to the topic, of course, as it's really your sparking, non-alcoholic but still intoxicating presence that is requested. So, if you have a little time for socializing with your cousins, please stop by 'Ohana on Monday! :goodvibes

We invite you to visit Team 'Ohana for the Monday Mixer! Stop by anytime today (or anytime, really) and say hi. The mixer starts here on the 'Ohana thread.

Our loose topic for 'Ohana's first Monday Mixer is "What song made you laugh out loud the last time you heard it?"

Of course, you don't need to stick with that prompt. You can talk about the last thing that made you laugh out loud, period. Or the Oscars, Nascar, Pixar. Or the meaning of life, the universe and everything. (Although we over at 'Ohana already know the answer is 42. You'll learn to love our geekdom. :rolleyes1)

Finally feeling better, not great, but better. Got on the bike tonight while watching the Amazing Race. Hoping to get a couple of miles walking/jogging on Tuesday as I haven't done anything in 2 weeks and am doing the ESPN 5K Saturday and the Princess 5K next Saturday. Yeah, I just want the medals!!

Got up, got dressed, got in my car...and drove to an all night restaurant to have breakfast.

i just couldn't FACE getting in the water at 0500 and 5 degrees outside.

Poop...now I've been awake for 2 hours, and still have to get in the water.

I hate falling short of my own expectations....

Mike: Some days are just not meant to be......I have been there. Yesterday's LR (10 miles) was the LAST thing I wanted to do. I did it, but it was cold and so windy.....kept thinking the whole time, "I wish I was taking a nap!" It's hard to overcome sometimes. Don't be so hard on yourself. Next time, you will get it done!

So, I did get my 10 miler in yesterday. I went to the local rail trail, since getting longer miles in at home is very difficult. Last weeks 8 miler was stretching it around my house. I knew 10 miles would be next to impossible. I like the 'mindless' running on the trail anyway....but boy was it cold and windy!

Morning Team!

Quick fly by right now.

Was going to go out yesterday for 10 miles however it was 12 with wind chill of 2. I don't think so. So climbed on bike and put in 25 miles. Wanted 35-40 but legs just were not having any of it. Some days it just does not come together. Tonight will be gym after work.

Mike - give yourself some time and a break if needed.

Have a great day!

Last nights run left me with a definite blister, which made this mornings 4-miler a bit tough. (The fact that my HR monitor kept telling me my HR was over 200 wasn't helping!*), but I finished it. Within a 14-hour period, I had a 17 mile and a 4 mile run, so I've decided that I have earned a nap this afternoon. ;)

* Sometimes my HR monitor lies to me. I know what a 200+ HR feels like, and while my legs were sore and the run was more difficult than it would have been normally, my perceived exertion was still only a 7 or so. 200+ is redlining, and into the 9-10 territory.

Just checking in as well. I managed 15.7 miles on the exercise bike while planted in front of the TV last night. I'm just heading out to do my 8M long run.

I know what you mean about motivation. I'd much rather stay warm inside reading Disboards all day. I can't use 5am or 5 degrees as an excuse. It's almost 11am and 40 degrees so I'd better get my butt out there.

Happy Monday everyone!

-steve

Got off my lazy butt and got in 2000 yards in the pool.

I came up 400 yards short on the scheduled workout but I just flat ran out of time.

At least most of the workout got done!

have a wonderful goofy night!

I've been resting the IT band, so not much for me to report. I did 30 minutes of Wii Fit the other day, stretched the IT band, and went ice skating (about 45 minutes). The best part was, I did NOT break my wrist ice skating this time! :cool1: It's my one-year anniversary of the ice skating fall that left me with a broken left wrist and sprained right elbow, so it felt good to escape the rink with no injuries this weekend.

Stressful day at work. I'm gonna stay a bit late and wrap up the millions of loose ends, but I think I will hit the TM before I go home for the night. At least that's the plan, if I can ever manage to stop DISing.

Mike, glad to hear you're healing. Take it slow and steady.. that elliptical is not a sprint!

Shan, I hope your recovery goes well.

Angie, I don't have personal experience with that kind of fuel belt, but I did hear an anecdote about someone who wore her water bottle in front for a race and had to stop at almost every Port-o-let. She didn't realize the effect it would have bouncing against her bladder. But if yours isn't hitting you there, I'd imagine you'll be fine.

Beth, if your brother and SIL graduated from PCPM in the late 1990s, let me know. DH was Class of 1997. I've been singing "It's a Small World" ever since reading your post!

Yay! I got my logbooks transferred to the new machine, and have updated them and the SuperGoofs spreadsheet. I am now current again!

Hey everybody! Sorry for the absence lately, it has been a crazy couple of weeks. Being that my wedding is just about 6 months away I am kicking into high gear with that. So much to do, I never in a million years imagined planning a wedding would be so much work! I am trying to do it little by little to get it all done, and it seems to be working so far!!

I have been working out, just not updating the spreadsheet, I will try to get to that in the next few days.

Sorry I don't have time to catch up with everyone, I just wanted to check in and let you know that I am still here and working out!!!

Keep up the good work Super Goofs!!!

Well folks, you can all say you knew me before I became famous! :worship:

I made page 2 of our local paper. Yeah, it must have been a VERY slow news day but our local run had a picture and blurb below it talking about our running club and this weekend's race. The picture is of me leading six other people. It almost gives the impression I was leading the pack and zipping through the course. No one needs to know it but five of those six runners ended up beating me! :lmao:

I finally got out and did my LR today. I did 9.2 miles in 110 minutes. It was nice and leisurely but fun.

Laurie - Congratulations on your wedding! We are celebrating our 10th anniversary this May and I remember the excitement of planning our wedding like it was yesterday. Enjoy this fun and exciting time! There really is nothing like it.

Angie - I use an Amphipod belt with the bottle on the small of my back too. I don't know if it's the same as you have. I don't experience any back pain but the weight is definitely noticeable.

I don't know how tight you wear it but I do notice it is very awkward to wear when it's not very tight. It tends to bounce up and down. I can see where this might aggravate your back.

I've seen Amphipod and other companies produce bottles that have snug sleeves that you put your hands through. I've tried them on in stores and they seem like you can comfortably wear them without gripping them. I imagine the weight can get heavy and give you sore shoulders though.

Good luck finding a good solution for you.

-steve

Angie: I agree with Steve, the belts need to be worn fairly tightly. I liked the Amphipod...until I tore the loop that holds the bottle in, and then lost the bottle :( I use a fuel belt now, but the one with four 8 ounce bottles that rest on the hips. Comfortwise, I like it much better and I'm carrying more fluid (which matters for a big fella)!

Today: Walked for 30 minutes, got in about 2 miles.

Ice and aspirin on tap for Mike.

Angie: When I trained for my marathon, I wore a double fuel belt (and carried enough stuff for 3 people in the pouches!) and my back didn't like it very much either. I would alternate drinking bottles, and when they became lighter, my back would feel better......and I had to wear the thing pretty tight too, or it would bounce around like crazy! Good luck with figuring it out!

Beth

Angie - I've got two amphipod belts, one with hip pack type pouch and one large bottle, the other is the system kind of belt (can change carriers, pouch, etc). You do have to snug it down but I've never had any problem.

"Steve? Oh sure I remember him, nice guy."

Mike - you are cruising, just be careful. Patrick had surger in Dec and sometimes still feels it (like last night when he pushed it).

Lisa - hello???? Wondering if you got hit with the power outages from the weekend storm. Hope all is ok.

Big HELLO to all.

Last night got in 40 min on TM then another 40 weights/core work. Ate smart afterward now having jambalaya for lunch....oh well Fat Tuesday only happens once a year. I'll just spend a little more time on the bike tonight.

Have a good day!
