My DH and I used to argue, he thought bad and I thought good, but after reading the Mugglenet posts, we are both moving to the middle. I got thru the first part of the book quickly, but he took it with him and (OF COURSE) left it at his office. So, he is going to pick it up tomorro, so I can finish.
thanks, again, for sharing the wealth (of knowledge).

I'm glad that he did well in his play, but the more I think about it...I think that it's really not good that he did the play. It's fun, and funny and interesting, but kind of selfish. I know Warner Bros. will take some crap from it, for one thing, and they are the ones who've really boosted his fame w/ 7 multimillion dollar movies.
Plus, he's not even 18 yet. I know things are different in Europe..but the fact that his parents are behind him and wanting him to do this ... sort of creeps me out. he could do a lot of serious things, that are not ... well ... NOT naked. Also, this role does not guarantee that he will not be type cast or thrown aside as soon as he grows up...so..yeah...why jeopardize the hP series?
I know that it gives the fangirls a lot of pleasure, but I've never understood why child stars (a lot of Disney stars too) are willing to throw back in the face of who made them famous, and bare all. It makes no sense. I don't really like the idea of DanRad being...kinda...slutty. ha ha. If he does get kicked out of the future HP movies (unlikely) I will be annoyed with him.
The play isn't supposed to be fun or funny - the nudity isn't gratuitous or slutty at all - he's not naked for giggles, it's a really integral part of the play. Equus is a hearbreaking, shocking, disturbing piece of literature that, like all good works of art, makes you ask questions, makes you think.
Is he selfish for putting his career ahead of Warner Bros promotional department? Yes, but that's a good kind of selfishness. He wants to be a serious actor, not a washed up child star, or a one-hit wonder. Where is Mark Hamill today? Making appearances at Star Wars conventions.
The Harry Potter movies will be a small part of Dan's life, when all is said and done. He may not get his choice of roles five years from now or ten years from now, or whenever the fans decide they are ready to see him in something besides Harry Potter.
We Americans have such a prudish nature regarding nudity. Prime time television shows can show scenes of incredible violence and gore - and no one blinks an eye. But nudity is cause for horror. It's messed up, if you ask me!
I don't know anything about Dan's parents, but they know their son better than any fan or film producer, so if they are confident in their decision, I guess I don't see where it is my place to question it.
Bravo! Terrific post!!!!

I meant that it was fun or funny to us...I really don't know much about the play.
And I knew my response wouldn't be popular, but I stand by it. I think it was selfish. He can step outside of his potter role when he's done with it. Maybe he should be selfish, I don't know, but it's still selfish. And yeah, maybe he should be selfish, because I know if WB thinks that he's jeopardizing the series they will drop him...I guess everyone's out for themselves.
To me it just seems like one more child star out to shock us as they 'grow up'. Nothing really groundbreaking...just more of the same...I dunno.
I don't dislike Dan for it...just...I don't know...it's sort of![]()
Warner Brothers supports Dan:
LONDON, February 18 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to pieces that have run in various UK media - A spokesperson from Warner Bros. Pictures has issued the following:
"Daniel Radcliffe is an extremely talented actor, as well as a great collaborator and friend to Warner Bros. Pictures. We've had great experiences working with him on our films and fully support him in the artistic choices he makes as an actor."
Here is the link to the press release.
who said it was funny on this thread?? none of us said anything about it being funny.
it's one of the most popular plays in history, actually. i'm surprised you've never heard of it before now. they read it in schools a lot.
i still don't get this "selfish" thing. he can't do other movies now, because he's still doing the Potter movies?? that's just stupid. the WB isn't going to let him go. there's no way. do you KNOW how much money they would lose if they did that?? that would be susicide if they did that.

For instance the real baddies in the book: Lucius, Bellatrix, Tom Riddle are all good looking, and the good guys such as Harry, Ron, and Hermione are all normal, or even kind of unattractive.
I think that going by this idea that Draco will not be redeemed in the last book, but will decide to take up on the side of Voldemort, but Snape will be redeemed and ultimately do something for the greater good. Thus ends my crack theory of the day...![]()

I don't think it's a crack theory at all, but rather observant. It seems to appear with a lot of the characters - the first exception that comes to mind being Lily. I think maybe Jo IS making a point that beauty does not equal goodness (so she wouldn't go totally the other way either.)
The nice thing about JKR's characters is that they are so layered. The good characters have flaws, the bad ones have virtues, and everyone is more than their appearance.
But I really don't think Dan is doing this to shock people. This role is like Hamlet for teenage boys - it's the role that lets you showcase your abilities as an actor.
Though I still hold out hope that Draco is young enough to change, if only because Dumbledore did...
What do some others think?
