Just found out last night that our school district will no longer allow bake sales during school lunch hours. The reason they gave is due to their contract with Aramark Food Service. All vending machines and outside food (besides lunch brought from home) is banned.

This ban does not stop at bake sales - no more pizza reward parties and all vending machines must be turned off before school and during lunch. This includes machines which sell juice, not just soda and junk.

This ban has nothing to due with nutrition for the kids - its only purpose is to eliminate competition for the food service company.

The bake sales have been a very successful fundraiser for various school groups. since Armark took over, lunch prices have increased and quantity and quality have decreased.

Oh well, I guess I don't have to bake any more cream cheese brownies.

How much did they pay the school board for this privilage and where is that money going?

That's a crying shame that bake sales are gone. Someone negotiated away a good thing. Too bad about the pizza reward parties. I, for one, don't think this monopoly on the food is a good thing.

While our schools allow NO BAKE SALES or HOMEMADE TREATS AT ALL (except for the childs own personal lunch of course) because of Hepatitis and food-borne illnesses, I think I would put on my boxing gloves and try and throw the food service company out OR get someone FIRED for this decision.

Sorry I wouldn't take this lying down. When you interfere with a classroom pizza party you have crossed the line, imho.

No more BAKE SALE   Thats not fair
Aramark makes enuff money at sporting events

I picked up DS from school today and he said the students were sending around a petition to get the bake sales back. They had what they were told was "the last" bake sale yesterday. The students were very upset when told they wouldn't be allowed any longer.

I talked to a mom last night who said the school told her she couldn't bring cupcakes to lunch for her child's birthday.

That is sooooo ridiculous! Bad enough no more bake sales (same thing at our school), but no cupcakes for a birthday! It seems that the kids are not allowed to do anything. Our students are allowed to bring in cupcakes, but they are passed around in the class as an afternoon snack. We miss the bake sales and so do the kids! Where will it end?

I can't believe that they won't let them celbrate a birthday. Good for those kids for starting a petition. Sounds like they are a lot smarter than the ones running the school!
