Growing up I was never a fan of Sloppy Joes. I found this recipe posted on a cooking message board and absolutely love it!!!

BBQ Turkey Smokey Joes
(Rival's "The New Creative CrockPot")

3 lbs. ground turkey
1 onion finely chopped
1 green pepper, seeded and finely chopped
2 - 8 oz. cans tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 Tbs. cider vinegar
1 Tbsp. liquid smoke
1 Tbsp. Worcerstershire sauce
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1/4 tsp. garlic powder

10 onion sandwich rolls, split and toasted

Brown the turkey in a skillet and drain the fat. Place in the crockpot slow cooker and add the remaining ingredients. Stir thoroughly. Cover; cook on Low 8 to 10 hours (or on High for 3 to 4 hours). To serve, spoon turkey and sauce over the rolls.

Makes ten servings.

(Yeahrightsure!)

EDITED TO ADD: "For a 5,6, or 7 qt. cooker, double all ingredients except the ketchup, sugar and vinegar."

I just add a bit of brown sugar, worshestershire sauce, and steak seasoning to the meat while I'm browning it and than add tomato sauce.

We don't like our Sloppy Joes sweet. The way my family makes them is very simple:

Brown your ground beef/chicken/turkey. Drain grease. Add Lipton onion soup mix and tomato paste. Add water to make the consistency that you like.

I have started using ground turkey since DH's cholesterol went up. I add paprika when browning to fake a more brownish color.

I like homemade, but if I don't have tomatoes and peppers from the garden I can't make my own for the $1.35 pricetag on a can of Del Monte sloppy Joe sauce. It even as no HFCS.

This is a recipe from the CouponMom book....Brown a pkg. of turkey(chop up fine while browning),add chopped onions and cook until soft...then I add worchestshire sauce ,sugar, red wine vinegar, half of the tiny can of tomato paste, 2 cans Rotel tomatoes(if you don't like spicy use 1 15oz. reg ch. tomatoes)....grill the buns with a bit of butter, and enjoy....my teen who hates Manwiches will eat 2 of these every time!!!;)

I use the McCormick packets. you just add tomato paste and water.

Yep. I have tried so many variations and this is the only one I like.

DH's mom made them good, too. Just BBQ sauce and chopped onions. Put on bun with sliced pickles.

I came up with my own recipe when I ran out of Manwich many years ago.

I brown the meat and add in chopped green peppers and onions. Saute until they are tender. Then I add Sweet Baby Ray BBQ sauce and just a little bit of ketchup. I cook it for another 10mins or so.

Just for the heck of it, I bought a can of Manwich last year and made it for my family. We ended up throwing most of it out because no one liked it. We all agreed that it tasted like tomato soup with some meat in it. ;)
