We brought our laptop with us when we went to France last summer - it was more for the kids to watch DVDs (on rainy days). However, I have to admit that I got quite excited when I found out that the restaurant at the holiday park had free wi-fi for guests  After the kids had gone to bed, I went there for 15-20 mins to check my emails etc while Peter had his shower. Mind you, it did come in handy as we needed to check route maps and find out info on opening times etc. I would never do it during the day... only at the end of the day when there's nothing else to do (there's no telly to watch either) and it's still too early for bed. For someone like me, going without the net for 2-3 days is heck of a long time, let alone 2 whole weeks away! I'm sad, I know.

Glad to know I'm not the only one :lmao:

On the subject of delays etc, I find it easier to check the web the night before as reception don't always know the answers, though I do agree that if there is a problem then it's almost always easier to sort it by phone. I try to avoid using my phone abroad though, as the international roaming charges hurt quite a lot...

The other thing that I forgot I use it for which is VERY useful is online check-in for flights. I did that in the states when leaving Seattle and it saved so much time at the airport, plus I was able to secure decent seats :thumbsup2

I find i cope suprisingly well without internet access when im on holiday. Its the last thing on my mind really.

Not sure about coping without a telly though lol.

I wonder what people did before on-line check in was around....oh i remember go to the airport and check in manually lol.

im still one of those people :rotfl: i dont get how it works dont you still have to queue to hand in your bags?

Some flights I check in manually for (usually when it costs more to do it online or when I can't access a printer).

However, particularly on my outbound flights, I find it very helpful. I'm quite talk so it really helps being able to select my seat in advance and choose an aisle seat for the extra space. It's also nice that I can avoid some of the queues at the airport.

Yes but the process is generally quicker and it means you have a better say in where your seat is.

As long as i get a seat im not really bothered :lmao:

The Internet is handy but it cannot solve all your problems. People functioned normally without it before so why they cant now really defeats me.:confused3

End of the day i know what i would rather be doing with my time on holiday and it doesnt include going online to do whatever.

I agree with you Emma - the internet is very dangerous as people can depend on it too much and we should be able to live without it (even though I'm not sure how I personally ever did).

I find it very useful for a lot of things as I work with computers every day of my life and maybe that's why I use the web so much while I'm on holiday.

It has allowed me to do my Master's degree - that is completely online and means I can have a full time day job, then come home and do my degree work in the evenings, plus I never have to visit the campus. It also means I can write my dissertation without every stepping foot in the library as Google Scholar is such a useful resource for getting hold of textbooks, journals and papers etc...

It also allows people with like minded interests to meet each other - I met one of my best friends in Small World through here and yet would never have "met" her had it not been for the internet and this community.

It is also very dangerous though - I probably rely on the internet for things more than I should. If I get stuck with a work problem, the internet is one of the first places I turn and maybe I don't remember it so well because I know it's there on the internet if I need it again. There's quite a few other things I use the internet for that I don't really need to (news for example). Plus, I tend to use it out of convenience a lot - it's there and available to me, so I use it.

Oops - didn't quite mean to go on this long, but the internet's influence on modern society that I find quite interesting :goodvibes

You make some good points Rob.

But what i was implying is that i would never use up my holiday time to surf the net or chat to my friends.

But if thats what you want to do then, good on you. I would just rather spend my time doing other things.

I "panicked" when I found out that the caravan that we were staying in in Normandy didn't have a telly... then I found out that they all didn't have a telly! You're just so used to them (well, I am anyway lol) providing at least a small telly in the caravans/holiday homes here in the UK. Hubby & I actually had to chat to one another in the evenings :lmao: - we did watch a few DVDs as well as read.

Scary day at work today!!

A guy who works in the warehouse suddenly became really confused and dazed and unresponsive and jsut stodd swaying.

We panicked and called my Dad/Boss who drove over straight away adn tied to talk to him, but then dad got scared and called NHS direct who went through tests to do with my dad (for stroke symptoms and stuff I think)

Then they tried to talk to the guy on the phone but couldn't get anywhere so said to dad to get him to A&E straight away.

His wife arrived just as me and my dad got him into the car to go to hospital so she's taken him.

But it's so scary to see a normally smart, hrad working guy just completely switch off.

I hope he's OK! I can't stop thinking how his poor wife must feel - I wish someone would have gon with her to the hospital but she said she was ok alone....

Yes - it's only something I do when I've not got anything else I'd rather be doing which is why it's normally only at unsociable hours of the evening (I don't always go to bed until fairly late at maybe 12 or even 1). I guess I just run out of things I'd rather do quicker than you do :thumbsup2

Evening everyone - :goodvibes

Im just trying t catch up on all your chat from today

I think there's WiFi in the public areas of the DLH - wasn't A Small World DISsing there last week? A nice cocktail outside Cafe Fantasia......

yes you are right I was. Unfortunately it isnt free - I had to pay but it was worth it being able to chat to you all and report from the DLH. We take the net book with us

Evening all,
Ooh I see you were chatting about the internet earlier. I'm one of those folkes who takes their laptop everywhere with them! We always take it on holiday with us, mainly though to download pictures each night. In the summer Pete used the laptop on the flight to do his OU revision as all his notes and text books were on there, plus when we were having some down time he used it to continue working on his assignment. I like to do on line check in too and use it to check email if the hotel has free internet access. I am happy though that DVC now provide free internet when you stay on points at WDW (Disneyland already provide free access anyway to everyone), I like to be able to check my mail etc. Plus all my work is on it, so when I am travelling I can use the time to do lesson plans, prepare interactive resources for my lessons, prepare PowerPoints etc. I can live without it, but if I can take it with me I will!

Torsie, I hope that guy is OK, it sounds very scary.

Oh my God. I can't believe it. I've been waiting for one assessment to come back from uni this semester... I got a 75 for it, which means a first, which means I got a first overall for that module! Because of that and the high marks I got for the Animated film module I've pulled my overall uni mark up a grade to a 2:1!!! If I can just keep it up I'll graduate with a much better degree mark than I ever hoped!
