Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I try and get interested in this season and am having a tough time rooting for anyone person. Last night I thought Jennifer was the best by far. Most of the time I really agreed with Simon's comments. I don't make this season a "must see" like I did with the first two.

Forgive me, I haven't read entire thread, but I think Fantasia sounds like Macy Gray...anyone else agree?

Pam

With my very first post on this thread, I'm going to tick a few of you off, but I'll try to be nice

First, the good:

George - Someone mentioned that last night was "preachy", and I'd agree, but also say that is not necessarily a bad thing for the song he was singing. I'm a pretty big Elton John fan, and I think George probably did the most with the least last night, as it's not that impressive of a song, but he did it VERY well.

Fantasia - I wasn't all that impressed last night, but she's honestly the only one I can see having a real career in pop music after this competition. Think about it...would you be at all surprised to flip past MTV some day and see her on there ?

Diana - Probably has the brightest future, I'm just not sure it's in "pop" music. I think the best thing she could do (after high school  ) is head to Nashville. She will never be more than a sideshow in pop, but she could be a star in country.

LaToya - I thought she did VERY well last night, but I just think she's. wel, generic...There's nothing at ALL special about her voice or performances that I've seen. With Clay, Ruben, and Kim last year, all three had a "quality" that is tough to define, but you know it when you see it. Even though LaToya is one of the best singers this year (not saying much), she just doesn't have "it", in my opinion.

Then the bad:

Jennifer - Sorry, but having seen Elton sing "Circle of Life" and having heard it on Broadway, I was seriously unimpressed by her performance. Yes, she "belted" a few of the notes...and compared to her competition last night, she was middle of the road...but compared to a real performer singing that incredible song ? It's not even close...

Jasmine - Ok, here's where I start ticking people off  Um, has anyone ever actually listened to her sing ? Honestly, I've heard better at EVERY single karaoke competition I've ever seen. Seriously, I don't think I've seen a single performance out of her that didn't make me think, "what is the attraction"...I just do NOT get it...But then, my 3 year old likes her, so what do I know :teeth:

And the ugly:

Camille - The girl can't sing a lick..period. She's got a TERRIBLE voice. I'd rather listen to Brittany Spears, and that is saying something for me. She thinks she's Christina Aguilera, but as my dad used to say, she couldn't carry a note in a bucket :p

JPL - Or "The Hobbit" as he's known around our house...I get the impression that he's only kept around because he's "cute". I certainly haven't seen any real sign of talent, and last night was just HORRENDOUS. I honestly think I can sing as well as he can, and my perfect pitch in my ears tells me I'm a far cry from that in my voice:rolleyes:

John S - Could we please drop the Sinatra and Dean references ? Just cause he sings like a lounge singer doesn't classify him with those two...he typically sounds closer to Bill Murray in those old Saturday Night Live skits. If you want that type of music, listen to Herry Conick Jr, then tell me this kid even belongs in the same breath with him, let alone Sinatra or Dean.

Honestly, I think this season is just terrible, but it won't make me stop watching  I love the concept, and it's nice to see someone occassionally come out with a tremendous performance. It's just a shame that there's nobody there that you can depend on for that, like you could last year.

Oh well...now that you all hate me for playing Simon, I'll go back to lurking :wave2: Just wanted to add my $.02

Man what an aweful show last night.
Thank goodness for George!

And if I hear Fantasia end one more song with her "yeah, yeah, yeah" thing I think I will scream :earseek:

wvrevy: if you'd said that last year about Clay, Ruben or Kimberley, you'd have people up in arms.

This season, there's nobody even close to that level that anyone cares about, so feel free to critique away! ;)

Yeah, but I wouldn't have said that last year, 'cause those three were actually talented:smooth: Oh, I'm not a big fan of Ruben's, but that was more taste than anything...I always knew he could sing , even if I didn't like his voice, per se.

Oh well....Maybe next year, right ?

PS....I agree completely with the "yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah" thing at the end of Fantasia's songs...Can't figure that one out

The girl has everything to win this competition. First, and foremost, she can sing!! She has TONS of confidence and personality. I do agree she has to lose the yeah yeah yeahs at the end of her songs. That's gettin' tired...

Last night was pretty bad as usual, which just confirms that Paula and Randy were completely wrong in saying this year was the best top 12.

I thought the only one who did really good tonight was Jennifer. I was kind of already excited because I was waiting for someone to sing that song and I'm glad she did. I thought she did a really good job with it.

I honestly didn't think Jasmine and John were that bad, but they got some bad comments from the judges. I heard a couple little off notes from Jasmine, but other than that I thought the rest of the song was pretty good. And I'll admit that last week John wasn't that great, but I didn't think he was that bad last night! I actually liked his performance, I thought it was fun to watch.

JPL, Camile, and Diana were HORRIBLE! I thought JPL was going to get completely torn up for that, but they only said it was average. Camile's voice is really getting on my nerves and I wish she would go soon. I've never liked Diana and she was definitely at her worst today. And it really bugs me the way she acts like she's all that, especially the way she went into the audience and everything.

Latoya and Fantasia were just blah, nothing exciting.

And George, I honestly thought that the judges were gonna give him bad comments tonight! But then again, that's what I think every night. His voice is so scratchy and deep, and it seriously sounds like he's singing the same song every week. His voice just irritates me and I don't understand how they could like him!

As for the bottom three, I honestly don't think it will be John, JPL and Camile. Maybe one of them might be there, but they all have too much of a fanbase to all be there. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Jasmine, Diana, and between Latoya/Fantasia/Jennifer.

What a train wreck!

Fantasia - sang well, except for the ending (yeah, yeah, yeah)

JPL - ugh!

Camille - agreed with Simon, somewhere in Vegas a tv would be thrown out the window. We just rolled with laughter on that one.

Diana - she can do better

LaToya - she, too, can do better

George - great but for the bouncing

JS - didn't see much of his because of a weather report so can't say

Jennifer - liked it but....

Jasmine - can do better. Agreed with what Paula said about she needs to break it up

I'd love for them to do Disney movie theme songs.

Yo, yo, yo! (Just an irritating Randy imitation to get your attention ;) )

I like George's bouncing - it's different and gets him noticed.

I like Fantasia's "yeah, yeah, yeah", but I can't stand her.

I too, wish Diana would stop all that audience schmoozing. It's sickening.

Wow, was last night's show painful or what? Some of those performances were absolutely horrendous. I agree with the others here. There is no breakout star on this show so far for me. I had my favorites (Kelly and Kimberley) at this stage of the competition last year and the year before. This year, I keep thinking, so what.

In regard to this week's show, If Camille, JPL and John S aren't in the bottom three this week I will be completely convinced that this show has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with fan base. As I was watching John S performance I kept thinking that he picked that song and was singing it as he was because he wanted to go. Even Sir Elton commented that the song could backfire on him and it certainly did. Camille's performance was quite literally painful to watch (said with a Simonesque british accent.) She looked like she was in pain singing it, it was painful to listen to, everything about it was ghastly. JPL's charm in his silly behaviour has worn off, it is just irritating now. that song choice was horrendous for him as well. The falsetto was off and the whole song didn't work. Fantasia could be the best singer out there, better than Kimberley Lock and Kelly Clarkson combined and I still don't think I would like her. Her attitude is wretched. I like George's voice, but his bouncing and facial expressions have to go. My favorite performance last night was Jennifer's. I know a lot don't like her, but I have liked a few of her performances. I think she has some potential if she can curtail some of the theatrics and while she has attitude it doesn't sicken me in the way that Fantasmic's does.

Someone mentioned that Fantasia (say it Fan Ta Zee A like Simon)
sounds like Macy Grey or is Gray..not sure. I agree...and I never understood why everyone thought she was so good either.

It will be interesting to see who in the bottom 3 tonight. It should be the 2 Johns and Camille. I think it will be Camille, Diana and Jennifer...with Camille gone (we can only hope!)

I also think this season is, not only NOT the best, but could very well be the WORST. The worst part is, with the way things are going, people like John Stevens could be in it for the long haul while people who are less painful to listen to (Jennifer Hudson) will get booted off week after week. I'm finding myself dreading Wednesday nights because I can't not watch, but I just know it will lead to irritation.

Having seen this, I wish I was under 25. I sing in the car and I'm not half bad. I would have had a shot this year!! :bounce:

I don't know, I'm kind of enjoying this season. I'm not rooting for anyone in particular and it's kind of interesting that way.

I am starting to wonder about George though. He bounces funny but I like his enthusiasm and he seems to get better each week. I don't know what happened with Jasmine but hopefully she'll be way better next week. Jennifer sounded good last night.

As for who should go, it's hard to pick just one.

The downside of tonight is that we have to listen to the person voted off SING again! Why can't Simon pick who to sing again, at least it would be enjoyable! As much as I want to see Camille and the Johns go, I can't fathom listening to them butcher their songs again!

Can't we just have George, Fantasia, LaToya and Jasmine sing from now on? Of course I do have to admit that Jennifer was good last night, but her facial expressions drive me crazy!

Here's to a frustrating night. John Stevens better be in the bottom THREE...

Yeah, Buffalo is now famous for WIDE RIGHT, NO GOAL and John Stevens!

Last night's show was just AWFUL. The only good perofmances of the night were George, LaToya, and Jasmine. In fact, I think that they are the only talented ones this season, along with Amy. It sounded like both Fantasia and Jennifer screeched both of their songs, and how could Jennifer pick such a great song to ruin? As for John Stevens, this was one of his better performances, although he is definitely better at Sinatra-espue songs. His voice is too much of a crooner type of voice, and he really can't change it too much. JPL and Camile were just horrible - they both should have been gone by now. I hope Camile goes tonight because I am sick of having to listen to her awful singing. This group just isn't nearly as talented as last season's. I really can't see any of them becoming stars after the competition - including the few I said that I liked in the beginning of this post.

Oh boy - hold on to your hats folks!

I just got the lowdown from my DD (almost 15 yrs. old) and she said that JPL is the guy she and all her friends want to win. It's his looks. OK, there you have it. The formula to win AI. Look good and the teenage girls will vote for you a million times.

Interesting on the JPL/Looks comments. I know America seems to love him, but when I look at him, all I see is DORK!

Does anyone know why they have drawn out tonights torture fest into 60 minutes??

Erika

I seriously don't think I can stand to listen to Camille sing again. I had to leave the room last night night while she was butchering a wonderful Elton John song.

JPL annoys me. He has since the beginning.

Jennifer has a good voice but I hate when she gets that -bug eyed staring off in the distance- look in her eyes. It's weird!

The Red-Head--Urrgghhhh! Why is he getting votes?

Me too. But then again, I'm old, so what do I know? ;)
