November 12, 2005....7 Night Eastern...Who Else?

Every time we get off the ship there is buckets of food that people try to take off with them. I have wrapped things up and hidden them in the bottom of the big bag I use for Haley's diapers and other essentials and was fine. The worse they can do is make you put it in the buckets before you get off the ship!

Yes, Choc_marg, but I do set a nice table and entertain kids. At least you don't have to eat my cooking! The smoked turkey is sooooooo much better. Thanks awoltoday for that.

the big issue is when you disembark (back on u.s. soil). they want to make sure that nothing (as in "little critters" in produce) gets onto u.s. soil. we realy experienced this when we went to hawaii 12 years ago. california had been getting warnings about the "med fly" and the consequences of it's presence-but we did not fully appreciate it until we observed it in hawaii. we would see these little gnat like bugs covering tables, swarming garbage cans (they even got into the soda lines at the bars-UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!). that's why no matter what island you fly out of in hawaii-you have to do a lay over in honolulu for bug spraying before you reenter the continental u.s.
b.t.w.-best ever hawaii souvinees - our dd  and 100% kona coffee (still have the name for the place we got the coffee because it's cheaper to order by mail than the lousy blends they sell here-our luggage still has a lingering coffee aroma from the 10 pounds we brought back :) ).

i've never tried to take any food off the boat in non u.s. ports-we usualy eat before we disembark. in fact-the only port i recall eating in was "cozumel"-we went to the hard rock cafe. i remember it well because my dd decided to stay in the kid's club so only ds came with us-it was soooooooooooo hot, dh and i decided to order mango daquires, we ordered one for each of us (myself, dh and ds-less than 3 at the time) and told the waiter one would be for ds. when we got them all 3 contained alcohol :earseek: . when we pointed this out to the waiter he shrugged and said "you need to let us know if you want a "virgin" for the kids". o.k.................................i know the drinking age is relaxed outside the u.s. but..................
the only other thing we had in port was the free cans of diet coke they hand out in the shops (well worth browsing for, in addition to getting the freebie stuff they give out with the coupons from the ship).
they may be getting tighter on taking food on and off the ships due to that virus (can't remember the name of) that has occured on many lines-when we did alaska last year we had hand sanitizing stations in all of the food areas as well as when you reembarked from each port.

o.k.-so i recognize (and confess i am also one of) the "choc-o-holics" in this group. but are there any non chocolate, sweet lovers in the group? i ask because the "jelly belly" factory is near by, and we get the benefit of "belly-flops"-all the non perfect jelly bellys that cannot be sold to the public because they are not "jelly belly perfect". yup, all the jelly belly goodness at next to nowhere near the price :Pinkbounc if there are any of you that would enjoy some-let me know, i will grab some to share

chip&dale&fun-hubby have any secrets for cooking turkey? i stuff mine with cut up apples and oranges-gives a nice taste to the bird and ends up nice and moist. i still get crazy looks when i say that a turkey is one of the easiest weekend meals-hey, just put it in the oven, occasionaly baste it-much easier than many dinners i can think of (save delivery :teeth: ).

Be careful eating and drinking on the islands. Not that we are going to Mexico, but Ben got VERY sick off of beer that was on tap. I wasn't with him to warn him and boy oh boy was he one sick puppy.

The name of the yucky virus is the Norwalk Virus. You will sign a form before boarding stating that you have not been sick for 72 hours. I have had people say, "well I was sick 2 days ago and now I am fine" and be denied boarding on other lines. Not a nice situation - so everyone should be taking their vitamins now with extra vitamin C! :teeth:

STB on the Beach....just so curious as to ask what is life like in your immediate surroundings? Wet? Dry? Wind blown? What are you guys busy with rebuildng the damage? What are the magority of the people in your community facing?
Do tell!.....so interesting to us Americans thousands of miles away!

We truly hope all is well. :flower:

Okay...here's something I thought would never come up on this thread....."tis the season to start a new episode of SURVIVOR! ;) :goodvibes :cool1:

Who will raise their hands right now and say, "yup, I am a Survivor fan?" :confused3

If you are truly committed and totally into it like myself, please PM me about an address of a friend of a friend of a friend who you can mail $5 to after this week's opening show and pick the 5 jury members and the last two standing for up to a $300 pot of cash at the end......the more we get the funner it becomes! The guy running the pool is a hoot! Worth $5 for the weekly emails you get on the updated stats amogst the group!

I almost won last season.....had guessed the last two top people....just in the reverse order. It didn't matter though, the participants who were most correct about the top 5 jury spots ended up winning the cash! :rotfl2:

OK. I am totally engulfed in work right now, but I HAD to respond to this...

I have watched every Survivor series and am also involved in a pool. Ours has over 150 people & is $20 each, but is based on when every single person gets voted out. It is really cool system. We end up with 2 winning pots. One for those who are closest for the whole season & another one for those that are closest from the merge on (we get to do a repick partway through). But, the person who runs the group is not just a friend of mine, but she's also Jeff Probst's Mom! Unfortunately, he doesn't give her ANY scoop beforehand :(

not a survivor fan, but it brings up an interesting question- what are your "i must tivo these shows while on vacation" choices?

for ds/dd-their opinions don't count, they get disney channel all week on the cruise :)

for dh-all the sci-fi channel stuff he missed when our satelite was sick :guilty: and "charmed".

for me-well, there's not enuf room for all the court shows so i will have to settle for "nip/tuck", "boston legal" and "grey's anatomy", "wife swap" & "trading spouses" (note: not all californian's are as flaky as the folks depicted on this-just most of us :earboy2: ). all the rest of my (guilty pleasure) lousy vh1 wanna-be reality shows will be over by then.

so what's your pick?

WOW! That is too cool! :cool1: Jeff's mom? :cool1: Survivor is fun, huh? I have had a few friends of mine try to talk me into trying out for a spot. I cannot imagine leaving my family for that long and the consuming of bugs or cow's blood just does me in right there....would much rather indulge in Palo's chocolate souflee! :rotfl2:

If by chance you want to participate for $5 chance at a few more hundred dollars pot, pm me with your info. In fact, the pot thickens as we speak.....our pool spans over three Northwestern states and is growing larger by the day! :goodvibes

Please share ....we love Hawaii and I adore Kona Coffee – We have stopped at several plantations and the coffee tastes different each place. Of course, it is not Kona, if it is grown on Kauii.....

We will have many Hawaiian stories to share on the cruise as well....We have been fortunate to have visited three times....toyed with the idea of moving (in my dreams) ‛till I realized I would be too far away from Mickey.....the cost of houses, oh yes, that too.

TURKEY - TURKEY - TURKEY

DH has always been in charge of the turkey, from the 25 pound ones we used to roast in the oven to the new 12 pounds that he does on the grill. I love using the grill for the turkey because the house does not get so warm, and when it is 85 on T-Day, this is a big thing. You also get to use your oven for something other than the bird.

As for sharing recipes, I would be glad to but a conversation with DH would be better. He grills two ways, the "beer up the butt" approach and roasting on the spit. He is a big fan of marinating the bird, but what goes into the bag is anyone's guess....I am not so sure he uses a set approach. Plus, he often uses the marinade instead of beer for the grilling.....He does include apples, which at times get spewed over the grill - oh well, and wine, garlic, celery, onions, carrots, lots of fresh herbs, pepper and as I said, who knows what else. But - he would love to share on the ship, I am sure....can't get him on the boards yet.

He has a great way of cooking sweet potatoes that my Mother adores....just soak them in water for 1-2 hours (?), and then butter them and place them on the grill...I'd better confirm this with him....But the result is spectacular....Mother requests his sweet potatoes all the time now...

Have to admit that I have never watched a full episode of survivor.....Nor Desperate Housewives, nor CSI.......better stick to "talking turkey" with us.... :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Can we cruise NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can see it now: "Survivor 12 - Castaway Cay" Where contestants will be forced to live off of Chocolate, Turkey, and Margaritas...

I'm now an F/X junkie - The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me, Over There. The only shows I watch on network tv: Housewives & Grey's Anatomy. And I've never once watched "charmed" (that you can prove). I'm also ashamed to admit that I'm also hooked on VH1's Surreal Life, which is absolutely hilarious.

BTW.....that scary face by your signature, awoltoday, is absolutely frightening! It took me years to get faces like that out of my dreams after watching all those horror flicks (Freddy kruger and the gang) when I was a stupid teenager in the early 80's.

Thanks for the flashback. pirate:

Ok, I want to be on that Survivor. :cheer2:

Dom and I will most likely tivo ER, Las Vegas, Survivor, Lost, Extreme Home Makeover and the Donald version of The apprentice.

We also prepare the Turkey on the grill, but we don't use a rotisserie. Thank you Weber. We dry rub in everything but the kitchen sink. No such thing as too much spices in such a big bird.

We will miss ER, Boston Legal, Desperate Housewifes, Grey's Anatomy, anything on the Sci-fi channel.

Mostly, I will miss watching the game where may alma mater, Rutgers University, clinches its first bowl bid since.... Well, OK, they beat Princeton in the first football game ever played in 1869 and its been all downhill since until this year.

You're welcome! Ahhh, the early 80's. What great days....

It was the dawning of a new decade
We got our first microwave
Dad broke down and
Finally shaved them old sideburns off
I took the stickers off of my Rubik's Cube
Watched M-TV all afternoon
My first love was Daisy Duke
And them cut-off jeans.

Space Shuttle fell out of the sky
And the whole world cried...

It was nineteen eighty-somethin'
And the world that I grew up in
Skatin' rinks and black Trans-Ams
Big hair and parachute pants
And lookin' back now I can see me
Oh man, did I look cheesy
I wouldn't trade those days for nothin'
Oh it was nineteen eighty-somethin'.

Gotta love those 80's

i loved going to the movies in the 80's to catch the latest horror flick. one of my fondest memories is seeing the original "Friday the 13th" opening night-the night before i left to be a counselor at a summer sleepaway camp :earseek: one of the first things we were told upon arrival was "you are not to discuss that movie around the kids!!!!". i was the only one to have seen it, so of course it was a hot topic of conversation :)

i still have my parachute pants and my leather bomber jacket-ah, those were the days; you applied your make-up with a putty knife, an entire can of hairspray was required to fix your hair (in addition to the "moose" and styling gell), and a full semester at college cost less than $300 in tuition. the highlight of the week was the midnight showing of Rocky Horror...
