Sorry to do this here, but just had to vent. I was at Burger King this afternoon and couldn't get a park in the disabled car parking space (I have a permit), so we parked further away and i walked slowly inside, as my Chronic fatigue is bad at the moment. As we went past the park i noticed that the driver was in the car, with no permit. I banged on his car and asked him where his permit was, as this was a disabled parking spot. He said "it doesn't matter, i'm just waiting for someone". i raised my voice at this point and said.... "there are some of us that actually need the park a**hole... " he actually had the nerve to say "i'm only going to be here a minute". I said "its the law you can't park here". and he said, "well unless some one from burger king comees out and tells me to move i'm not moving"..... BTW he was still there when i got out of BK to go back to my car. I was so angry by this pioint that when i went past him called him a cretin loud enough for anyone in the area to hear.

Sorry but I just had to vent... Those parks are there for us, not for them because it is more convient.

I don't blame you for being angry. Some people have no common courtesy.

Totally understand this....my DB did a good one to someone..

DB was returning a move to BlockBuster....parked where he is entitled to park...returned his movie and was going back to the car. Some stupid lady in another vehicle made the smart remark about him parking in the handicapped space...he politely told them that he would trade his handicapped parking permit for their left leg...gee...the lady left....bet she doesn't make a smart comment again (DB permit was visible to anyone who bothered to look)

I have made up 3 x 5 cards....they say....I hope someday you deserve this space...for my really snarky feeling days.

Vent away! Think I would have done more than that!

I get so upset that people give me looks and make rude comments to me about parking in handicap parking. You see I look young I am 30 but look about 24 or 25) and healthy but I have a invisable disease (Fibromylagia and CFIDS and many others.) I don't look like I need it but on some says I really do and i only use it when I am in a flare up I never abuse it. It is getting to the point I don't want to park there anymore because of the looks I get.
For the OP I would call the COPS next time so that they can ticket the car that is illegally parking in the spot. That makes me sick!

I have had this happen many times and in those situations when the driver is in the car and they wouldn't move when I had a side lift I just parked my van in the isle right behind them so they couldn't pull out and made them wait until I was done shopping. I made my kids roll around the other side of the van so they can see them and then we would go shop usually at the grocery store but one time it was at the doctors office and it was very crowded at the Ped's office so the wait was close to 2 hours. I often wonder if that idiot has ever parked in the spaces again.

::yes::
People without handicapped parking permits for a few minutes is a sore spot to me (literally).
When DD was much younger and went to daycare, people continually parked in the handicapped spot because they were "just running in". On nice days, I would park farther away where I had room to get DD's wheelchair out of the van and put her in it without having to carry her far (in our days before a ramp van) and then complain when I got into the day care. They would post a notice and things would be better for a few days (although the staff told me they would get lots of complaints from people without permits saying they didn't see why they could not park there since they were only running in.
One snowy, icy day, someone was parked in the spot and instead of waiting, I "saved time" by parking farther away and carrying DD. Unfortunately, the farther away spot was MUCH icier and I fell back against the van. Luckily, DD was not hurt, but in my attempt to protect her, both of my front teeth hit the van and broke off.
So, someone else's lack of courtesy cost me not only the 2 hours I was at the dentist that morning for an emergency visit, but also my front teeth. The daycare got the police to patrol for a few days and ticket anyone who parked there illegally. A few people even had the gall to complain to the daycare director about that, but I never found anyone parking there again without a permit.

A punishment to fit the crime.
And the great thing is that they can't call the police or they will get a ticket for parking where they are stuck.

I know what you mean. I have Chairi (it's like Fibro, Chronic fatigue + other stuff mixed together with constant headaches and dizziness) and look 10 or more years younger than I am. I constantly get dirty looks, especially from the elderly!
I hesitated getting a permit because of my age, but realized I was avoiding leaving the house without the permit. So I finally decided I needed one because I still had kids at home, and I need to use my energy to raise them, not use it for walking long distances in parking lots!!!
I second calling the cops on the guy!

I have the phone numbers for the Orlando Police and the Orange, Osceola and Polk County Sheriff's Departments non-emergency numbers programmed into my cell phone. I will call in and report any violation. I find that most of the officers are very happy to write a $250 ticket for this.

I have a good friend that has Chairi and it is Hello on earth!!!!! Can you have the operation? What a awful thing to have to have headaches and dizziness all the time!
I really hate parking in the HC parking but there are some days that I would not be able to go out if I did not use it. I hate the looks it makes me feel bad!
(((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))) and I hope you have a good pain control I feel so bad for you!

Oh Sue I so feel for you what a horrible thing to happen!!!!!
Thanks. It was a pretty nasty start to the day. Luckily, I had a cell phone and the dentist's number with me and they could see me right away.
I was very happy that DD wasn't hurt. It could have been much worse, but she fell back into the seat of the van (not quite in the right spot, but not hurt anyway.)
The ironic thing was that before the accident, I had a gap between my front teeth that the dentist had been saying for years would look better if it was closed. Having the gap there gave him a little more space to do the repair. One tooth was broken off enough that it needed a cap and the other one just got a veneer.

in the uk it's not illegal to park in a disabled bay so you can imagine how bad it is over here

and it is. I don't understand why here in the UK they can't make it illegal to park in the disabled bays without a badge. but then being the first time in the USA since my sons accident I was embarrased at how behind the USA the UK is in more ways than one about disabilities.

My sister-in-law bitterly complained about her parking ticket. It turns out she parked in a disabled spot "just for a minute". Well, I'm glad to say, she got a ticket. That taught her a lesson!

that would be the best thing they could do but it will never happen, as for the usa we would move there if it was possible, still a yearly trip to WDW keeps her going

Not quite true.

If you don't have a handicap permit (and you are not loading or unloading a commercial vehicle) you can get a parking ticket in a disabled bay on the public highway during the time parking restrictions normally apply. You would get a ticket for parking in the one in the street outside my house if you parked there between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday or Saturday mornings, but not at other times. (but I don't tell my neighbours that).

On private land, like at a supermarket, it might not be illegal, but you could still be legally clamped and have to pay to have the clamp removed provided 'conditions of use of the parking area' are clearly posted.

I would also add that even drivers with handicap permits can park badly. I have twice been prevented from getting into my van by drivers with valid handicap permits parking partly in my space so that I couldn't lower my ramp.

i was aware of this but when did you last see someone get a ticket and as for supermarkets we have compained to both our local ones and nothing has been done even though they do have the correct signs , don't really know what the answer is, sorry people dont have the courtesy to leave you enough room I do know how you feel

I don't blame you for being mad. I would have gone right in and asked to talk to the manager. Then told him what he said.

The only times I've used a handicapped spot without the permit, I think I truly deserved to do so.

Once, I was two weeks past due, and had to go to the bank to make a deposit. The night before we had gotten an ice storm, and there was a sheet of ice an inch or two thick across the entire parking lot--except for from the handicapped space to the bank door. The next closest spot was probably 15 cars down. Had it not been for the pregnancy, I would have just slid along. But being two weeks past due, I was having enough problems walking, let alone doing so on ice. So I parked there. I admit it. And I would have fought that ticket had I gotten one.

Another time was three days after I broke my foot. I was on crutches, and the mall was packed--the only parking was in the outer lot, and I just needed to run in to get my paycheck. OK, I wasn't exactly running. Hobble maybe. So again, I used the handicapped space, and again, I would have fought that ticket. BTW--I used the space that didn't have the special wheelchair access lane...
