And before that it was the recycled Mission to Mars attraction.
Much brighter themeing and the biggest special effect was there were pistons under your seat that pulled it down so you felt like you were feeling the g forces of take off.
Its one of only a few rides I remember from my first trip in 77.
I wouldn't go that far. There was quite an extensive refurb of the show elements between the Flight attractions and Alien Encounter/Stich.
Stich is much more of an overlay over the Alien Encounter attraction then you could say Alien Encounter was an overlay over Flight to Mars.
Lets see, here are some other nods/recylced elements you can see.
In MouseGears they have one of the Dreamfinder airships up on the wall.
You can still see the Seabase Alpha paint scheme over the Omnimover tunnel in the Aquarium in the Seas w/ nemo. (Obviously, they couldn't drain to aquarium to repaint the outter edge of the windows).
After the Latest Space Mountain (wdw) refurb, one of the items on the Baggage Claim conveyor has a "Mesa Verde" (horizons) sticker
The Butler and robotic Dog in the Space Mountain Exit vignettes have actually been with the ride since opening. First as a boy and his dog (w/ skin and clothes) in the original RCA house of the Future, and then later with the outer skins removed to showcase the inner workings of the AudioAnimatronics in either the vignettes, or at one time even holding a camcorder for the wall-of-tv's during the exit climb.
Horizons used to have a scene featuring a TV with a video loop playing of the Sherman Brothers singing "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" from CoP.
Mission Space you can see the old Horizon's icon on the space-station section in the queue area.
In the tree that was in Pooh's playful Spot at WDW (And now in the Pooh's attraction Queue) there is a knot in the woodwork that looks like the Nautilus sub from the 20k leagues attraction that used to occupy the location.
there are a few to help get things going....
