I do love the internet when I'm at home, but when we're on holiday, say in Cornwall, I don't miss it at all. When I'm at Disney, I do think of t'internet a lot, but that's because I am composing my trip report in my head. :rotfl:

My son has gone to Dundee all on his own. :sad1: He is going to the Uni open day tomorrow and it's too far to travel in one day, so he went today and is staying overnight in a Travelodge and coming back tomorrow. I know he's 16, but I am still anxious, as it's his first night away from home without either family or teachers. Well - first night on his own at all. :scared: :scared: :scared:

Evening all.

Took laptop for our recent weekend but balked at the hotel's £6/Hr charges.
Hoping to take it to WDW like Karen to download photos.
Have always liked the sound of Skype but think that it would be double standards if I used it. I have always ribbed OH for feeling the need to phone MIL while we are away.
I used to think this was a girls thing :rotfl: ;) My brothers and I used to give wrong number and destination to mother :rolleyes1 Why would we want to phone home or be phoned up in the middle of a holiday :confused3

Hope the chap in your work Torsie is okay :goodvibes

He'll be fine, i'm away on my own for the 1st time Mon-Fri for the next 6 weeks:eek: I have been away from home before but with friends & family. It was a bit daunting last night but I just kepp thinking one less night till i'm home for the weekend.

I'm at a Holiday Inn Express, i've paid £7.95 for 24 hours for the communication package, Its usually £20:eek: I only want the internet but i'm not going to pay £5 per hour which is the usual rate

I'm sure he'll be fine, but personally I'd be worried too. It's not easy letting them grow up is it ?
My DS almost 15 is only interested in animation, games design, that sort of thing and we've known from a very early age that he would eventually choose an "Arty" career. Miraculously we have by all accounts and according to their website a fabulous Art College 20 miles away and actually in the town my sister lives in so she may be getting a lodger in the next couple of years. :)

That makes me realise just how good the cost of the Orange Wifi at DLRP is. At €15 for 10 hours (valid for 30 days) it's not a bad deal really - that's usually enough to last the entire holiday for me as I normally spend no more than 1 or 2 hours a day online at most.

I'm sure he will be fine. At 16 my friends daughter flew to Hong Kong to visit her dad on her own. Her flight was early and she had ages to wait before a connection (she wasn't even flying direct) so she booked in to the club house and went for a massage!!

Ooh, I just booked tickets to see Bolt 3D on Saturday, we decided we would have a meal out at Frankie and Bennys afterwards too!!

I compromised when I went to uni - I lived away, but only one county north of home, with an easy train link back home. So I came home quite a lot at weekends during term time as it was only just over an hour from home by train.

I enjoyed living away, but I don't think I would have coped too well living so far from home that I couldn't pop back whenever I wanted.

It worked out quite fortunate really as I ended up coming home before I'd finished my course as I contracted pneumonia early in the easter term of my final year, so I did the last term and a half by commuting to uni 3 days a week for lectures and also exams when I got to those.

Tell me about it, I don't think that actually gives me 24 hours unless i'm here all throughout the day & i'm training 8.30- whenever

I wish they had a system like DLP, it would be better for me

LOL - that sounds like an ideal solution. My son has had one offer from a good Uni about 7 miles away and another from Dundee - a 9 hour train journey away! You can guess which one I'm crossing my fingers for. Although in fairness - judging by the amount of work he is doing for his finals, he will not be going anywhere in October, except to the JobCentre. :sad2:

Please don't worry Dundee is not so scary. Its a small town not anything like glasgow or edinburgh. I'm sure he is very sensible if hes planning on university. Dundee has a thriving student community and is a great place to study. Would you like me to pop into town to check he hasn't hit the pubs;)

Sounds fun. I love F&B's but I think after a week of eating at the baracks i'm training at & staying in a hotel I want a proper homecooked meal, my mum doesn't know that yet:rotfl2:

DLP do both - there's a 24 hour continuous option available as well, though I forget how much they charge for it.

Because it's Orange Wifi rather than DLRP specific though, it's a little more flexible.

The best value one they do is 50 hours for 50 euros which lasts 90 days, though I don't think I'd manage that long :rotfl:

The uni I went to was only 30 minutes drive from my house, but I still lived away! I liked the experience of living on my own, but I could get home very easily!! Plus I could work full time at my weekend job in the holidays!!

If you wouldn't mind. :rotfl: Actually his train is not due until 9 and he is under strict instructions to go straight to the Travelodge.
I did rib him a bit earlier - checking that he had his passport, phrasebook, foreign currency and his health insurance.

Oh my God. I can't believe it. I've been waiting for one assessment to come back from uni this semester... I got a 75 for it, which means a first, which means I got a first overall for that module! Because of that and the high marks I got for the Animated film module I've pulled my overall uni mark up a grade to a 2:1!!! If I can just keep it up I'll graduate with a much better degree mark than I ever hoped!

Bob xoxoxox

Well done Bob, that's great !! :thumbsup2 I got a 2:1 overall as well for my degree and it was/is a great feeling !! (I was expecting a 2:2.. or even lower to be honest lol).

I was wrong - his train got in at 8 - he's just phoned and is safely in the Travelodge, watching footy on the telly. Phew.

This reminds me of when I was first going for university interviews. We lived in Kent, so a bit of a palaver to get anywhere by train as you Kent-ites know! Can't remember which one I was going to, York or Warwick I think, but as I was getting off for a change of train, my shoe fell off and went down onto the track. You can imagine this was not ideal on my own for the first time, somewhere I'd never been before, on my way to an interview! Eventually someone came along and fished it out for me.

Sorry, shouldn't laugh
