Pop Century Room Renovations

All of this has me certain that I will only ever get one stay out of POP. After this September if I don't stay at a moderate I'll be going to an AS resort

I guess that's the beauty of WDW - so many options. Some of the choices being made for these Pop rooms sure do change things up for a lot families, and not necessarily in a good way, IMO. But I guess I've been around Disney long enough to know that the only constant is change. :)

I guess I'm alone in being happy about these changes since it will be only my husband and I traveling for our first trip. There is no way we could both sleep in a full size bed together (we tried when we went to visit my parents last spring and failed). However, a queen sized bed will work wonderfully.

You're not alone! I happened to be able to stay in one of the test rooms for this update last year. We were a party of three and it worked out great for us. My only gripe was no carpeting. When we go back this November, we'll be a party of three again and I'll be requesting a renovated room.

I am super sad about the hardwood/vinyl. I may have to bring my own rug!! I hate putting my feet on a cold floor in the morning. I'm sure it will be much easier to clean. I think industrial carpet squares would have been a better choice. If one get dirty or stained, you just pull it up and replace it. I am looking forward to the murphy bed. When we stayed at Fort Wilderness a few years ago we all thought the murphy bed was very comfortable.

Also, it is going to make for much noisier neighbours. Shoes clacking around on uncarpeted floors overhead and next door will not be fun.

I'm right there with you both. While I love the look of hardwood and I'm sure it will be much easier to keep the hardwood/vinyl floors clean in the rooms, I think there are some negatives as well. I just think about my kids when they were younger -- we've always had the rule of "no socks on the hardwood/vinyl flooring" at home. It's just too slippery so we either wear shoes or walk around in bare feet to try and avoid slips and falls. But we also have the rule of "no walking around a hotel room in bare feet" so we spend a lot of time walking around in socks (especially in Disney where we all seem to kick off our shoes as soon as we get back to the room). So which "rule" do we follow in these rooms???? (First world problem, I know -- and it's really just a rhetorical question.) Fortunately, my kids are older now and *should* be old enough to safely walk on a hardwood/vinyl floor in socks without slipping and falling but if they were still little kids I would probably not stay in any of the resorts that have hardwood/vinyl floors. I can only imagine how many "lets see how far we can slide on the floor" contests there would be (followed by a parent yelling "knock it off!!!")...and no doubt several slips/falls resulting in head smacks and bruised tailbones. Not to mention the slips and falls when returning from the pool with dripping swim suits. I hope they leave a mop in each room.

And I also agree that this will increase the noise levels in each room. Not only will you most likely hear more "foot traffic" noise from the rooms above and beside you but noises within each room will be louder as the sound bounces off the floor, walls, & ceiling since there's no carpeting to absorb it.

That being said, I like some of the other changes that appear to be coming to the rooms and look forward to staying at the resort again some time in the future. But I do think the rooms look much more "adult" now...which is a contrast to the "fun" atmosphere of the resort which really appeals to kids (and kids at heart :) ). Not complaining, just observing.

Yay! Thank you again - I'll add to the chorus.

I love this idea just me and the DH traveling so having only one bed and a queen is so much better for us.

I'm looking forward to the Queen and the Murphy. The Murphey is perfect for one kid, and I don't mind to share (at least it's a Queen) with the other. Now, I've just got to convince someone there to put me in one of those rooms in August!

Like a few others stated, your not alone. I like most of the changes but I can see the pros and cons of the new design. I also understand that people might view the pros/cons differently, but I just can't see how some people who can only see cons. I guess some people just don't like change, but as the saying goes change is inevitably. If they don't like them they can always stay at the All-Star. Atleast until the All-stars have renovations that will probably be closer to the POPs :rotfl2:

I happened to be able to stay in one of the test rooms for this update last year.
WOW!How cool-I didn't even know they had Test Rooms for this project!

Please tell us all about the new rooms-especially if they do indeed have a Coffeemaker!lol:)

Thanks!

Yes info on the coffee maker may be my main concern now - sad I know but the DH requires it to function and in Disney I'm more hyper and ready to go than normal so it's more needed

I have a feeling that this is their demographic for this resort, but have the option there for 4 in a room as well.

BUT ......

If they build this stupid gondola that is rumored, that will cost a stupid fortune to build and operate, to service very few overall guests and include a landing strip in the middle of Hourglass Lake ...

If they are going to eliminate the Hotel Tiers and they will simply all have rates based on their location and amenities ...

Hotel rates at Disney will become a free-for-all and ... those on the Sky Bucket will have to pony up more for it's costs.

I predict that POP Century and the LM rooms in AoA will climb much higher than the Allstars.

Just thinking out loud :scratchin

Totally agree on the price change coming - thats when I may just stay offsite at Hilton and use/earn points for stays they have buses too just no longer include EMH but good planning can make due - especially if I am saving $$ and can always walk over to DS for nighttime fun

I am still just surprised they tackled three hotel projects at once on top of major HS work

There are photos floating around of the test rooms, either in this thread or in the main Pop thread, that look just like the room I stayed in. It's been a while and I apparently didn't take any pictures :scared: but I do remember there was definitely a coffee maker because we used it every morning.

I agree. I've already got my eye on a few Disney Springs area hotels that are cheaper, roomier, and include more amenities than what the value resorts offer in the same price range. The only thing would be I'd have to suck it up and rent a car which is something I don't want to do. But if prices skyrocket like I think they may with the new gondolas, then I'll just have to make due. On the flipside, I'll probably spend less time and therefore less money at Disney, so that's a plus for my wallet.

Was the Queen bed comfy?

I'm surprised that they're changing out one of the beds for a Queen size. Considering the sq ft of the Value resort rooms and that both beds are usually full sized, I wonder if there's even room to expand even one bed in there. I guess that's the murphy's bed purpose? To give more space so a queen bed can fit in there?

Not only a queen and a full but also looks like 3 nightstands. Adding one queen only takes 6" of width and there certainly was room for that there, but I think where you will see a big difference is a queen is 6" longer! The space will be there for you with murphy bed but losing 6" at end of regular bed is huge .... which is why I think the dresser piece that we haven't seen a photo of at the end of the bed/tv area will have to be pretty narrow.

The murphy bed is a standard full-size bed -- same size bed as what's currently in the rooms. Looking at the pictures of the sample room, it looks like the extra 6" of space for the queen size bed was taken from the nightstand/space between the 2 beds. There used to be a "standard" size bedside table there and in the new design there is a very slim bedside stand between the beds.

That was how I was seeing it as well. It looks like there will be much less room to walk around the beds when both are down for sleeping. There was a little room between the full beds and the door wall as well, that may be utilized. We haven't seen photos from every angle yet. I would like to see one shot from the bathroom opening towards the front window wall so we could see how everything fits in the room.
