OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I don't know if that is the case for marathon weekend since all the resorts provide transportation, but it was nice only waiting a short time, and even nicer that they had a nice air conditioned charter bus waiting when we walked up. Our bus wasn't full when we left, so I think another bus going to the YC/BC and BW was pulling up to park for awhile. I hope they do the same thing in January!

It depends on your finish time as much as anything. the goal is to have a bus waiting for the runners, not runners waiting on the bus. Generally, you will either wait a couple minutes if you saw a bus pull out for a bus to come in. Then a small wait as the bus fills. Generally, there is very little backup. Saying that, anyone who has been at the January event more than a couple times will have stories about transportation. The current design alleviates much of the issues seen on past years, but invariably, about 8:30 you will have a few routes backing up during the half. I have had to wait for 10-15 minutes during one event but generally am on the bus waiting for it to fill.

For someone thats new to this possibility...is there someone that could explain the first post? a goofy?? LOL...just some tips to someone that knows nothing!

I got the email and I'm actually considering it if I can get myself there physically!

The lol throws me a bit...

The first race at Disney was the marathon. Starting in 1994 and everyone received a Mickey medal who completed the event. In 1998, Disney added the half marathon to the weekend and both races were run concurrently. The award given to the half marathoners was a Donald head. The race went on until crowded became a real issue. For the 2006 race Disney split the races and the half was held on Saturday and the Full on Sunday. Several runners started asking if they could sign up for both. Disney hesitated for a while but in a press release announcing that they would recognized runners who run both races said something like, "" we have several runners who are asking if it is possible to run the half and full over the same weekend. While we think this is a little 'goofy' we will recognize these runners with a special Goofy medal. " There were 2000 in the initial class of Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge.

There is a subgroup of folks who also run the 5k on Friday. I attribute this to my friend Wendy who said that if it is Goofy to run the half and full it is Dopey to run all three.

Moving to this year, Disney added a marathon relay with Chip and Dale as the medal for finishing. I am thinking an appropriate name for those who run the half and a leg of the relay would be the Max group... in honor of Max, Goofy's son.

NOTE - with regard to getting there phiscally.... mentally is a bigger issue. The best way I know to commit to the physical is to commit to the mental... that would be submitting an entry form and creating the goal

THIS! :thumbsup2

My favorite running-related quote comes from John "The Penguin" Bingham:

"The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start."

I <3 him AND Coach Jenny! And I <3 "Marathoning for Mortals"!

On transportation, for 2011 we stayed at Saratoga Springs for the half and there were transportation issues on both ends. I was on one of the first buses out of the resort, but I heard that later people waited a long time for buses, because they kept filling at Old Key West. After the race, I waited in a fairly long line to get on the bus, and two buses filled before I could get on. I did take my time getting to the bus after I finished (in 2.20).

The point here is, get to the bus early on race morning, and build some time cushion into your schedule!

I signed up for the half. I did the full last year. I really wanted to do it again, but since I have no one to run with me this year, I decided on the half. The 15year anniversary pushed me over.

I am going to do Goofy in 2013. Now that we have the ChipNDale I REALLY want to do that too! I just want all the medals!

Ok, I have a question for the veterans. Is it possible to get the half done and get back to the room in time to shower before 11 check-out? I'd like to fly home that night but really don't want to after running 13 mi without a shower. This will be my first half but I'm doing a 10K in Sept so hopefully I won't be too far back.

Any input would be appreciated!

yes, you'll have enough time. what you CAN do is ask for a late check out and they may be able to accommodate you. i did that at the princess. they were able to give me a 1pm check out which i wound up not really needing but it was nice to not feel rushed!

staying hydrated is always very important but i especially needed it at the princess. i was dehydrated and experienced some stomach cramping which made me hang in my room a little bit more than i had originally planned. if you're on a time crunch, just make sure you drink enough so you don't experience any unforeseen belly issues!

I just registered for Goofy today, was planning on it, now just got to wait ~300 days till I get to run it!

It is official, I am signed up for my very first Marathon....and I am already scared to death :-). Got a room at Bay Lake and my race confirmation, now all that's left is a lot of injury free training!

Count me in! I just signed up for my 1st marathon! And my DH signed up for the 1/2. He registered last year but didn't run. I'm really trying to encourage him.

Amanda

I signed up late on the 14th. I rec'd a confirmation email. When I check for my registration on http://www.active.com/search_reg.cfm?EVENT_ID=1942156&CHECKSSO=0&SR_ID=35279 it doesn't show up. Someone else said that their name didn't show up but that was on the day they registered. I did a generic search for my state and names are showing up so it's not like no one is on the list yet. :confused3

When I checked, I was listed as being registered and I registered today for Goofy. So maybe you could contact them or maybe they havent gotten to it yet?:confused3

I just checked mine, and I don't show up either. I tried to even have another confirmation email sent to me, and it's says there is no registration with my email address even though that's the email address I got the first confirmation at... I wonder if it has to do with registering through the visa offer. I registered on the 14th as well...

Ah! That could be it!

I'm in for the Goofy too. Despite a knee injury I guess I liked doing the full marathon enough to do it 1.5 times again next year. I've got some races picked throughout the year as milestones leading up to WDW.

And if I get the Mickey, Donald and Goofy, maybe I'll have to think about the Disneyland half next year as well for the Coast to Coast medal. Hmmmmm.......

Good luck to everyone with the training.

I'm officially in for the marathon! I had a moment before I confirmed everything where I thought to myself, this is crazy. But now that I'm officially in I'm excited!
