New to US

I'm soooo excited!!! I just convinced DH and DSs to go to US this summer. We've been to WDW many times but have only been to US once (before kids) soon after they opened. I am looking to book onsite for trip July 13-18 and I have a few questions.

1-Which method is the best way to book? (most economical, least restrictive) Calling the hotel directly, booking online thru AAA, Universal or Lowes?
2-Do they all require a nights deposit or will they just hold a cc #
3-I am a Starwood Gold member. Will Lowes upgrade my membership? I have a blue Lowes membership.
4-Does RPR have rooms with a daybed or pull out couch? (DSs are 12 & 9, with the 12 yo 5'7". He needs his own bed)
5-Any other tips???

Just fielding 1, 2 and 5.

1 - I'd say book directly through the Universal site...for that length of time you can get two free tix for the parks. Another option is to buy on annual park pass, which will give you discounted rates at the on-site properties, reduced prices for the other park tix, and dining/shopping discounts at the parks. Do the math to figure out if it's worth it....(also, enter "APH" in the promotion code field on the Univeral booking page to see the discounted room rates).

2 - Booking through the Univeral site will result in a one night deposit charge on your card...this was not the case in the past, but I did get the charge on my most recently booked trip.

5 - Stay hydrated is tip #1 for any visit to UO in the summer!! You guys have plenty of time to explore the parks and the on-site hotels, so I'd say do some planning but set a relaxed pace and try to make everyone happy. Don't miss riding the Hulk and Jaws after dark. For good chow, check out The Kitchen at HRH and Mythos in IOA, if you're into food experiences.
