New "Mom's to Be" Thread!

Also, we go for our First Trimester Screening and NT (test for Down Syndrome via blood test and ultrasound) in 2 weeks. Our doctor said we should get it done but don't put a lot of faith/credit into the test if it comes back positive.

Anyone have advice or info on this?

I had this done, which was nice because you get an early and detailed ultrasound. Always fun!

We got a false positive on our AFP at 16W (it's a blood test--low levels may indicate Downs, high levels may indicate spinal issues or other structural problems, ours were high). Of course, they were high because there's two babies in there, but the midwife who called me failed to mention that was a possibility. Led to a fairly stressful weekend. When I went to see the genetic counselor, she was a little embarassed because they didn't consider my levels high at all for twins, and she felt bad the midwife freaked me out. But again, I got another fun ultrasound and we found out the genders a little early! (Well, one was wrong, but we don't need to talk about that :rotfl: )

yes, I'm definitely looking forward to another ultrasound picture!

I can't wait until we find out gender. I feel like I'm mostly prepared for a girl since we have lots of clothes, toys etc but if it's a boy, then I have absolutely no clothes. I want to hit the consignment sales in Sept/Oct, but don't think we find out that early.

Do you remember what week (20?) you can determine gender?

Thanks! That's what I thought it was...seems so far away...

Haha...thats what I thought too...but this pregnancy has really seemed to fly by. Can't believe that we are soo close. Just seems like yesterday that I found out I was pregnant.

We skipped the other tests and went right in for the high tech US followed by Amnio and I am so glad that we did. I feel better knowing the health of the baby is ok 100%; also we were able to find out at 16 weeks that we are having a girl.
W/ our first we had the triple screen and it showed a VERY high risk of Downs ... then the specialist could not get us in for several weeks. I cannot imagine going thru that stress again not knowing. W/ DD2 we put off the test until a detailed US could be scheduled the same day if necessary.
The amnio def. was the right choice for us this time around. Also, only one OB handles all the amnios and all the Ob's in the area send their patients to the hospital to see him, as he deals w/ all high risk pregnancies/amnios/etc. B/c he does them eveyday his is really good, and not just doing a couple a month so we felt pretty safe.

We have decided to skip this test. I am 28, though I have had 2 miscarriages so far. The specialist (perinatologist) suggested it obviously because that is his thing. My midwife offered it but didn't push too much. She just wanted to make sure I understood it. She said that because of my 2 miscarriages, I may want to be aware, since most MCs are bc of chromosomal abnormalities. I am 11.5 weeks now and feel that if it was bad that nature would have taken this one too... also, I just can't imagine terminating at this point (personal preference obviously) and don't know if i would want the extra worry for the next 6-7 months...

We are in the process of deciding whether or not to do the test. I could never terminate either (personal choice here also!), so I don't know if it's really worth the stress and worry for the next 6-7 months. On one hand, it may be good to know, so that we are able to prepare and research any problems....I go in on September 22, so we have a lot of time to decide.

The first trimester screen can only be done between 11-13 or so weeks. You may be out of luck to have it done.

I wanted to know so we could research and be prepared.

We've always chosen not to find out. I get stressed out very easily and it would just be months and months of panic attacks for me. I figure if something happens with our child, I'll just jump on the internet and research and head over here to talk to you all!:goodvibes

I'm a big worrywart, so I'm doing the same as you are. We'll be looking for clubfoot at the 20-week ultrasound, since DH was born with a bad case of clubfeet. But if that's the worst thing the baby will have, it's fine with us. DH walks, and orthopedic medicine certainly has come a long way since he was born.

Anything worse that comes along, well, we'll just deal with it as it happens.

We did the screen and to be honest, I wanted to know, not just for me, but for my other children. If something was potentially wrong with the baby, I would like to be prepared as possible. I would want the docs to know what to expect upon delivery and I would like to have lots of discussions with my sons.

Our doctor asked us what we would do if the outcome was positive for DS and we said -- research and prepare.

I, too, cannot terminate a pregnancy -- esp one where we went through IVF to get pregnant. But I do feel like I could research and prepare and take the time to adjust (mentally) to a special needs child now, instead of right after giving birth.

Anyway, just my thoughts. We probably won't do amnio (unless doc really pushes for it). I just hate the thought of the small percentage of babies that die pre-maturely from amnio. Would definitely agree with PP on going to someone who does these routinely, if we do it.

Going thru the pages and wanted to catch up things I missed...

OK, so since I haven't had an infant in a long time...I know nothing about what products are better than others. Where did you all find product information for items such as bottles, strollers, car seats, cribs, etc? Word of mouth, websites, etc?

TIA!
Besides asking around I check out the baby sites... babies r us has alot of opinions on products.. I dont always listen to all of them but they are a start of knowing things... There are so many baby products out there u can go nuts :rotfl: but it helps knowing if someone has the product and used it before. We just bought our double stroller and while I read bad reviews about it on Babies r us, I found out the model that they were showing on bru website was for the 2007 version not 2008 and the stroller is great. Ask away its so much fun to find out new things! :)

Hi ladies!

Just found this thread, hope you don't mind my joining in! I'm Gail, and I'm 18 weeks pregnant with our second baby (due 1/23 - hubby's birthday!) DD1 is 4, and so excited about her "baby sister." Unfortunately, we don't know that that is the case yet - I'm afraid of what will happen if it's a boy! So, we've decided to find out the sex at the ultrasound this time around, figuring it will give us a little more time to get her used to the idea of a brother if need be! As soon as I can get the prenatal testing center to call me back  I can schedule that, so we should know within the next couple of weeks.

H and I are less than a month away from a "just the two of us" trip to the World. :lovestruc We got a great deal at the Poly on a bounceback from last year, and we figure this will be our last chance to go by ourselves for a long, long time. Anyone who can offer tips on touring the world while PG, I would very much appreciate it - I think I'll be fine, but any BTDT advice is welcome!

Thanks for having me! :)

Welcome to the fun! :) A few months ago I did WDW pregnant and w/ a 15month old... :headache: (just kidding) My only touring advice is to take it slow, soak in the world around the rides and enjoy eating whatever you want. I found so many hidden mickeys and a new joy for air conditioning!!

Hi ladies! I hope you dont mind me joining in over here.. I am 8 weeks pregnant with TWINS. :scared1: Scary, huh!:lmao:
Welcome to the fun & congrats on your twins! :)

hey i thought you guys might find this funny!

Dear Non-Pregnant Person,

I hope you find these guidelines helpful in your interactions with pregnant women as failing to follow them may result in serious physical harm. ..

If you are thinking, surely she doesn’t mean me- then you should probably read this twice.

1) The appropriate response to a couple telling you they are having ababy is "Congratulations!" with enthusiasm.

Any other response makes you a jerk

2) Through the wonders of science, we now know that babies are made ONLY by the mother and father- not grandparents. Unless the baby is in your uterus or you are the man that helped put it there, you may not ever use the phrase "my baby".

3) On the same note, unless you made the baby as defined in 2, the pregnancy, birth and raising of the child are not about you.You do not have input. No one wants to hear your opinion unless they ask for it. The same goes for the name of the baby.

4) The body of a pregnant women should be treated the same as any other body. You would not randomly touch someone’s stomach if they were not pregnant, nor would you inquire into the condition of their uterus, cervix or how they plan to use their breasts.Pregnancy does not remove all traces of privacy from a woman.

5) Likewise, no women wants to hear comments on her weight- ever.A pregnant woman does not find it flattering that you think she is about is pop, must be having twins, looks swollen or has gained weight in her face.Telling her she looks too small only makes her worry that she is somehow starving her baby. Making such comments invite her to critique your physical appearance and you may not act offended. The only acceptable comment on appearance is "You look fabulous!".

6) By the time we are 20-30 years old, most of us have picked up on thefact that the summer is hot. We are hot every summer when we are not pregnant. We don’t need you to point out that we will be miserably hot before the baby comes.

7) There is a reason that tickets to L&D are not yet sold on Ticketmaster. Childbirth is actually not a public event. It may soundcrazy, but some women really do not relish the idea of their mother, MIL or a host of other family members seeing their bare butt and genitals. Also, some people simply feel like the birth of their child is a private and emotional moment to be shared only by the parents.Like everything else in life, unless you receive an invitation, you are NOT invited. This includes doctor appointments, ultrasounds, labor, delivery, the hospital and the parents home. You do not decide if you will be there for the birth or if you will move in with the new parents to "help out".If your assistance is desired, rest assured that you willbe asked for it.

9) If you are asked to help after the birth, this means you should cleanup the house, help with cooking meals, and generally stay out of the way.Holding the baby more than the parents, interfering withbreastfeeding and sleeping schedules and making a woman who is still leaking fluid from multiple locations lift a finger in housework is not helping.

10) The only people entitled to time with the baby are the parents.Whether they choose to have you at the hospital for the birth or ask for you to wait three weeks to visit, appreciate that you are are being given the privilege of seeing their child.Complaining or showing disappointment only encourages the parents to include you less.I hope this helps- it sure makes us feel better.
