Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I've been thinking about it, and when it comes to being a singing star, is it really ALL about the singing? I don't think so. Isn't personality and an ability to connect with the fans a very important thing? Of course it is. So, really, even if John Stevens and JPL aren't the greatest singers on Earth, maybe it's their ability to connect with some people that's getting them through. I think maybe we need to start looking at that a little closer.

I mean, think Britney Spears. She's pretty, she's a good dancer and she knows how to command an audience - but IS she REALLY a good singer? Her voice is so doctored by computers that I'm not sure we'll ever really know what her voice is like. I've seen old clips of her singing at state fairs and such, and she isn't anything special without the technology helping her voice. I don't think in today's world, that having an amazing voice always counts for much. Sad, but true. It's all in the connection with the fans. SOMETHING is working for our friends JS and JPL, and as Simon said "people have the right to vote for who they like" - and that's exactly what's happening.:D

I totally agree grinningghost. People buy albums because they like the personality. Simon was correct in saying that people vote for their favourites.

I still think that it doesn't really make much difference until there are about 3 people left. Who goes when is not important. The top ten will be on the idol tour.

I thought that when Simon was singling one out, he meant that one of them knew that they shouldn't be there and he meant Camile.

Without a doubt. And she knew it too.

I wonder if that's why he was the only judge who had nothing to say to Camile at the end? I thought it was odd that he wasn't even given a chance.

And why did Paula disappear for a few minutes?

I know Camille isn't the best but I still got teary eyed tonight watching her farewell tape and seeing her be so sad. She still sings about a million times better than I do!

So, neither of the 'Jo(h)ns' where in the bottom three? That is laughable. Both of them have been horrendous. I agree with Simon 100%... This is what you get when you let America chose. I can't say I am displeased about Camille's departure. She has been repeatedly terrible the past few weeks and a couple of the ones already booted off should have been there longer than her.

don't you think JPL should have sang Crocodile Rock....and John Stevens Rocket Man? I think that would have been a much better fit.

I LOVE George and I am rooting for him to win the whole thing. Fantasia irritates me...there's something about her attitude that is just not right.

The rest are just average and Camille deserved to go a few weeks ago.

I'm with you. George should take it all, and I think the reason Fantasia was in Group B with the JS and JPL was not due to her bad singing - it was due to her personality. If she would stop being such a wiseacre, that would seal the deal for her because she has a great voice. But I think that's just the way she is, and it's probably going to work against her.

I don't even know if Group C was the highest vote-getters. It seemed like they were because they were the first ones to be safe, but they never said anything about who had the most votes. It could have been that Group B had the highest votes, but since Group A had Camile and Group B had JPL and John, people wouldn't know between Group A and B which was the actual bottom 3.

If you take into consideration that John Stevens and JPL have both beaten out George before (John in the 4th group of 8, and JPL in the wildcard), Jennifer Hudson has been in the bottom 2 twice, and Latoya was in the bottom 3 last week, it would make sense that Group B was the highest vote-getters.

Ryan did say group C got the highest amount of votes, it was quick, but he said it.

This Idol 3 is turning into a joke as far as I'm concerned. The level of talent and maturity is sooooo low as compared to the 2 previous Idols. Instead of staying glued to the show, we switch over at the end just to see the synopsis of songs, rather than sit through the entire painful show.
That the 2 Johns are not in the bottom 3 votegetters is proof that America may be stuck with one of them as the Idol! Did you see both of their body language while they were waiting?? They looked like the executioner was coming, certainly not the stage presence they should be maintaining through every minute of the show.
Yes George can sing, but he reminds me of "Hercules man" from last season (can't remember his name) and he was gone in another couple rounds.

Too bad. but Idol seems to have overstayed it's welcome.

I also missed the first 1/2 hour of the show as I turned on the TV @ 8:30pm. I was dreading an hour show anyway, so it worked for me missing that 1/2 hour.

I did like the format of having them in groups of 3, sort of gave you an idea of the voting.

I was glad Camile left and it was so painful to watch her sing again. At this point, I wasn't surprised that John S and JPL were safe. This is becoming a popularity contest not a talent show. I still do not have a favorite, so I have focused more on who needs to go than who should stay. The bad ones outnumber the good at this point.

This is such a train wreck of a show this year. And like a train wreck you just keep watching even though you shouldn't.

Silly me - I have been looking for a good place to discuss Idol, and I never thought to check the CB (been spending way too much time on DB). I'm so excited to have found this thread!!

Anyway, I am so glad to see that many of you agree with me on the Johns. I can't stand to see them anymore.

But I was surprised to read Pig Pen say the rest are "just average." (BTW - I've only read this page - didn't have time to read 60 pages!). I think LaToya is awesome, and Jennifer and Diana and both pretty great too.

But America has a different view of things than I do, if the votes are any indication. But I guess I learned that last year when Rueben beat Clay.

Was anyone else as impressed as I was with Tamyra? She looked beautiful, sounded great and was so far above anyone left in this competition that it was sad. I can't believe she came in fourth!

There were so many people let go from the final 32 this year that I think should have stayed, Katie Weber comes to mind. I'm with those who say that I'm rooting for who should go, not who should stay.

I agree about Camille needing to go, but I felt bad for her because Simon singled her out and she was so emotional.

It really isnt' her fault that she is still there - America votes. She knew she wasn't the best - but what should she have done - walked out????

I think that George, Fantasia, Jennifer, Jasmine & LaToya are all good, just good a different styles. The others remind me of a high school musical.

I hope everyones singing gets better - Tuesday's for the most part have been really painful to watch. You just feel bad when they get finished and have to hear the judges cut them up so bad, even though they are telling the truth.

So Camille is gone. Her personality just didn't come out in her performances. You could see some of it in the Ford commercials. Too bad. She always seemed to pick songs that started out so low, she seemed to be scraping the bottom of the barrel to belt them out. Her song choices was a part of her downfall.

I agree with another poster that Crocodile Rock would have been a better song for JPL and how about Daniel for JS. What little we heard on their song melody last night was a lot better than his performance on Wednesday.

Fox probably had AI start at 7:00 because of The Swan was airing at 8:00. Also, they have to get their numerous Ford commercials in there.

What did ya think about Tamyra Grey's performance? I kept thinking "Whitney Houston" want-a-be. I've always been a fan of hers and think she got the shaft in AI 1 but......

I can't say I felt bad for Camille. My reason is that they know this is a show, they know hurtful things are said, they know it's a competition and they know if they are good or not. They also are on TV, they get all kinds of offers, they get to live in a mansion, they get to cut a CD and many other perks. So, what is there really to feel bad about. In the real world when you go on auditions, they are painfully critical, not unlike Simon, maybe even worse and no perks. So if you look at it that way, it's not a bad deal.

I thought Tamyra was stunning. She looked beautiful, sang perfect and has such poise. I never thought to compare her with Whitney Houston. I have never liked WH, and Tamyra is worlds above her IMHO.

The more I listened to Camile, the more I thought she was going for a Mariah Carey sound. Her voice reminds me of MC's, but MC has so much range and Camile just can't take it too low or too high. I wonder if she'll take Paula's advice and move to LA and try to make it.

Did anyone else notice the communications between Randy and Simon near the end of the show? Eye contact and verbal (although they didn't broadcast what was said). It definitely looked like there was some tension between the two of them (regarding Camille? - I'm not sure).

It was also very strange for Simon not to be heard about Camille and her future, and for Paula to disappear. Weird show!

I didn't like Camille's performances, but I thought that Simon's comment on Tuesday night about "somewhere in Las Vegas, a television set is being thrown out the window in Elton John's room as you butchered his song" was just cruel. No need to go to that extreme.

(Edited to correct a spelling mistake!!)

Yeah, I thought for sure JPL would do Crocodile Rock!
