*~* Muggles, Welcome to the Burrow! *~*

My DH and I used to argue, he thought bad and I thought good, but after reading the Mugglenet posts, we are both moving to the middle. I got thru the first part of the book quickly, but he took it with him and (OF COURSE) left it at his office. So, he is going to pick it up tomorro, so I can finish.

thanks, again, for sharing the wealth (of knowledge).

Sharon

the book is definatly interesting. espically when they get to the "Who will die in book 7?" part.

glad i could help a fellow fan out! you should check out their website, too. lots of interesting stuff.

I'm glad that he did well in his play, but the more I think about it...I think that it's really not good that he did the play. It's fun, and funny and interesting, but kind of selfish. I know Warner Bros. will take some crap from it, for one thing, and they are the ones who've really boosted his fame w/ 7 multimillion dollar movies.

Plus, he's not even 18 yet. I know things are different in Europe..but the fact that his parents are behind him and wanting him to do this ... sort of creeps me out. he could do a lot of serious things, that are not ... well ... NOT naked. Also, this role does not guarantee that he will not be type cast or thrown aside as soon as he grows up...so..yeah...why jeopardize the hP series?

I know that it gives the fangirls a lot of pleasure, but I've never understood why child stars (a lot of Disney stars too) are willing to throw back in the face of who made them famous, and bare all. It makes no sense. I don't really like the idea of DanRad being...kinda...slutty. ha ha. If he does get kicked out of the future HP movies (unlikely) I will be annoyed with him.

Good v. Evil

I have been thinking about something Good v. Evil and Beauty v. Plain/Ugly. There seems to be a correlation in the book with Good being beautiful and Plain/Ugly being associated with Good.

For instance the real baddies in the book: Lucius, Bellatrix, Tom Riddle are all good looking, and the good guys such as Harry, Ron, and Hermione are all normal, or even kind of unattractive.

I think that going by this idea that Draco will not be redeemed in the last book, but will decide to take up on the side of Voldemort, but Snape will be redeemed and ultimately do something for the greater good. Thus ends my crack theory of the day...:)

The play isn't supposed to be fun or funny - the nudity isn't gratuitous or slutty at all - he's not naked for giggles, it's a really integral part of the play. Equus is a hearbreaking, shocking, disturbing piece of literature that, like all good works of art, makes you ask questions, makes you think.

Is he selfish for putting his career ahead of Warner Bros promotional department? Yes, but that's a good kind of selfishness. He wants to be a serious actor, not a washed up child star, or a one-hit wonder. Where is Mark Hamill today? Making appearances at Star Wars conventions.

The Harry Potter movies will be a small part of Dan's life, when all is said and done. He may not get his choice of roles five years from now or ten years from now, or whenever the fans decide they are ready to see him in something besides Harry Potter.

We Americans have such a prudish nature regarding nudity. Prime time television shows can show scenes of incredible violence and gore - and no one blinks an eye. But nudity is cause for horror. It's messed up, if you ask me!

I don't know anything about Dan's parents, but they know their son better than any fan or film producer, so if they are confident in their decision, I guess I don't see where it is my place to question it.

Well said! And the bolded part is the part I really agree with. I couldn't be more proud of Dan for wanting to step out of the Harry Potter shadow and take on more serious roles. He has a really good head on his shoulders and I think he knows what he's doing. I expect to see really great things from him in the future :thumbsup2

I meant that it was fun or funny to us...I really don't know much about the play.

And I knew my response wouldn't be popular, but I stand by it. I think it was selfish. He can step outside of his potter role when he's done with it. Maybe he should be selfish, I don't know, but it's still selfish. And yeah, maybe he should be selfish, because I know if WB thinks that he's jeopardizing the series they will drop him...I guess everyone's out for themselves.

To me it just seems like one more child star out to shock us as they 'grow up'. Nothing really groundbreaking...just more of the same...I dunno.

I don't dislike Dan for it...just...I don't know...it's sort of :confused3

who said it was funny on this thread?? none of us said anything about it being funny.

it's one of the most popular plays in history, actually. i'm surprised you've never heard of it before now. they read it in schools a lot.

i still don't get this "selfish" thing. he can't do other movies now, because he's still doing the Potter movies?? that's just stupid. the WB isn't going to let him go. there's no way. do you KNOW how much money they would lose if they did that?? that would be susicide if they did that.

Warner Brothers supports Dan:

LONDON, February 18 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to pieces that have run in various UK media - A spokesperson from Warner Bros. Pictures has issued the following:

"Daniel Radcliffe is an extremely talented actor, as well as a great collaborator and friend to Warner Bros. Pictures. We've had great experiences working with him on our films and fully support him in the artistic choices he makes as an actor."

I'm sorry you are getting upset by how I feel, but I can't make you 'get' what I'm saying as I've already explained myself. I've stated my point, and you've stated yours, we can move on now.

And a lot of people think the whole thing is pretty funny (got a lot of giggles over it) .. maybe not the play but the whole fact that he's in it.

I also don't think WB would get rid of DanRad as I said before. Only if he was a liability. Do I think it would be suicide if they did? I'm not sure...I think people are always annoyed with character changes, but it's not like its not come up with other HP characters before, including Dan, that they might have to be replaced. But I've already stated before that I don't think they'd replace him.

Sheesh, I knew no one would be on my side, I didn't know everyone would get so mad  I'm not really trying to start a fight :wizard:

Cobrabubbles, I swear I'm not trying to pick on you! It's perfectly understandable to find the play unsettling. And there were lots of giggles at first, because people weren't used to seeing the actor that way.

But I really don't think Dan is doing this to shock people. This role is like Hamlet for teenage boys - it's the role that lets you showcase your abilities as an actor. When the play was originally staged in the 70's, the star was a teenager as well. And the author of the play, Peter Shaffer, is apparently so protective of his work that he hasn't permitted a major stage revival in decades. The director of this new production has spent two years getting it ready for the stage...and Dan has been preparing for the role for over a year himself. Dan's co-star, Richard Griffiths, is a major star of the British stage and has won all sorts of acclaim and awards. I guess I'm just trying to say that everyone involved in the production is taking this very seriously, and I don't think that all these people, whose careers revolve around live theater, would participate in something that was just for the shock value of showing Harry Potter naked.

I won't pretend that I particularly understand the play - it isn't the sort of thing I would go see myself, even. But I appreciate that it's piece of art, and like all art, some people love it, hate it, or don't care either way.

Yesterday I went to see "Bridge to Terabithia". The theater owner spoke to us before the movie about upcoming attractions. He told us that they will be airing 2 Harry Potter movies this year. Of course we all know about OotP being released in July. He said the second movie will be aired in December. Has anybody heard this? When I checked wikipedia, it says HBP will be released in Nov 08.

Dan is Dan and Harry is Harry. But on the second part of the same post -

DanRad

For instance the real baddies in the book: Lucius, Bellatrix, Tom Riddle are all good looking, and the good guys such as Harry, Ron, and Hermione are all normal, or even kind of unattractive.

I think that going by this idea that Draco will not be redeemed in the last book, but will decide to take up on the side of Voldemort, but Snape will be redeemed and ultimately do something for the greater good. Thus ends my crack theory of the day...:)

I don't think it's a crack theory at all, but rather observant. It seems to appear with a lot of the characters - the first exception that comes to mind being Lily. I think maybe Jo IS making a point that beauty does not equal goodness (so she wouldn't go totally the other way either.)

Though I still hold out hope that Draco is young enough to change, if only because Dumbledore did...

What do some others think?

Well, I think yes and no. The Slytherins are described in some pretty negative terms. Pansy Parkinson has a nose like a pig, for example. Millicent Bulstrode is supposed to be a large, masculine looking girl, and Theodore Nott is "stringy". Crabbe and Goyle are "hulking". The Malfoys seem to be the only Slytherin who are good looking. Snape of course, has the sallow skin and hook nose and greasy hair. Slughorn reminds Harry of a walrus.

The Trio are all average looking, although we know Hermione can be quite pretty when she makes the effort. Among other "good" characters, the Patil twins are the best looking girls in the school, according to Seamus. Cho Chang is "very pretty" She's on the good side, but she is oversensitive and a bit silly. Sirius was handsome, before he went to Azkaban. He's a good guy, but also rash and dangerous. As mentioned above, Lily - and probably Ginny is quite pretty. We don't hear much about her beauty because Harry is apparently more attracted to her personality (and good for him!) but Pansy Parkinson tells us that most of the boys at school find her quite good looking.

Bill Weasely was a "handsome boy" before his werewolf attack, and of course there is Fleur, whose beauty is beyond human. She is an annoying character in many ways, but her love for Bill certainly seems sincere.

But then we have characters like the vain and pompous Gilderoy Lockheart, whose handsomeness hides a cruel and deceptive heart.

The nice thing about JKR's characters is that they are so layered. The good characters have flaws, the bad ones have virtues, and everyone is more than their appearance.

:goodvibes
I really do hope so, the whole thing just screamed sensationalism to me, but I hope it's a lot more serious, and will help him, because nothing is a guarantee.

Anyway..

Yeah, they aren't all good or bad based on appearances, I just noticed that the main characters who've been central were not necessarily attractive.. Even Hermione was homely at first. Just an observation, anyway. I'm almost done with Sorcerer's Stone, on the way back to book 6 (in time for book 7 hopefully!)

Though I still hold out hope that Draco is young enough to change, if only because Dumbledore did...

What do some others think?

I hope the Draco does change, despite the fact that I do not think he will. He acts they way he acts despite having a mother who loves him. Something that neither Harry nor Voldemort had (well Harry had a mother who loved him, but did not grow up with her). Despite this, he seems to just be a rather rotten child. But the bathroom scene shows that perhaps he will be redeemed...I guess we will see
