Thanks! I've got my fingers and toes crossed! Luckily, DH's company runs a small employee pharmacy and I can buy most of our OTC things there VERY cheaply. Of course, there was not a single pill of Benedryl on the shelves, name brand or generic!

I am hoping that the class gets cancelled again (I was supposed to take it this spring but it was called off due to low enrollment)...if that happens I can make a strong case for getting them to let me take it as an independent study in the fall when my tuition is cheaper, and I will be taking out loans this year.

5/12: Definitely NOT a No-Buy day as I went into the city with a friend to see a movie - so tolls, parking, snacks, and then lunch at McDonald's with DD...but I took all of this $ out of a separate account so I am not adding it up. Ridiculous amount of library fines I was ashamed about and will NOT mention the amount! $6.53 groceries/$167.56 left for the month; $10 gas (just to get us through till tomorrow when DH gets paid); $14.99 sports equipment for DS.

5/13: $109 for tuneup and oil change (naturally it needed a bit more work than that); $5 DS school lunch; $4 snacks at baseball game; $7.99 swim shoes for DD (after a $5 coupon, yeah! ); 2 weeks at DD's daycare ($148); $72 for pet medicine (Frontline for both dogs - DH remembered to use a coupon, YEAH!); $25 on Amazon for a new plug for my laptop (DD broke the other one - this is my NEW laptop...)...$24 for training pants; $24.86 groceries/$142.70 left for the month. Also paid our mortgage, cell phone and DH's student loan...so already half the paycheck DH got today is gone plus our car loan payment will come out Monday.

One thing I did today which I feel great about is that I noticed the bank where I have an account to use for mortgage payments, was offering a 6-year CD at 3%. I realize that's not great but these days, it's something. I rolled most of the kids' savings accounts at this bank into a CD in my name which they will be beneficiaries of if anything should happen to me before it matures. Anything helps, right?

5/14: $10 gas, $10.48 groceries/$132.22 left for month; $8.06 at Six Flags (DS and DD wanted capes)...this was the ONLY thing we bought there! If we can get off that easy other times I'll be delighted. $22.01 on beer and wine when we got home (no, not because it was a rough day, LOL!) I think DH spent about $4 on coffee for the drive home too.

I feel really good that we spent so little at the theme park today.

I see your breach is: "Officials are keeping the flow of the deliberate breach to a rate of 500 cubic feet per second". They had to open ours because the river was flowing at 1.5 million cubic feet per second. It's insane. They said it could get up 2.1 million feet per second. Our Bonnet Carre Spillway (the first one they opened) can divert 250,000 cubic feet per second and Morganza can divert 600,000 cubic feet per second. They are not planning to open Morganza all the way. I think to about 150,000 CFS.

I make the comparison because when they talk about all this millions of cubic feet of pressure, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Then you see the devastation from "just" 500 CFS and it's like OMG. They said they could fill the Superdome in 30 seconds at the rate it's flowing....and they said that a few days ago, when the pressure was lower. I think it was 1.2 million CFS when they said that. In comparison, yours can "enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool every three minutes."

The sheer amount of water is just incredible and it's all flowing past my house less than a block away.

I'm not doing so well with this month's no buy. It seems like every day this month someone in our household spent money on something, even if it was something small.

Today I went to Wal Mart. I cannot stand our local Wal Mart. It's not very clean. There are no self check outs, so the lines are horribly long, etc. Still, I was right by there and decided to stop in. Ugh. Big mistake.

5 registers out of like 30 registers were open. Lines had at least 6 filled grocery carts per aisle. Ridiculous. I bought nothing. There were a lot of full carts with no owners left near the checkouts. I just don't get it. Why have 3 people stocking shelves in the vitamin section? They should have put 2 of those 3 people on register, but I don't run the store. I guess it's more important to straighten the vitamin aisle instead of selling merchandise to customers. I feel sorry for people with frozen and refrigerated items in that heat who were brave enough to just stand there patiently waiting their turn.

I went to another regular grocery store, paid the same as what I would have at Wal Mart, and got in and out really fast. I learned my lesson again about not shopping at Wal Mart.

Oh, and I bought Wii Fit Plus on Amazon today. See, I'm not saving too well this month.

Things go like that sometimes! Your Walmarts sound just like ours. There are 3 within 40 minutes of my house, and they're all dirty. The two Super Walmarts have really long lines, but the regular one isn't so bad. Enjoy the Wii Fit Plus! I've had a lot of fun with it!

Wow! I am surprised I got even that much comprehension! I read the word samedi and so I figured it happened yesterday. The Krewe of Endymion rolls on Samedi Gras....that's how I know Saturday.

The opening of the Morganza Spillway is expected to flood up to 3,000 square miles. They delayed the opening and also are opening it gradually for the same reason - giving people and wildlife time to move out of the way.

I am protected by a levee. Opening the Morganza is supposed to relieve (to some extent) the huge strain on the levees through Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and next to a nuclear power plant and several oil refineries. That is why they chose to open it despite flooding farms and homes. They feared that keeping it closed would cause the pressure to break levees anywhere along that stretch, causing more even damage than what will be caused by opening it. They are using the flood control system as it was designed.

I'm going to try a limit of $40 for each 3 day period. $400/30 days is the same amount as $40/3 days over the month, but mentally it's a very different approach. I only have $40 to spend, but I only have to make it last 3 days! I have no idea if this will work or not, but it's worth a try.

I *thought* I fixed my car Friday, but there was still a lot of smoke coming out from under the hood when I drove around today (didn't go out yesterday). Hoping really really hard that it's just leftover oil that wasn't cleaned properly and not that the oil leak is not fixed. I refuse to go back to that crappy garage though as I'm sure whatever they do will be expensive and will just pretend it's a new issue. So I'll be trying out a new garage recommended to me by some colleagues.

Since today was a bad day (my car not being fixed, and seeing my mom in the hospital still very very weak), I loaded up on comfort food : cookie dough ice cream, cheesecake, doughnuts, and cheese fondue for dinner. Yum!

Ronmel, just wanted to say what a LOVELY picture that is! All of you dealing with the flooding (or potential flooding) are in my thoughts..yikes!

I will get exact #'s and post tomorrow but I spent $2 on Dunkin' Donuts, $30 on books at an author's speech at my synagogue, $10 on groceries and $42 on gas (filled up DH's car, still need to do mine)...also DH and DS got some things we needed at the pet store so I have to look at that receipt.

Tomorrow will NOT be no-buy because I am filling up my gas tank, have to mail out a few things and I am getting a new tricycle for DD (a Radio Flyer push-handle one!) for $35 off Craig's List. So, good deal!

I'm frustrated that I haven't been able to watch the movie or finish the book I need to get through for my class which starts a week from tomorrow...but on the other hand, I did get a lot of paper thrown out/recycled today and that feels good!
