I just joined Daily Mile...Taryn S. from PA. I have no idea what to do though! I'll have to play around with it.

I started C25K yesterday again. Felt really good after.

Taryn:

I'm not sure which taryn s is you. I'm elyn m from Atlanta. I just started C25k as well. Come friend me on daily mile if you'd like.

Hey Princesses!! I'm also on daily mile....Jessica Marie from Chicago, Il. How awesome to have two places to check in with you lovely ladies! :goodvibes
Jess princess:

Hi all!! My 5k was this Sunday!! It was rainy and cold, but we got out there and did it! I didn't realize how many hills there were, but I still managed to keep an 11:20 pace and shave :30 sec off my previous 5k! I know I pushed it, but I felt good afterward. It was for the heart association and my son is a survivor, so we were all very excited to be there! My son ran the kids 2k and got interviewed because he was one of the few child survivors running.

Unfortunately, I caught the stomach bug my youngest two were passing around later that evening and ended up kneeling at the porcelain temple all night, so I didn't get to celebrate much (it was my birthday too!!)

For those who were talking about Chi running, check Borders. I picked up Running for Mortals and a book on Chirunning for 50% off!

Congrats on your 5k and happy birthday! how long have you been training?

OK, so I just calendar mapped it out. I'm currently on week 7 of P90X (part one, finishing it next week as I'm going to New York tomorrow night), and should be finishing on May 14th. After that, I'll take up the Couch to 5K program, which should take 9 weeks.

Then I'll start up the Half Marathon training program, 19 weeks... So I'll be ready for a 1/2 Marathon (assuming I don't get sick or injured within that time frame) at the end of November. It sounds like foreeeeever! But I'd rather be thoroughly trained and confident than hurting myself on a real course. In the meantime, I think I'll try to convince my friends to run the Las Vegas Half with me... But February better watch out.

Princess Medal, you shall be MINE!

I updated my TR last night with race day, if anyone is interested. It's mostly just pictures. The link is below in my signature (39 hours).

Hi everyone. I joined the daily mile too. I don't know how to use it yet though. Looks like I would have to put my runs in manually since I switched over from Runmeter to runkeeper, but I really like the idea of having as much support as possible for this running journey :) I am Michele S. from Kalamazoo, MI

Late to this thread (as for most things in my life!!) but I am TOTALLY in! Just like childbirth - I won't remember any pain until January comes around again and I am trying to run 12 miles in all the crazy GA snow we seem to be slated for lately.

It was a girls only weekend and I loved everything about it. There is only ONE regret I have, and that's being too ambitous. It was my first half (the whole reason I even started running) and while I stopped to take plenty of pics, I was totally going for a time goal. I went with Julie (SaySay) who had been having foot issues and, while we agreed ahead of time that we would "run our own race", I REALLY wish I had stuck with her and not run ahead. It would have been much more fun to share that exp. with a friend, and I know she would have benfitted from a friend's encouragement. Crossing the finish at 2:42 was great, but after I got my medal it was TOTALLY anti-climactic. I was just walking around, by myself.

So if you really want to go for a time, I suggest doing a half right before the princess to get your "real" time. After that, it's all about friends and enjoying the moment!!!

Thus endeth the lecture!:goodvibes

Loved it!! I can't believe you did all that touring the day before!! :cheer2:

Congrats on your 5k and happy birthday! how long have you been training?

Thanks! I started C25K about 5 weeks ago from a "I HATE running and haven't worked out in the past year" place. I'm pleased with my 5K progress, but still really nervous about longer distances. I am all about saying to myself "Only ______ left to go" and 13.1 seems entirely too long to say that. I know we have time though!

Well, I looked around and found a site with a list of running podcasets and told my DH that lots of guy runners listen to these things while they run- there's even one called Marathon Talk Radio- right up his alley.:cool2: Hopefully he'll get some good tips from there!

Heading to the gym for the first time today since Sunday. My stomach finally feels settled enough to do some running- I don't mess around with puking:sick: .

Happy training everyone!

Thanks all for the dailymile idea - I just joined as well (Rachel W from Westport, CT if anyone wants to friend me). I was using another log, but was having some technical issues loading it in...so I kinda gave up on it for a after a month. dailymile looks way more user friendly..so I'll see if I can actually stick with it this time around.

Two questions for you guys who seem to be familiar with it..
a) is there a way to change the calories to reflect your weight/height/gender? After I put in my 4 miler from earlier this week, it's telling me I burned 519 calories. I wish that was the case, but the reality is I really only burn about 75 calories/mile. I don't need my log telling me I burned more than I actually did to to tempt me into eating something bad :lmao:
b) is there a way I can hook up my garmin 405 directly to it and it can get all the info off it? That would be very cool.

Thanks!

You can input your weight (by updating it from the add workout page), but not sure about height.

Yes, you can sync with Garmin devices. Here is a blog post that tells you how to set it up: http://www.dailymile.com/blog/features/how-to-garmin-sync

Also, I couldn't find you. I am Kathryn J from Durham, NC if you want to friend me, though. :)

thanks for the tips! I think paying attention to the data might really help me se where I need to zero in on my training

I added you - at least I hope it's the right Kathryn...we will find out soon enough I guess :lmao:

Haha!! It's the right one. :)

I like to pay attention to the data to prepare for races and potential finish times, and also to clue me in when it's time to give up on my shoes.

I am shooting for one a month. I already have March and April set. If I dont have races planned/goals set, I know I won't get out there like I should. I will make too many excuses. So, I trick myself . . . I'm so slick.

This is EXACTLY what I'm doing!! I have my first 10K since the Princess this Saturday and have already scouted out races for April and May. I know for a fact I would blow off training if I didn't have a goal, and I put in too much work for this year's princess to go back to sitting on my rear! I was even excited to find a 5K in May, near my late MIL's birthday, that benefits the ALS Foundation - that's what she passed away from. Hubby and I are going to do this one together.

I second this! You all that have ran the marathon and finish well have give me hope that it is doable!

Kappy, what kind of Brooks did you get? Oh gosh I was a kid in a candy store at the running store so much to get tech shirts, socks, did order a moving comfort bra, visor oh my hubby was like I better run something all the stuff I got to run:dance3:

I have to laugh! After I plunked down the cash for the race registration, my hubby told me that I was NOT going to back out of training, even if he had to get in the car and follow me, yelling, "Run! Run!" Investing in the shoes and the race TRULY invested me in training! And btw, I have Brooks Ravennas and I love them!

I just sat and pored through this whole thread just to catch up! (Thanks, Bob the Builder, for the peace & quiet!!)

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all since this was only my 1st half, but I was soaking up anything I could get from experienced runners last year, so I thought I would throw in some thoughts on some of the questions I read about:

Shoes: TOTALLY worth the $$ for the running store. And although my shoes were $100 in store, I've found them online for about 65-70 elsewhere. And if you are having some pains, before you ditch the shoes, I would look into cushioning inserts. I bought a pair of Dr. Scholl's Sport inserts at Target, for pete's sake, and they were AWESOME! REALLY made a difference.

Clothes: At first, I was tempted to spend so much on this stuff. NO NEED! I've bought several things cheap from Target - their C9 brand, and they've been perfectly fine. They have the dri-tech shirts on sale for $5-7 periodically. I also ran in their running skirt for the half and it was great - $20. AND, if you start running local races, you usually get a tech shirt with your registration. The only expensive thing I bought was a running hoodie from Nike that was made for 30 degree weather. And I had a $50 gift card for that!

I would agree with reading Runner's World. No need for a subscription, though - a good bit of their content is online and there is even a special page on their site for beginners. Great, encouraging stories as well as tips.

I love GU, but you have to find what texture works for you. My friend prefers the Clif shot blocks, but I tried those and was picking them out of my teeth for a mile!!! But I agree with those that have said you really don't need them except for long runs.

Also, especially to encourage new runners - the first mile (or two) are consistently crappy, no matter how long you have been running!!!!! There was a discussion re this on last year's thread. Don't get discouraged when you start - it still takes me at least a mile, if not more, to get in some kind of a running groove and feel a little more on "autopilot".

Thanks for letting me share all that! I started training for the 2011 Princess in July of last year. (Umm, July in GA? NOT the best timing!) But this board was a HUGE encouragement and source of knowledge.

Finally, I am Amy A from Roswell, GA on dailymile, if you see me friending you! Feel free to friend me, as well!

ok i'm officially obsessed with dailymile, where has this been my whole life? it's like facebook for running. just what i need, another running-relate site to help me procrastinate :lmao:

i friended whoever i could find...but feel too add me as well - rachel w from westport, ct

Hi Amy! Welcome to the thread. You didn't say where you are from, but I would be interested in a 5K to benefit ALS. My mom's friend was recently diagnosed with it and I'm interested in doing something that will benefit the charity. If the one that you are planning on doing is near me, I might want to do it myself.
