Also, especially to encourage new runners - the first mile (or two) are consistently crappy, no matter how long you have been running!!!!! There was a discussion re this on last year's thread. Don't get discouraged when you start - it still takes me at least a mile, if not more, to get in some kind of a running groove and feel a little more on "autopilot".

:rotfl2:I would like to second this thought. I have never run a 1/2 marathon or really anything over 6 miles but I can totally relate to this statement. I ran Cross Country from 3 grade through high school and I can remember every time the race first started out thinking, "I hate this! I hate running! Why do I do this to myself every year?!" But then you did hit autopilot somewhere along the way and it's really not as bad. And the cheering also helps :lmao:

Hi Amy! Welcome to the thread. You didn't say where you are from, but I would be interested in a 5K to benefit ALS. My mom's friend was recently diagnosed with it and I'm interested in doing something that will benefit the charity. If the one that you are planning on doing is near me, I might want to do it myself.

Hi! This is in Cumming, GA - north of Atlanta.

Doh! I saw you last post after I sent you that message. Maybe I can find something local for me.

Late to this thread (as for most things in my life!!) but I am TOTALLY in! Just like childbirth - I won't remember any pain until January comes around again and I am trying to run 12 miles in all the crazy GA snow we seem to be slated for lately.

It was a girls only weekend and I loved everything about it. There is only ONE regret I have, and that's being too ambitous. It was my first half (the whole reason I even started running) and while I stopped to take plenty of pics, I was totally going for a time goal. I went with Julie (SaySay) who had been having foot issues and, while we agreed ahead of time that we would "run our own race", I REALLY wish I had stuck with her and not run ahead. It would have been much more fun to share that exp. with a friend, and I know she would have benfitted from a friend's encouragement. Crossing the finish at 2:42 was great, but after I got my medal it was TOTALLY anti-climactic. I was just walking around, by myself.

So if you really want to go for a time, I suggest doing a half right before the princess to get your "real" time. After that, it's all about friends and enjoying the moment!!!

Thus endeth the lecture!:goodvibes

Amy you are so sweet! Look, I finished in 3:29 and seriously the end was anticlimatic for me as well...I think it was not well organized or something. I mean I crossed the line and then kind of stood dazed. Granted I was a little in shock I finished and in pain, but found the medals, got mine and started for the medical tent. I heard from Jackie - one of Amy and my friends - that she was at the family tent with ice for her knee. I though I would just use her ice...so I found my way out...seriously, was I stupid, got my photo and went to Jackie. I had no idea they had princesses past the family meeting area tents for photos.....never saw them. I DID have to go potty and let me tell you, the walk to the porta potties was LONG for someone who was limping...then again guess they didn't want to stink up the end of the race course.:lmao: Don't even get me started about getting out of that parking lot...what a cluster.

I do agree it would have been fun to finish with a friend and Amy all you missed was me making a fool of myself during the race...but hey, you got it at our MK post race celebration. I would have hated to hold you back. I was thinking though that Eve and I were totally about the same pace so I know what you mean, I COULD have run with her...but heck, again I didn't want to hold anyone back.

Agree though, its a fun race - injured or not. If you are doing it, take your time to enjoy all the entertainment you paid so dearly for in your race fees. There are lots of flat courses in the Southeast if you want to go for a PR....I ran Tybee Island 10 years ago...completely flat and my PR.

ANYHOO...

My blog has been updated with the 2nd half of the race if you are interested..... I had a blast. Its a wordy entry though, sorry.

I just sat and pored through this whole thread just to catch up! (Thanks, Bob the Builder, for the peace & quiet!!)

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all since this was only my 1st half, but I was soaking up anything I could get from experienced runners last year, so I thought I would throw in some thoughts on some of the questions I read about:

Shoes: TOTALLY worth the $$ for the running store. And although my shoes were $100 in store, I've found them online for about 65-70 elsewhere. And if you are having some pains, before you ditch the shoes, I would look into cushioning inserts. I bought a pair of Dr. Scholl's Sport inserts at Target, for pete's sake, and they were AWESOME! REALLY made a difference.

Clothes: At first, I was tempted to spend so much on this stuff. NO NEED! I've bought several things cheap from Target - their C9 brand, and they've been perfectly fine. They have the dri-tech shirts on sale for $5-7 periodically. I also ran in their running skirt for the half and it was great - $20. AND, if you start running local races, you usually get a tech shirt with your registration. The only expensive thing I bought was a running hoodie from Nike that was made for 30 degree weather. And I had a $50 gift card for that!

I would agree with reading Runner's World. No need for a subscription, though - a good bit of their content is online and there is even a special page on their site for beginners. Great, encouraging stories as well as tips.

I love GU, but you have to find what texture works for you. My friend prefers the Clif shot blocks, but I tried those and was picking them out of my teeth for a mile!!! But I agree with those that have said you really don't need them except for long runs.

Also, especially to encourage new runners - the first mile (or two) are consistently crappy, no matter how long you have been running!!!!! There was a discussion re this on last year's thread. Thanks for letting me share all that! I started training for the 2011 Princess in July of last year. (Umm, July in GA? NOT the best timing!) But this board was a HUGE encouragement and source of knowledge.

Finally, I am Amy A from Roswell, GA on dailymile, if you see me friending you! Feel free to friend me, as well!

Amy I'm not sure what my problem is but I'm pulling the blonde card today because I couldn't find you on dailymile. Look me up if you'd like Kelly C in Dahlonega, GA. I'm about 45 minutes north of you where 400 comes to an end... LOL!

Kelly - you already did! I signed up for the challenge you posted, so you got me that way!!! (And I was blonde when I was younger, so I have my moments, too!!):thumbsup2

I have to laugh! After I plunked down the cash for the race registration, my hubby told me that I was NOT going to back out of training, even if he had to get in the car and follow me, yelling, "Run! Run!" Investing in the shoes and the race TRULY invested me in training! And btw, I have Brooks Ravennas and I love them!

My husband told me I couldn't back out after only paying 20 for a local 5K. So that is why I keep signing up for 5Ks to encourage me to keep training. The funny thing (well it is funny now that he is healed) is the week before the last 5K I did he tripped over one of our dogs and sprained his ankle so he did not get to race. They did let him have the t-shirt anyways and he stood at the halfway point to cheer me on.

OK I bit the bullet and signed up for Daily Mile... I'm computer stupid for the most part so it's going to take me some time to get use to it all and find people. :rotfl:

Name is Julianna V (Tennessee) and I can't imagine that there are many of me out there.:rolleyes1 The picture I used is of my son and I very dizzy on the Tea Cups (of course at Disney World). :dance3:

I couldn't find you... I am Kathryn J in NC.

BTW I ordered new shoes yesterday! :woohoo: I went to the running store as the lady at my DH's work suggested and they helped me find a pair of shoes. I didn't buy them though because I was going back with a Visa Gift card but DH checked and he could buy them through REI sooooo $100+ pair of shoes ended up only costing $50!! :dance3:

Unless you're one of the top three finishers, honestly the end of a race IS pretty anti-climactic from what I've seen. No huge ceremonies. Get your medal (if they're given out), get your mylar blanket (same as above), if at Disney head to the medical tent if needed (I said if at Disney because I don't know how it works at other races...it was a bit further down at the NYC Half), grab your post-race food, get your picture snapped, etc. That's pretty much all you need. In almost every race I've been in, there are people ushering you along the way, but you do have to pay attention - they don't take your hand and lead you. Pretty much follow the rest of the people. :)

From the 2 previous half's I have done and a couple very large participant 10ks - larger than the princess, this is what I expected...but NO ONE was saying where to go and I didn't see signs. I just expected a LITTLE direction. Granted I was tired and in pain and it was so hot.

I will say the last mile was AWESOME with spectators and finishers encouraging us to the end. My only criticism of this race was the very end....from crossing the finish line to getting out of the parking lot!

 I had just the opposite experience...too many people telling me where to go and trying not to let me go where I WANTED to go! After I found my family, I realized there was a rip in the cloth my medal was hanging from so I had to make the trek back to that area to get another one...was stopped by at least 3 people and told I could not go back...I just held up the medal, pointed at the tear and yelled "I have to get a new one!" and kept walking...I'm really short so I can get lost in a crowd easliy...no one chased me down! :thumbsup2

What did you wind up with? I am always curious.

Yay, you found me on dailymile! :goodvibes

Does anyone know a good website that lists 10K runs - I live in Central PA and would like to do one or two this summer, but can't seem to locate any - I've 5k's and 1/2 and Full Marathons? Looking for something that my DD can submit her time from!

Another question - I'm looking for Disney tunes that have a good beat for running - thought it might help in my training is Disney is on my mind!

I ended up with a New Balance believe it or not. It felt the best on my foot and when I took a quick run outside (to give them a test) the heel was lower to the ground so I didn't lead with my heel like I tended to do in the other shoes.

One question - I've really been wanting a fitness watch, but I have very tiny wrists. For example, I'd like a Garmin 305 (recommended both here and at my local running store) but I can't wear something that big and heavy on my little wrists (to give you an idea, my wrists are less than 6 inches around). Any suggestions as to something I can use?

runnersworld.com has a race search feature. You can search by length, location, date range, etc. If she's looking to submit a time for a HM or FM, you could also look at 15Ks...that result (as long as it's certified and verifiable) would count as well.
