Every time we get off the ship there is buckets of food that people try to take off with them. I have wrapped things up and hidden them in the bottom of the big bag I use for Haley's diapers and other essentials and was fine. The worse they can do is make you put it in the buckets before you get off the ship!
the big issue is when you disembark (back on u.s. soil). they want to make sure that nothing (as in "little critters" in produce) gets onto u.s. soil. we realy experienced this when we went to hawaii 12 years ago. california had been getting warnings about the "med fly" and the consequences of it's presence-but we did not fully appreciate it until we observed it in hawaii. we would see these little gnat like bugs covering tables, swarming garbage cans (they even got into the soda lines at the bars-UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!). that's why no matter what island you fly out of in hawaii-you have to do a lay over in honolulu for bug spraying before you reenter the continental u.s.
b.t.w.-best ever hawaii souvinees - our dd

and 100% kona coffee (still have the name for the place we got the coffee because it's cheaper to order by mail than the lousy blends they sell here-our luggage still has a lingering coffee aroma from the 10 pounds we brought back

).
i've never tried to take any food off the boat in non u.s. ports-we usualy eat before we disembark. in fact-the only port i recall eating in was "cozumel"-we went to the hard rock cafe. i remember it well because my dd decided to stay in the kid's club so only ds came with us-it was soooooooooooo hot, dh and i decided to order mango daquires, we ordered one for each of us (myself, dh and ds-less than 3 at the time) and told the waiter one would be for ds. when we got them all 3 contained alcohol

. when we pointed this out to the waiter he shrugged and said "you need to let us know if you want a "virgin" for the kids". o.k.................................i know the drinking age is relaxed outside the u.s. but..................
the only other thing we had in port was the free cans of diet coke they hand out in the shops (well worth browsing for, in addition to getting the freebie stuff they give out with the coupons from the ship).
they may be getting tighter on taking food on and off the ships due to that virus (can't remember the name of) that has occured on many lines-when we did alaska last year we had hand sanitizing stations in all of the food areas as well as when you reembarked from each port.
o.k.-so i recognize (and confess i am also one of) the "choc-o-holics" in this group. but are there any non chocolate, sweet lovers in the group? i ask because the "jelly belly" factory is near by, and we get the benefit of "belly-flops"-all the non perfect jelly bellys that cannot be sold to the public because they are not "jelly belly perfect". yup, all the jelly belly goodness at next to nowhere near the price

if there are any of you that would enjoy some-let me know, i will grab some to share
chip&dale&fun-hubby have any secrets for cooking turkey? i stuff mine with cut up apples and oranges-gives a nice taste to the bird and ends up nice and moist. i still get crazy looks when i say that a turkey is one of the easiest weekend meals-hey, just put it in the oven, occasionaly baste it-much easier than many dinners i can think of (save delivery

).
